Deadspin: Manti Te
http://deadspin.com/5976517/manti-teos-dead-girlfriend-the-most-heartbreaking-and-inspirational-story-of-the-college-football-season-is-a-hoax
Did you enjoy the uplifiting story, the tale of a man who responded to adversity by becoming one of the top players of the game? If so, stop reading.
Manti Te'o did lose his grandmother this past fall. Annette Santiago died on Sept. 11, 2012, at the age of 72, according to Social Security Administration records in Nexis. But there is no SSA record there of the death of Lennay Marie Kekua, that day or any other. Her passing, recounted so many times in the national media, produces no obituary or funeral announcement in Nexis, and no mention in the Stanford student newspaper.
Nor is there any report of a severe auto accident involving a Lennay Kekua. Background checks turn up nothing. The Stanford registrar's office has no record that a Lennay Kekua ever enrolled. There is no record of her birth in the news. Outside of a few Twitter and Instagram accounts, there's no online evidence that Lennay Kekua ever existed.
The photographs identified as Kekua—in online tributes and on TV news reports—are pictures from the social-media accounts of a 22-year-old California woman who is not named Lennay Kekua. She is not a Stanford graduate; she has not been in a severe car accident; and she does not have leukemia. And she has never met Manti Te'o.
Wow, this guy comes off as a huge fraud

Re: Deadspin: Manti Te
On September 11, Te'o suffered the loss of both his grandmother and girlfriend within the span of one day.[29] His girlfriend, Stanford student Lennay Kekua, died after battling leukemia.[30] Te'o missed no games, due to a promise made to his girlfriend. In a press conference Te'o spoke about his decision to remain at Notre Dame and play in the game versus Michigan State on the day of her funeral, saying, "I really wanted to see her [girlfriend Kekua]. But I knew that she made me promise, you know one day she made me promise that, she said, 'Babe, if anything happens to me, you promise that you'll still stay over there and that you'll play and that you'll honor me through the way you play, and know that I would rather have you there.' And just make sure that all she wanted was some white roses. White is her favorite color. So she just wanted some white roses and that's all she asked for. So I sent her roses and sent her two picks along with that, so that was good."[31]
So all of this is a lie? Wonder how dumb that guy is if he didn't think someone would find the truth.
-
Re: Deadspin: Manti Te
I also wonder how in the **** none of the journalists that wrote stories about this checked if she was real.
-
Re: Deadspin: Manti Te
"My bet is that deadspin just outed a gay guy to his Mormon family. Nice going, guys!"
"That was my initial thought too. He was dating a guy who pretends to be a girl online, and when people want to starting meeting "her" he freaks out and makes up a story about her dying without thinking how people will react. That's the only explanation I can come up with that doesn't involve Te'o being a terrible, terrible person."
-
Re: Deadspin: Manti Te
Just read this entire story. Holy shit. I'm really interested to see where this story goes. If true, this makes SI, ESPN and all of the other media outlets who promoted this story look like fools. Not to mention Manti..

Re: Deadspin: Manti Te
This is one of, if not the wildest sports story I've seen.

that would be crazy as hell if true.
-
Re: Deadspin: Manti Te
Bruce Feldman is reporting on Twitter that Notre Dame will be releasing a statement concerning this shortly.
-
Re: Deadspin: Manti Te
I wonder if this effects his draft stock.
-
Re: Deadspin: Manti Te
His draft stock just plummeted. He was exposed against Alabama, and now this?
-
Re: Deadspin: Manti Te
Thank god he didnt win the heisman.
Johnny Manziel parties his ass off but at least he aint a fraud.
-
Re: Deadspin: Manti Te
People who are wondering if Te'o was duped by his friend are stupid, Te'o claimed to spend time with her, it's completely apparent he was in on the whole thing. The worst part of it is they used his own grandmothers death to perpetrate the level of tragedy by claiming his GF died on the same day as his grandmother.
edit: not surprisingly, Notre Dame just released a statement that Te'o was the victim of the hoax and of course wasn't in on it.
-
Re: Deadspin: Manti Te
Some how it will be twisted that way.
This is insane.
Guy is either gay and covered it up with this or was just pulling this publicity stunt. I don't see another plausible explanation.
-
Re: Deadspin: Manti Te
so I wasn't taken this seriously, but I guess I should read up now...
Usually sites like Deadspin and TMZ don't try BS around...

Absolutely not true. Deadspin is a great website, they are definitely not anything like TMZ.
-
Re: Deadspin: Manti Te
Someone probably hacked it as a joke.
I laughed.
Not a big fan of twitter, but it's times like this that I love it. Up to date information and hilarity.

