Though I understand where you're coming from, this is an awful example. You do know Reed played injured during an important NBA Finals game, right?
And by important, I'm talking about a Game 7, winner takes all. |

This is backwards. While he couldn't fly and dunk with great creativity or shoot those long flashy 3 point shots, his overall floor game was as good any player of all time from a technical standpoint. His defense was underrated as well. A few weeks ago Sonny Hill told a story on his radio show of how Earl Monroe told him after his rookie year he had to bulk up in the off season after playing against Oscar, who could physically control him on the defensive end to the point where he couldn't do anything effectively. Though this could be attributed to the handcheck. He may be the strongest guard to ever play physically. There were some opponents who related incidental contact with him to being hit by NFL legend Jim Brown. In the video example below, look how he bumps off powerful forward Chet Walker with great ease and grace. In the following play, Wali Jones (an aggressive in your face defender ala Payton) is completely helpless on the baseline against Oscar, who makes it look so incredibly easy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0aECiYcdvIE&t=3m16s |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HE6kIu34Qsc&t=24m50s Difficult angle shot on the baseline. Not too many could hit this one over Russell. Russell Rules: 11 Lessons on Leadership From the Twentieth Century's Greatest Winner - Bill Russell When I played against Oscar Robertson, for example, I thought for a while that he had 360-degree vision. He seemed to know where everyone on the court was at all times; he could thread a pass through the eye of a needle, through a football scrimmage of bodies. But he didn't really have 360-degree vision at all; he had this peculiar ability great athletes have to focus. Where an ordinary player would see whatever was in front of him and whatever his peripheral vision took in, a player like Oscar would be able to eliminate everything between him and the player he wanted to pass to or the area where he had to get to shoot or set up a play. His vision then narrowed like a laser beam. Within that beam he could slow down or speed up the action as need demanded. But then everything outside that beam wasn't visible to him! I realized his great seeing power made him blind! And that allowed me to work invisibly against him. I could move into these blind zones and attack the ball or the player without being seen. ![]() ![]() |

I believe that Kobe did feel like he had to give it a go to show his team that he would do anything he could to play if it helped the team win, and setting the example was more important than anything he actually did in the game. He will usually not talk about an injury as though not talking about it means he isn't injured. I guess he couldn't deny it since he had to leave the game. I'm a Laker fan, first and foremost, but I have to give Kobe credit for his will and ability to play through pain. For Kobe, to a fault, there isn't THAT much difference between a regular season game and a playoff game in terms of playing through injury and pain. His team beat a very good Pacer team on the road (where the Lakers have sucked this year). Impossible to say if Kobe giving it a go was an inspiration to his mates, but they did do what they were not expected to do. I still don't think they're ready to advance past the first round as a 7th or 8th seed, but it's getting better. I'd like Kobe to take a few games off to let his team find more of their game without him, and to let his ankle heal a bit more properly, but I'm not sure they have that luxury and Kobe likely doesn't want to risk falling back out of the playoff picture. Moving up to the sixth seed would make their chances of advancing past the first round better, but the road to get there is no cake walk even the way they're playing lately (and still mediocre at best against legit contenders, and even that is a stretch). One game at a time, and this was a good team (what I truly care about) win on the road. I'll take it. |

I didn't really bother to read his rankings, but you're right about that post up ranking being exactly backwards.. |
Re: willis reed plays a few minutes seriously injured with 2 baskets. get all the credit
I guess some people don't realize that Robertson was an incredible mid range shooter and had a heck of a post game.

lol i realise it. but kobe and bird are 2 of the 3 greatest midrange shooters in nba history. the other is michael jordan just because i rank him last on a list of 3 doesnt mean i think hes bad its KOBE BRYANT ( 5th best player ever ) and LARRY BIRD ( 7th best player ever ) vs oscar ... ( whos not even top 10 ) |

dude.. put me in the 50's, 60's and i'd make an nba team. possibly start. the average highschool star could dribble circles around those guys. the only translatable players were big men due to the limmited style of play kobe and bird in oscars era would drop 60ppg as for mid range shooting. are you honestly saying oscar robertson is a better shooter than kobe ( arguably the greatest midrange shooter ever ) or larry bird ( arguably the greatest shooter ever period? ) |
