The camera angle is looking down - the front of the rim is lower than the back of the rim. So he actually is a little bit higher than what the picture suggest.

Jesus... I thought that still picture was a bad angle and made it look higher than what it was, but on the gif it looks like he hit his shoulder on the backboard. Might have been the perfect jump where the whole CNS hits into place and you get a peak jump.

There is actually proof that thinking about the certain muscles your training can actually stimulate more growth and power, etc.
That's why you can get dudes who weigh maybe 165lbs and are deadlifting 500lbs for reps. Its more than just muscle fibres and what not. Mind is a big part of it.
