2012-13 EC predictions (before the season starts)

And yes, i'm making this thread because of Jballer. :oldlol: I would like to just bump the other 4-5 threads where he has 10 teams definitely a ahead of us but i'd rather just keep it simple and have a prediction thread of the EC standings.

Official Rules:
- 2 points for each correct team in the exact spot
- 16 bonus points for all 8 playoff teams in in exact order.
- 10 bonus points for all 8 playoff teams in any order.
- 4 bonus points for 6 playoff teams in any order

Last years final standings
1. Chicago 50-16
2. Miami 46-20
3. Indiana 42-24
4. Boston 39-27
5. Atlanta 40-26
6. Orlando 37-29
7. New York 36-30
8. Philly 35-31
9. Milwaukee 31-35
10. Detroit 25-41
11. Toronto 23-43
12. NJ 22-44
13. Cleveland 21-45
14. Washington 20-46
15. Charlotte 7-59

Bokes15 predictions:

1. Miami
2. Boston
3. Indiana
4. NJ Nets
5. NY Knicks
6. Philly
7. Chicago
8. Milwaukee
9. Atlanta
10. Toronto
11. Washington
12. Detroit
13. Orlando
14. Cleveland
15. Charlotte

That's my official prediction but I really feel like 1-6 is pretty solid, it may not end up in that order but I feel strongly that those will be the top 6 teams in the EC. But then 7-13 i'm pretty unsure about because all of those teams have a lot of questions so we'll see what happens.

Interesting. I don't have a problem with those picks except for Chicago at 3 without Rose until March. I don't see that happening at all.

I actually struggle with 9 through 12.

I feel solid on Washington making the playoffs - though other disagree here. Talent - experience - and an improvement to middling defence much like the Raptors were able to accomplish last year will move them up. Walls turnovers are a combination of "lacking talent to pass too", "trying to do too much on his own" and "sophmore jinx". With Nene / Okafur in the low post - lots of pick and rolls for Wall. Beal doesnt need to do much more than float to the open spot, stoke a wide open bucket or 5 or 10, and learn to play some dedicated D against guys that want to school him. The last will be hardest.

Toronto and Detroit - so much depends on deliverence of "upside" in multiple players - even moreso than other teams in the conference with rookies. Demar Derozan and Brandon Knight. Val and Drummond. The big men need to show up and also "get the calls from the refs in their favor" not just against them. Both have big men options that can score - Barges/Monroe.

Toronto should be ahead because KLow is a proven PG even though Tay is a proven swingman. Tay is older than Jesus - Klow is in his prime.

Both have cap (Detroit if it amnesties Charile V next year) and both will be interesting to see how they develop over the next 2 years.

Both teams will knock down a number of teams from above once the talent is proven or another player is added. Note most of the teams above have no cap room for 3+ years ! (Atlanta could have if they blow everyone off roster).

Should award points for this end of season

Re: 2012-13 EC regular season prediction game

My memory is hazey, can someone please tell me why Chicago wouldn't be struggling to make the playoffs? How long is rose out for? What offseason moves did they make?

I'm also thinking we can finish ahead of ATL and the bucks.

Miami - obvious
Boston - lost ray, but have jet and Avery coming back from injury
Indy - will win the central with rose being injured
Brooklyn - a lot of talent, injuries will play a role due to thin roster
Philly - could finish ahead of the nets, I feel their success will depend on turner
NY - too much talent to finish lower, but not enough to beat Brooklyn due to dwill facilitating vs melo hindering the offense. Philly should have better chemistry and will have Bynum anchoring an already stiffling defense
Chicago - if rose comes back early enough, they will still make the post season. The rest of the team will need to hold it down, and deng possibly skipping the wrist surgery could be a bad decision.
Washington - wall was supposed to explode last year. I think his breakout will be this year with a regular schedule and training camp.
Toronto - I think they will finish just shy of the playoffs.

Don't really feel like thinking the rest of the EC standings...

