2nd Greatest Player
Re: What makes Bird greater than Shaq/Duncan?
They are all in the same level. These 3 players are just barely outside the top 5. ( 6, 7,8)

Shaq was better than Duncan. And was not an ideal franchise player.
Duncan was not better than Shaq. And was a ideal franchise player.
Bird played on Shaq's level while being a true franchise player.
So that's that. Bird > Shaq & Duncan

It can't be rings. It can't be individual accomplishments. It can't be who was better during their primes. It can't be longevity.
What is it?
I have shaq above bird. Bird over Duncan primarily through the eye-test

I'd take Duncan and Shaq over Bird probably...but that has a little more to do with longevity I think.

Bird >>>>>>>>>>>>> Shaq because Bird didn't play for the Fakers, so his rings aren't tainted (David Stern given).
Bird > Duncan because Bird didn't have 2nd GOAT PF/C/SG/PG in his team. Duncan has 2nd GOAT SG in Manu.

Game. Set. Match.
Re: What makes Bird greater than Shaq/Duncan?
All 3 are typically ranked in the top 10 GOAT... so let's not act like people create some huge divide between them. I actually have them ranked consecutively at #6, 7, and 8.

Re: What makes Bird greater than Shaq/Duncan?
Shaq:
4 Titles
3 FMVPs
1 MVP
14 All-NBA Teams (1st-8, 2nd-2, 3rd-4)
3 All-NBA second team defense
Bird:
3 Titles
2 FMVPs
3 MVPs
10 All-NBA Teams (1st-9, 2nd-1)
3 All-NBA Second Team Defense
Factor is Shaqs longevity is also superior (he played 50 percent more games than Bird) and a similar (I'd take Shaq, but see the argument for Bird) prime........
I still don't see how you could phrase an argument to make Bird above Shaq on the GOAT lists, which he generally is by most people who do them.

Duncan:
4 Titles
3 FMVPs
2 MVP
14 All-NBA Teams (1st-10, 2nd-3, 3rd-1)
14 All-NBA Defense (1st-8, 2nd-6)
Does Bird's prime and 1 more MVP make up for the difference of Duncans 1 more title, 1 FMVP, 4 All-NBA teams and 11 All-NBA Defense?
Not only make up for the difference, but push him ahead?

This thread is a great reason for the "tiered" structure employed by some.
