Is it me or does espn suck now
I remember watching an hour of sportscenter and I would be up to date with all of sports.
I remember watching first take and laughing my ass off at Skip and SAS trolling their ass off, nothing but nonstop jokes left to right.
I remember waking up turning on sportscenter and getting up to date with all my b-ball but just last week they literally showed a NBA game highlight that had nothing to do with the game it was a highlight of how many towel boys it took to clean up a spilled drink. Nowadays its just express with one highlight being showed to the winning team but when it comes to football they'll damn near show you the whole game.
I cant even watch a halftime show during a NBA game because its just so casual and dumb. Not entertaining whatsoever.

Re: Is it me or does espn suck now
Well, their analysis isn't much better than what you read on forums. They pretty much just ring count to compare players and for teams, they just talk about whatever teams are the most popular at the moment.

I suppose you didn't watch first take during Lebrons 2011 ring campaign. Probably the finest television I have ever watched. Dude literally got me angry as **** one day.

Re: Is it me or does espn suck now
i dont even know who half their commentators for games are. and if i can, i always prefer to watch the local announcers over any of theirs.

Re: Is it me or does espn suck now
I stick to NBA TV.
Also i live in Canada where Sports Center is all Hockey all the time.......puke.

Re: Is it me or does espn suck now
I apologize in advance for re-posting something I shared here just yesterday, but this is the Sportscenter I miss: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DucRYEnRLI
It used to be like clockwork. I'd know I could tune in on the hour and I'd see a show full of highlights and news. You could always count on 90% of full NBA highlights being provided within the hour and you'd have a very strong idea for when they'd be shown (sometimes something like a Grizzlies/Hawks game would get a score only). If you missed the highlights you wanted to see, you knew when you could tune in the next hour to see full clips (if you had time).
Now, it feels all over the place for me. Sportscenter doesn't seem to lead with the top four games of the day alongside full highlights. Instead, it feels like there's a featured game (usually involving the Heat, Knicks, or Lakers) and that'll lead into more air time of ESPN folks discussing the contest than showing what happened in the contest itself.
Even in the late 90's, when the Pistons were just a middle of the road team, I knew they probably wouldn't make the first segment of Sportscenter, but I knew I could catch their full highlights if I stuck around a little. Now, if I want to see Pistons highlights from the night prior and Sportscenter is my intended source for that information, I'm pretty much completely screwed. There'll be four segments on LeBron James' hairline before they show an Express Pistons clip of Lawrence Frank shaking Frank Vogel's hand in a loss. Then they'll move on to a segment on whether Kobe passed enough last night.

Re: Is it me or does espn suck now
ESPN has been bad for quite some time now. I'd say for a good 5+ years.
-
Re: Is it me or does espn suck now
Now? This question presupposes that ESPN hasn't sucked for a very long time.
-
Re: Is it me or does espn suck now
It's been awful for a long time. I only watch it when a game is on.

True. I still remember a while ago when I was on NBA Tv Gametime I knew I missed the segment where Bradley Beal hit a game winner against the Nets. I didn't have time to watch another segment of Gametime so I watched an hour of Sportscenter and not one mention of it. I was extremely dissapointed and to this day I haven't seen the game winner nor will casual fans even know about it. Meanwhile SC will gladly put a halfcourt heave of a womens hs game on their top 10 without any questions asked

In fact, I'm guessing the existence of that show and others on their own respective pro networks may be part of the reason ESPN switched things up so dramatically.
Still, I miss being able to catch up on all sports highlights in one hour-long program.

Re: Is it me or does espn suck now
The 6pm Sportscenter sucks because that "goofy a$$ white girl" is one of the anchors
She looks like a "permanent intern"
-
Re: Is it me or does espn suck now
ESPN peaked in the 90's and early 2000's and then with no competition, they turned into a joke entertainment show.
-
Re: Is it me or does espn suck now
sportscenter has gone down. i mean if i wanted highlights from other than the NBA, ill go there but NBA Gametime while so predictable and boring is still better than sportscenter.
however ESPN is still good with live sports. Maybe the ABC crew sucks in their NBA Coverage compared to TNT but everything else sucks in comparison to TNT's coverage.
I still enjoy whatever 30 for 30 episode is showing, X-Games coverage but other than that everything else is shit. Sportscenter especially. hate the way they waste like 15 mins on a big event letting every analyst in the building having a turn on their 2 cents.

