When I used to play ball, the hook was my shot. I'd work on it endlessly on both hands. I figured it was the most unstoppable shot of all time, if it worked for Kareem it could work for me. That and the dude that basically thought me how to ball was a 5'7 Mexican cat that would kill dudes taller than him with that shot all day. My goal was to perfect it and shoot it better than him... .and I did. I'd swish them with my off hand from the corner with ease, full hook shot, baby hook, running hook, off the spin hook, flick of the wrist partial hook, name it I 'had' it.... trick is, strong forearms and wrist for control *insert joke here *

Wrist strength really is a major factor, especially with your off hand where your average run of the mill played HS ball type guy doesn't have much of an off hand scoring wise. Pretty much anyone has touch with their dominant hand, enough to make a hook a weapon anyway, but it really takes some work with the off hand. I have average sized hands, doing back to the basket work with your off hand, regardless of if you're a post or not, really makes you respect the learning curve NCAA/NBA bigs have to go through. The shit is HARD, I can't imagine doing it with hand big enough to hold a basketball like a baseball.

I have small hands so it is crucial for me to spread out my fingers in order to balance the ball (for better control), so I can see the cons of having large hands as well, I'm not sure how Kareem was able to have such a soft touch with those large hands.

What I used to do to work on my hook is simple, may appear silly, but was very helpful.

I'd stand right under the rim, and just flick the ball up over and over. I'd start with a full swoop, then gradually decrease the amount of my hook to the point I was simply flicking my wrist (well.... almost). I'd then put one hand inside my shirt and do everything completely with one hand, shoot and rebound, this only got my off hand control even better. This was to strengthen my forearms, wrists for maximum control, work on the backboard angles, proper touch/ball rotation and then I'd gradually move from under the rim to further distances and angles. But by then, the most essential work was done, which was getting my wrists and arms/forearms strong. Hitting hook shots from different distances and angles became much easier after laying that foundation.

Its been a while since I hooped so if we played horse you'd probably kill me.