I BEEN saying this. I don't know if people just believe this team without Rose is much better than I think it is, but Rose is likely out for most of the season. The reports have been out that he is out until late March. The regular season ends in April, so best case scenario they probably get 10-15 games out of him. And he's not gonna come in as MVP Rose right away either.

7. NY Knicks
8. Atlanta
9. Milwaukee
10. Toronto
11. Cleveland
12. Washington
13. Charlotte
14. Detroit
15. Orlando

10-15 im really not too sure, i think it could be a jumpball

8/9 could be interchangeable, I think Milwaukee has a slight edge on Atlanta in terms of their backcourt but Atlanta still has the more talented frontcourt

5-7 to me are very fluid depending on how Chicago does without Rose and how well the Knicks do in general

I think 1-4 is pretty much set, the only question mark being philly but I really think the trade makes them a much more dangerous team. They now have a deep post threat as opposed to last year, and evan turner and jrue holiday look to be turning the corner in terms of their development

Indiana to me is the sleeper even though I have them at 2, they really should be in the ECF when all is said and done.

they only really need him for the post-season.

Doesn't mean much. There's a difference between losing a guy at various times here and there throughout the course of a season and actually facing the fact that they won't have him until well after the all-star break. They definitely still have a solid roster, capable of playing +.500 ball, but I don't think the transition of replacing him almost full time with Hinrich/Teague is gonna be a seemless as people seem to think.

Re: 2012-13 EC regular season prediction game

I see a lot of down on Chicago and high on Brooklyn.

I see that backwards.

Interestingly my take is Chicago will be fine - not first place but solid upper half behind Miami Boston Indy et al

Brooklyn is a team I see some issues for. Chemistry wont be there right off the bat. Johnson always suspect of lazy defense. Gwal is old. Still on Dron. Is the big man Lope as real as the promise and money or does he coast on the big contract being the 4th option?? Too talented not to make the playoffs but a weak start to the season would not surprise me..... loosing some games to a team like Toronto when they are expected to win....

Now hardly surprising cause I do have Washington a lot higher than most or all you.... but season will tell.

Re: 2012-13 EC regular season prediction game

*Bump Thread*

Not that this should change your mind but an interesting take.

[url]https://bleacherreport.com

Post Olympic Power ranking

25 Toronto Raptors
For the first time in a long time, the Toronto Raptors acquired talent worth acquiring.

By obtaining Kyle Lowry from the Houston Rockets, the Raptors not only showed that they are ready to move on from Jose Calderon, but they are also serious about competing and becoming a relevant team.

It's either that or get left way behind in a stacked Atlantic Division. It's a given that they'll most likely end up behind four teams that could make the postseason, but it's a positive that they'll actually feature some solid talent worth relying on.

Joining Lowry will be draft picks Terrence Ross and Quincy Acy, as well as Landry Fields, John Lucas III and Jonas Valanciunas, who was the Raptors' lottery pick from last year. Hopefully, the Olympics aren't a strong showing of what to expect next year, because Valanciunas didn't exactly impress anyone in his time with Lithuania.

Then again, it's not as if Linas Kleiza ever plans on transferring his expertise in the international game to the NBA.

Also, they gave Landry Fields $20 million. Sorry to bring it up.

24. Detroit Pistons

They're not exactly on par with their counterparts of the late-1980's or the mid-'2000's, but the 2012 Detroit Pistons can at least say they're on the right track to becoming a quality team.

Through an excellent draft where they took center Andre Drummond, power forward Khris Middleton and guard Kim English, the Pistons have surrounded a young, talented roster with even more talent that could potentially change the outlook of this team for the better.

You may not have noticed, but the Pistons started to look really good by season's end and will be looking to carry that momentum into the coming season.

While the Pistons didn't do much in terms of free agency, they're more reliant on the roster they have instead of pursuing players who could potentially make the team better. It's not that bad of an idea considering the team is sporting the likes of Brandon Knight and Greg Monroe.

However, the team did trade away Ben Gordon for Corey Maggette, and that's always a good thing.

21 Milwaukee Bucks

I can't believe I'm saying it, but who else is excited for Milwaukee Bucks basketball?

