Otoh, the lack of spacing in previous eras usually kept all 5 defenders on the strongside (as seen in GIF above), since there were no weakside floor-spreaders to draw them away.

That's why (spacing ) players like LeBron are headaches for the defense...

Exactly.. The spacing is why Lebron is a headache.. Without spacing, he'd face more defenders on the strongside.. He'd also have less room and time to operate because help defenders would be closer.

Exactly, that's what spacing does - it makes it too obvious if you try to load up on one player, and too easy to find the open man.. said another way - the Jordan Rules would never work in today's game - the spacing makes double-teaming too obvious and results in easy, obvious passes like the one Lebron (and my grandmother) can easily make to #20 Mosgov above.. That's how easy spacing makes passing.

Mid 00s Pistons and Pacers, Late 80s Pistons, Duncan's Spurs (when they want too), and some other teams.. too lazy to think of all of them.

Spurs wouldn't win a ring in the 80's.. Think about it - Duncan/Ginobili/Parker is nowhere near Bird/McHale/Parish/DJ.. Magic/Kareem/Worthy/Scott/Green/Cooper.. Isiah/Dumars/Laimbeer/Rodman/Dantley.. Moses Malone/Dr. J/Toney/Cheeks/Jones.. MJ/Scottie

So, yeah.. playing guys like LeBron, Kobe, Durant, etc. one on one is not wise, especially on a stage like the finals.

Even though the spacing allows today's player easier drives and weak paint resistance (which leads to easier domination), the Warriors still can't help too early on Lebron - the spacing simply leaves players TOO OPEN and the passes are too obvious and easy to make, like the previous Mosgov example..

The spacing enhances the effect of good ball movement - the supporting cast simply gets looks that are way too good if you move the ball, just like the entire Cavs supporting cast did in the Atlanta series.. So you don't want Lebron moving the ball - stay at home, and let him hold or dribble the ball as long as possible.

And I guess it's not rocket science.. Letting someone take a shot they only convert 32.5% of the time is better than ANY OTHER OPTION DEFENSIVELY (indeed, Lebron shot a horrific 32.5% on isolations in 2015 playoffs).

The only interesting question is whether an opponent benefits more from letting Lebron isolate at 32.5% a pop, or letting Deandre Jordan shoot FT's at 50%.. What's helps a team more: letting Lebron isolate or hack-a-Jordan?
