The mistake was made by Wade.

1.) He could've shot the three right when he caught it. He had an open look.

2.) When he pumped faked the defender in the air he could've blown by him to the rim, which is even better, probably a foul and a good chance for and1.

3.) He decided not to do this and to try to step back beyond the 3 line again.

The hitch you speak of is due to slow motion of the gif. It wasn't that slow.

The slow motion gif actually makes it less noticeable because it's harder to judge the speed.

It was much more noticeable in real time.

I mean, just watch the gif.

He goes to step back with his left foot, and then right before he puts his foot down, he extends his left foot back even further to get it behind the 3 point line.

If he would have just put his left foot down the first time, it would have been fine.

But because he extended it further out after almost putting it down the first time, he created hesitation in his movement making it a travel.

It was an easy call in real time.