In recent years, the Bucks have been playing this incoherent and jumbled mess of a game on the offensive end. Even with Brandon Jennings running the point, the Bucks couldn't snap out of this offense that set a limit at 95 points as its max. They were a good defensive team, but their offense was too inconsistent to support the entire team.

That may change this season. Set to play in their first full season together, Jennings and Monta Ellis combine to form one of the league's most dynamic backcourts. Jennings' abilities as a shooter and Ellis' abilities to drive means that there should be little discrepancy between the two when it comes to finding their spots on the floor.

The Bucks will be coming out the gates with a slightly new roster with Samuel Dalembert set to replace Andrew Bogut and rookie John Henson looking to make his voice heard as the team's resident shot-blocker

20 Washington Wizards

Month by month goes by, and the Washington Wizards are appearing less like the laughingstock of the NBA and more like a team that's striving for relevance.

They took another step in the right direction this offseason. They utilized the draft to fill in a void at the two by selecting Bradley Beal and traded the contract of Rashard Lewis for Emeka Okafor and Trevor Ariza.

With Okafor and Ariza possibly joining Nene Hilario in the starting frontcourt next year, the Wizards suddenly don't look all that bad. Also, with the Orlando Magic losing a lot of ground and going into rebuilding mode, the Wizards could take advantage and become the third-best team in a division that may only have one postseason team.

The Wizards will continue to rely on young talent to get them to the next level, as they will also be continuing to keep a close eye on the development of Trevor Booker, Kevin Seraphin, Jordan Crawford and Jan Vesely.

Most of all, they'll be looking to John Wall to begin taking the next step

I'm not entirely sure, but atm I do think the wizard will be much improved this season (largely depends on Wall finally having some talent and players with correct attitudes around him), Cavs/Raps/Pistons all seem about the same to me right now. Nets at 5 (haven't seen them play, i like the backcourt, not sold on their frontcourt)
- actual result will probably be very different :oldlol:

-I think Miami is a no brainer for the #1 spot.
-Pacers were very solid last year and had a good playoff showing, can't see another team being better than them (regular season) other than Miami.
-Brooklyn's record depends on their health, but they added Joe Johnson and should finish ahead of Boston because of the age factor.
-I think Boston is probably the 2nd best team in the East but their age and injuries will play a factor in their regular season record.
-Knicks have Two superstars, and added veteran depth. With Linsanity over, its time for the two superstars to step it up.
-Philly lost their best player but have great depth behind him, and added the 2nd best Center in the league.
-Chicago will struggle early, but when/if Rose comes back, they'll be able to sneak into the playoffs. Record depends on how quickly Rose returns to game action/100%.
-Atlanta is still a pretty talented team, but they'll be in a battle for the last spot.

I see Chicago strugging early on then basically they will try and tank and get a good pick then win the lottery then when Rose is back next year they will be even more deadly.

Re: 2012-13 EC regular season prediction game

Also a very possible outcome. I think it depends on just how badly they do without Rose. If they're playing around .500 and he's available to come back in February, I think he comes back. Though, if they struggle really badly, I could definitely see him just sitting out the year.

Re: 2012-13 EC regular season prediction game

Just an FYI for anyone curious:
http://www.rantsports.com/courtcrusa...o-bulls-owner/
Quote:

As Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose continues to rehab his torn ACL, there has been wide speculation as to when the former MVP will be back in action. While reports have ranged from an optimistic January return to as long as the entire season, Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf weighed in on the matter during a radio appearance on ESPN 1000’s “Talking Baseball” show Saturday.

“I’m not going to let him come back until the doctors tell me that it’s absolutely safe for him to come back,” Reinsdorf said. “I made that mistake with Michael Jordan years ago where I think we let him come back too soon. It worked out OK, but it might not have. This time I’m not going to make that mistake. Until the doctors say he’s 100 percent and they put their reputations on the line, he’s not coming back.”