TMZ usually has "the goods"
when TMZ announces something I always take it seriously
they were the first ones on Tiger Woods...somehow TMZ always gets their hands on the real gossip first

the more I think about it those two scenarios seem to be the only possible explanation.
there is a slight slight slight slight SLIGHT chance he was fooled and was so embarrassed he just told people she died but... after telling so many people he met her in person...
I'm leaning toward the he is gay and didn't want to come out so he made her up to get his parents off his back theory.
-
Re: Deadspin: Manti Te
If he is gay he is going to have a really hard time in the NFL unfortunately
that one gay player on the Vikes that came out after he retired said he thought about suicide every day, had to use the ward "f@g" on a regular basis to fit in, and said had he come out of the closet he would have been shunned by his teammates and probably injured on purpose in practice drills...

Re: Deadspin: Manti Te
You have to be such a psychopath to create a lie of this proportions.
And it's insane to think only DeadSpin caught the contradictory in the stories. The rest of the media was playing it up until it was the story of the college football season.
Especially when you look back at the evidence and see how clearly it is. Perhaps because it's too deranged to even fathom.

y did u jump to the thought he might be ghey? i'm not too informed on the story so if there's some inklings fill me in
-
Re: Deadspin: Manti Te
That's insane. I wouldn't draft him based simply on perpetuating this hoax, as it hints to some strange shit going on in his head. It's not like he's a megatalent, he's not good enough to deal with crazy.

one of the theories in here is that he created this fictional girlfriend to cover up a gay relationship
-
Re: Deadspin: Manti Te
he just spoke
This is incredibly embarrassing to talk about, but over an extended period of time, I developed an emotional relationship with a woman I met online. We maintained what I thought to be an authentic relationship by communicating frequently online and on the phone, and I grew to care deeply about her. "To realize that I was the victim of what was apparently someone's sick joke and constant lies was, and is, painful and humiliating. "It further pains me that the grief I felt and the sympathies expressed to me at the time of my grandmother's death in September were in any way deepened by what I believed to be another significant loss in my life. "I am enormously grateful for the support of my family, friends and Notre Dame fans throughout this year. To think that I shared with them my happiness about my relationship and details that I thought to be true about her just makes me sick. I hope that people can understand how trying and confusing this whole experience has been. "In retrospect, I obviously should have been much more cautious. If anything good comes of this, I hope it is that others will be far more guarded when they engage with people online than I was. "Fortunately, I have many wonderful things in my life, and I'm looking forward to putting this painful experience behind me as I focus on preparing for the NFL Draft."
claims to be a victim like that dude on Catfish

Yeah, no. This quote has been making its rounds:
"They started out as just friends," Brian Te'o said. "Every once in a while, she would travel to Hawaii, and that happened to be the time Manti was home, so he would meet with her there. But within the last year, they became a couple.
Pretty pathetic of him. Hopefully he doesn't get a pass/this doesn't just die down without resolution.
-
Re: Deadspin: Manti Te
Yeah and a lot of news outlets reported that they met after the ND-Stanford game in person why would media report that? Why would Manti allow it to be reported if it was completely false?
-
Re: Deadspin: Manti Te
I am reading that he called her "the love of his life" in interviews :/
yet he never met this person in real life?
how embarrassing
wow

Re: Deadspin: Manti Te
Wait so he met this chick online and formed a "relationship". Never met her or anything. Just communicated via twitter? You're an All American college football player at Notre Dame a popular school. First rd draft pick. You got many females at your fingetips yet you choose an anonymous chick as your girl?
I'm totally lost on this because he is saying on espn.com that he was tricked. Kinda like people are online when trying to date people they never met in person. And then they find out its not a female or the female is someone totally different than their pictures. Those stories should never ever involved a big name college football player. :oldlol:
There was a movie or documentary of some guy meeting a chick off facebook and finding out she wasnt who she claimed she was. Swordfish? I forget, spooky, creepy shyt like this.

man...sigh...you can't have a "girlfriend" you have never met...much less a "love of your life"
this is just like when a kid lies about losing his virginity to someone out of town so that he doesn't have to tell people he is a virgin lol...only this is on a much bigger scale obviously

They making him out to be a full fledged victim right now. Some real stupid shit..

Would've been hilarious.

And its obvious the dude is trying to spin his way out of this epic shithole he created... Yea man, you were "tricked" alright. The guy created a fake girlfriend complete w/ her own life story and death, and actually expressed his enormous lie to the national media...

Who would have guessed one of the more prominent Mormons (or Hawaiians) in the country would get stopped by a missing birth certificate?