Re: Is it me or does espn suck now
How do Boston fans feel about Bill Simmons? One of the most annoying personalities on ESPN imo.

Re: Is it me or does espn suck now
SC was good in the 1980s and early 1990s. The espn2 highlight show was nice too. That channel had a good show for a couple years.
SC jumped the shark in 1996. When the show made an appearance in a Hootie and the Blowfish video ESPN really got full of itself. The SC commercials started around that time, maybe a year later. By the way, those commercials, while funny, are quite useless. Really, what is the point?

I actually felt Sportscenter still ran a good ship throughout the 90's. The catch phrases may have become a little much, but they still stuck to showing the good stuff (that is, highlights) in an orderly and effective fashion.
As for the point of the This is Sportscenter ads? We're living it. How did Sportscenter ever become such a big deal? What helped really propel it into the stratosphere? What helped draw attention to ESPN's flagship morning program? Sportscenter commercials.

Hey, at least they still have SVP and Rusillo

Re: Is it me or does espn suck now
They are WAY TOO football dominant. Now that baseball is bak, they will cover it to death. They treat basketball like it doesn't exist outside of NY, Miami, OKC, and Los Angeles.

I agree with this. The 90's was the golden era of ESPN and Sportscenter. It was still very strong in the early 2000's as well. ESPN is still useful because of all their live games, but channels such as NBA TV, MLB Network, and NFL Network have limited their importance, at least for me.

If they could cover basketball like they do during the playoffs (fantastic coverage) espn would be a lot better.

Re: Is it me or does espn suck now
I usually just watch ESPN during NFL season and NBA playoffs. I usually watch Around the Horn and PTI. First Take sucks now.
-
Re: Is it me or does espn suck now
I had an opportunity to watch Around the Horn today for the first time in many years. Question, is Woody Paige okay? I almost did not recognize him him due to weight gain.
-
Re: Is it me or does espn suck now
Espn sucks especially since they act like Lebron is tha best player since Jordan:facepalm
-
Re: Is it me or does espn suck now
I usually watch Mike and Mike in the mornings, but I don't enjoy it as much anymore. The banter feels really fake, and the whole Greenie=metrosexual/Golic=tough guy thing is getting old.
If I'm off work or something, I'll tune in to the Herd or First Take and watch a few minutes, but I have no expectations and just try to find amusement in the arguing that takes place.
I haven't watched too much Sportscenter lately, though it does seem as if every former NFL/NBA player gets a job as an "analyst." Each Laker/Heat game merits a roundtable discussion on a nightly basis.
Overall, I sometimes feel as if sports isn't meant to be covered 24/7. Sometimes, it's too much. Also, I'm sick and tired of debate shows.
Overall, I sometimes feel as if sports isn't meant to be covered 24/7. Sometimes, it's too much. Also, I'm sick and tired of debate shows.
With ESPN's current format, I feel you. If a network came around devoted to the idea of sport though? As in, all sports? I think there'd be more than enough content.
However, as we know, that doesn't seem likely, ever. I think ESPN was more of a true sports network in the 90's and prior than they are now. Yes, they showed tractor pull events, Australian rules football, and Billiards, but those were still (mostly) sports and even though I'm not always a fan of those corners of athletics, it created a better sense of ESPN being a sports hub than what we see today.
Basically, I think it used to be a network that'd show a little bit of many different sports. Now we're fed a ton on a very little amount of parts of sports. The mission statement has clearly changed. At one point, there seemed to be a little more emphasis on the essence of sports and when that's the case, there's a lot more worthwhile programming that comes along with it.

Re: Is it me or does espn suck now
it is garbage.
I haven't watched in prpb 5-6 years unless there is an NBA game on.

Re: Is it me or does espn suck now
Terrible programming , just turned it on, nothing but heat segments lined up, and one kobe segment.
I would think weight loss would be a concern, not weight gain:facepalm
Well it could go either way. Weight loss is often a sign of disease. But weight gain can just as well be a sign of something like hypothyroidism or a result of kidney or liver dysfunction. He just looked terrible, though since asking that question I looked up his age and discovered he's 66, so I suppose that'll play a role too.
