Re: The Truth about Duncan, Malone and Barkley. No Agenda.
Check Malone's postseason stats lol. .140 WS/48 and a .526 TS%. Compared to .196 WS/48 and 55% TS for Duncan. And 5.9 BPM vs 3.6 for Malone.
Duncan certainly didn't underperform in '03 when he demolished the Lakers and the Mavs singlehandedly. Who did he have then? Manu was a role player in '03, D-Rob averaged 8-7 and then 7-6 in the playoffs. I think Manu and TP shot a combined 38% in that postseason. Yet they beat the 3 time defending champs and the offensive juggernaut Mavs. His two finals series against the Knicks and the Nets were legendary, despite the fact that neither team was particularly formidable. It is still the finals and it's enormously impressive that a guy in his sophomore year in the NBA could win a finals MVP. Much less average 28/14/3/2/1 54/79 en route. That's right. That was his line. The series before that? Averaged 29/11/3/2 51/80, swept the Lakers. This was the year Malone won his second MVP. His team fizzled in the postseason.
As for '03, well, how can you hate on 24/18/5/5? Or 28/17/6/3/1 on 57% against the Mavs? Or 28/12/5 53% against the Lakers? Still not done. Won the '05 finals MVP despite a bad offensive showing against one of the GOAT defenders. He still held it down on the defensive end. Fast forward 8 years. Was 6 seconds away from winning FMVP at 37. A year later, puts up 15/10 on 57% shooting to go along with his customarily great rim protection and defensive anchoring.
Duncan is indisputably an infinitely better defender than either man were. 3 ATG's, don't misunderstand me....but TD has by far the best postseason resume.

In before shaww talks about the legendary 90s and Malone's's inability to beat Hakeem+role players...or losing to a 40 win Warriors team...or shooting .485 TS% against the 5th ranked defense, while he could cost on defense himself (unless Rodman/Luc Longley were hard guards).
Malone is clearly on a tier below Duncan/Garnett/Dirk/Barkley...he played with the 2nd best pure PG in league history and he still couldn't get it done. Not with Jordan in the league or with him out of it (wins MVP and fizzles out, like you said).
How many teams win titles with their star shooting as poorly as Malone did on a regular basis? The Spurs certainly couldn't (only time they did was in 05 but they had peak Manu, plus they won with their defense which Duncan is GOAT-tier at, unlike a Malone or Barkley).

Re: The Truth about Duncan, Malone and Barkley. No Agenda.
I view them like this:
Duncan: Clearly the GOAT PF. Brought a great center's skillset to the PF position. But at the same time could play away from the basket, pass, and handle the rock like the new age PF's. Sick COMBO of skills!
Malone: The greatest "prototype" PF of all time. Took what guys like Hayes and Pettit represented before him and put it in a 6'9 265 pound package. While u could argue Timmy was really a center and Barkley a hybrid PF-SF, Malone was a STRAIGHT UP PF!
Barkley: The most offensively talented PF of all time! Was a freakish athlete, had point forward skills, and a great scoring skillset. Plus he still had all the normal great toughness and rebounding of a PF. Peak wise, I think he's the best PF of all time.

You might want to learn how to spell "career" too.
As far as Duncan is concerned, I'm amazed at his desire to win night after night, year after year. After watching the rest of the Spurs play such disinterested basketball this year, I now see how RARE it is to keep up that intensity for so many years.

Consensus Top 20-30 AT
Re: The Truth about Duncan, Malone and Barkley. No Agenda.
Malone would have a strong case for being top 10 all-time--if the playoffs did not exist. Malone and his contemporary D. Robinson, while both excellent players, simply were not able to keep up their standard of play in the playoffs. Duncan is a player who could. Duncan also was a far greater defensive force than Malone and especially Barkley. The problem with Barkley, who while superior to Malone prime versus prime, is he started breaking down by age 30 and he lacks the longevity of Malone and Duncan.
Utah underachieved. For a full decade Utah was a title contender and the result was 2 Finals, 5 conference finals but no rings. Malone-Stockton had the advantage only Jordan-Pippen had: a duo of all-time greater caliber which was together for an era, not a few years like, say, Shaq-Penny.
Don't get me wrong. Malone and Barkley are great players but things like this are what separates a top 10 all-time player from top 20-25 all time players.
