Someone with his talent and athleticism shouldn't be shooting 45% from the field anyway. He needs to play 18 feet or closer to the basket and shoot over 50%, but he doesn't. Ever since the season he shot no threes for the season and he was over 50% from the field he's regressed every year since then.
Also take a peek at his free throw percentages, they've been sucking it up as well. He used to shoot over 70% or hover around that, not the dude is in the 50 percentile. Awful for $14 million a year.

By whom? Cause Pop isn't going to be there. The guy has been in the league since he was a teenager, he's a 9 year vet. He's not going to magically stop taking bad shots if he hasn't already.

He had 4 years of bad habits in high school. 9 years of bad habits with Atlanta, and now with the poorly constructed/spaced Detroit team he is on, he's creating even more bad habits trying to do things he shouldn't be trying to do. He's too far gone.

This. And it isn't like the Spurs are getting him anyway. Almost $14 million a year and it's like 3-4 years left on the contract.

Pop's replacement will still command respect and be solid because he has one of the best assistant coaching trees in the NBA.

Kobe shoots 45% and he's an all time great

The Spurs would rather a guy like Ersan Ilyasova. Josh Smith is untradeable.

Smith has been playing this way for over a decade, he's not changing anything as far as how/when he takes his shots.

What in the hell does Kobe have to do with anything? He plays a completely different game and a completely different position.

09-10 he only took 7 three pointers no reason he can't do that again. Also 45% is solid because he is a pseudo wing player.

Re: Josh Smith is a perfect fit with the Spurs
Well in any case this is a hypothetical thread. And the Spurs nor anyone else in the NBA isn't going to touch Josh Smith's contract. By the time he can be traded or be with a different team he'll be almost 31 years old if not already 31. So it's nice to dream about this and all, but it's a waste of time and a moot point.
Onto other things...

Re: Josh Smith is a perfect fit with the Spurs
My take on all this:
- Good coaching can at least mask some of the things wrong with Smith's game.
- Spurs aren't going to try to acquire Smith's bad contract.
- Smith isn't a good fit for San Antonio anyway. Gonna play PF with Splitter at C and Leonard at SF?
We're just going to have to see what SVG can do with Smith in Detroit because no one is touching that contract. Smith isn't a completely bad player, but his contract is undealable.