Hearing Reinsdorf compare Rose to Jordan is a positive sign for Bulls fans, considering the owner’s unwillingness to invest in a team that isn’t a title contender. The Bulls will pay the luxury tax this year for the first time in the team’s history, despite a lackluster offseason. Despite trade rumors surrounding the 2012 NBA Draft, Chicago ultimately opted to keep the core in tact, while replacing the “Bench Mob” that had helped lead the Bulls to the best record in the NBA last season. The replacements: Kirk Hinrich, Nate Robinson, Marco Belinelli, Nazr Mohammed and draft pick Marquis Teague. Not terrible, but not players that put the team in a better position to compete for a title.

Despite the loss of Rose, the Bulls will likely be playoff bound in the weaker Eastern Conference. But with several teams upgrading in free agency and through the draft as well as the Miami Heat looking more dominant than ever, the Bulls could be stuck in “basketball hell” until greater changes are made.

Sucks for them that if they really pull the strategy of hover around .500 until whenever he comes back and them make a playoff push, there are quite possibly gonna be at least 3 or 4 teams that are significantly better than them by that point. And they don't have a team that even with a healthy D.Rose can legitimately compete for a title or even an EC crown.

Re: 2012-13 EC regular season prediction game

I agree that Nets being high up there is hardly a given.

D-Will has a horrible attitude and Joe Johnson can disappear for multiple games in a row.

Williams has an attitude problem? I'm not very familiar with that other than the whole Jerry Sloan thing.

The Nets are definitely a mystery of a team, but with health, they could definitely compete for home court advantage in the east. Playing in the toughest division in the East may hurt their record a bit, but I think they're an obvious playoff team with the ability to make a pretty decent run.

-Joe Johnson playing with the best PG he's ever played with
-Deron Williams playing with the best swingman he's ever played with.
-Health from Williams and Lopez will go a long way
-Gerald Wallace can focus on his defense/rebounding with Johnson on board
-MarShon Brooks probably continues to improve
-Reggie Evans AND Kris Humphries taking the brunt of the dirty work away from Lopez.

They aren't the deepest team, but if they could add another 3 point threat to their bench, I think they're in a pretty favourable position going forward.

IMO D-Will doesn't have attitude problems, at least not serious ones. Guys like Demarcus Cousins and Andrew Bynum as an example, those are guys with clear bad attitudes. It's well documented and lots of people say they haven't liked coaching them or playing with them. In the case of D-Will, he like many other great players allowed his emotions to get the best of him when things weren't going his way in terms of the team, the roster, winning, all of that. You see that happen with many of the greats. Dirk, Kobe, Lebron, etc... they all had bouts of it. But I feel as though on this team with his new teammates, he will be happy again, and full committed to winning. I don't think they will have anything to worry about in terms of his attitude, he's just an ultra competitive dude and that's a good thing.

One other thing I thought of just now is that Andrew Bynum is gonna be playing for the SIXERS. Doug Collins seems to be the right type of coach for him. He's down to earth it seems but he's also no nonsense. I think he'll force Bynum to give more of an effort on the defense end and to stop half assing the way he does. And that sense of entitlement of his, out the door. And I didn't even know they were gonna get J-Rich as well. They have quite a solid team over there too.

Philadelphia has greatly improved their team. I actually think that Arnett Moultrie will have a very good rookie season. Evan Turner and Thaddeus Young will have a lot more responsibilities but I think they will both thrive with Iggy out of the way. Nick Young is a pretty hot and cold player but he is a definite threat from beyond the arc. And as Bokes said, add in the veteran leadership and athleticism of Jason Richardson, you've got a pretty dangerous team capable of making some noise.

In all honesty, IMO even as a 1-1 trade Bynum >>>> Iggy. Amazing trade for the Sixers to get Bynum and Jrich for Iggy. He's actually 3 years younger and a bigger impact player due to his size and position. As I said If he can get his attitude in check and remain relatively healthy, they're in for a steal. Then they can plug in Nick Young for instant offense off the bench behind J-Rich. I wasn't aware that Lou Will went to the Hawks, so that may hurt their depth a little but who knows maybe Jrue Holiday will step up and have a break out season. He's only 22. And playing with a true back to the basket Center will help all those perimeter guys out anyways.
