    duh

but the fact that coopers a wing and won DPOTY without being a mega star must tell ya something

it means he was legit the best defensive player in basketball during the 80's

( bigs can lean on rebounds as half their defensive ability ... winning it without being a rebounder is amazing )

All true. You're still dumb as shit though. Rodman making it into the HOF based on rings and defense? As I said...dumb as shit.

rebounding is part of defense... DUMB SH*T

why do you think bigs win DPOTY 99% of the time.. and 9 times out of 10 its cause they lead the league in rebounding... DUMB SH*T

99% of the time? Out of all 31 awards, 7 have been won by non big men. That's not exactly 99%...then you have players like Gasol and Chandler, who never led the league in rebounding. Garnett was winning the award rebounding in single digits.

The only players who won DPOTY while being rebounding leaders besides Rodman are Ben Wallace, Mutombo and Dwight. And they would've been the best defensive players with 2-3 less rebounds just as well.

You're f*cking clueless. Could've been a decent topic. Turns out you don't know shit.

The big difference is Rodman being 7 time consecutive rebounding champ, and a 2X defensive player of the year, and was an all-star. Compared to Cooper 1x defensive player of the year and never an all-star.

Rodman has 12K rebs, and averaged 13.1 rpg for his career. What averages does Cooper have to stand out and be in the HOF. Cooper's 8.9 ppg. 3.2 rpg 4.2 apg are not HOF worthy.

Coop for sure is one of the top perimeter defenders of all time. Hell probably top 10 ever. And Coop was very versatile. He played and defended PG, SG, and SF. But there are many guys who could do the same like MJ, Kobe, Pippen, etc. With Rodman, u can argue he's the greatest rebounder AND defender ever for a forward. Rodman is also arguably the most versatile defender ever as well. He comes as close as anybody EVER in being able to defend PG-C. And on top of that five rings and DPOY honors. So Rodman's impact was simply on another level than Coop's.

But I will give Coop credit. In terms of fundamentals on both sides of the rock, he had it all. But he wasn't quite dominant enough on offense. I always felt Eddie Jones was a better version of Cooper. Eddie could also score 20 points on top of the versatility on both sides of the rock.

With McAdoo, the Lakers have a strict standard when it comes to getting numbers retired. I'd say the strictest in all of basketball, hell maybe even sports. So in the Lakers standard, I can see why his number wasn't retired. He didn't play for the Lakers a very long time and he wasn't as dominant as he was before. But he added a hell of a lot to the Lakers and was that final piece for those two rings in the early to mid 80's. In terms of offense, having Magic, Worthy, McAdoo, and Kareem out there is the scariest it gets for a defense!

Lakers are very strict when it comes to retiring jerseys but I think Coop should definitely have his # retired. Bob McAdoo obviously a much better player, at his best, than Coop but he was past his prime and after injuries with the Lakers, Michael was there for more time and did more for them, still Bob was a major role player in his years there and imho also deserved his jersey retired if the Lakers weren't so strict with it. Same can be said for Byron Scott but Cooper deserves it more than both.
As for the HoF, imo Cooper should definitely make it, but there are bigger snubs like Moncrief and Bobby Jones.

People underrating the **** out of Cooper here though.
Coop was a big asset for LA. His perimeter defense is at the very least top10 all-time, he could do a great job on PG's, SG's and SF's, while playing help D.. the only player winning DPOY off the bench, Bird called him the best defender he ever faced. He was a good shooter, developed into a deadly spot-up shooter for them. A terrific athlete that brought lots of spark off the bench. And who do you think was running the offense with Magic on the bench? That's right, Michael Cooper. Lakers didn't just lost for his defense , energy and spot-up shooting when he retired, they had nobody to come in for Magic, to playmake and handle the rock. When Magic was out Coop was averaging close (or actually over) 10 apg, on the regular, he was a really good passer and ball-handler.

It's not far-fetched to compare his situation to Rodman, so some of y'all should just quit with the nonsense. Coop has 5 rings, 1 DPOY and 8 all-defensive teams.. Overall imo Rodman was definitely a better/more impactful defensive player, let's not act like it ain't close though, and for perimeter D strictly, I would pick Cooper, Rodman of course one of the GOAT rebounders but he wasn't as good as Cooper offensively, like I've said Michael was a really good passer and spot-up shooter, could score in other ways too, great athlete. And Rodman was a more famous character so greatly improved his chances to make the all-star game. To say Dennis impact was definitely greater than Coop is right but to say on a whole nother level is dumb.
Rodman comes above Cooper for a HoF selection (what actually happened) but to say 'if Rodman is in, Cooper should be too' is not that far from the truth at all (there are better examples though).

Great points! In terms of Rodman, the rebounding is the main thing that set him apart from Cooper. Or the fact that Rodman could guard the power positions as well as perimeter. But in terms of D, Cooper could guard every position physically that he was capable of. And also play PG, SG, and SF on offense. I also agree about Coop or Byron Scott being more deserving of getting their number retired than McAdoo.
