Re: 2013-2014 Observation Deck
They're highly touted this year . Another Izzo final four upon us?
the key is Gary Harris staying healthy. we have pretty much the entire core returning (no Nix, but Payne and Dawson can pick up the slack plus Costello will step in, he's been really good in limited minutes), but no one that really can stretch the floor AND be disruptive on defence.
I know we have the defence to make it to the final four, we usually are near the top of the NCAA in that regard because of Izzo. But our consistency on offense is deplorable. I've given up on Appling as an outside threat, says he's been working on it, but he says that every year. Gary Harris having a big season will go a long way to us going deep into March.
If we don't make it this year, it will either be another 3 or 4 seasons, or Izzo might retire (the thought makes me shudder already) so this year is extremely important

I'm not really sure if UConn can improve this year. We have the best back court in the country but our front court is in shambles. Enosch Wolf left. Olander is currently suspended. Kentan Facey may not be eligible. DeAndre Daniels will probably be drafted after this year. I'm really hoping he picks up the load at PF and Nolan/Brimah hold down Center

Re: 2013-2014 Observation Deck
All the media days happening around now. My favorite time of the year.
Should be a fun season. You look at the preseason polls and it's littered with blue bloods. All five of them in the top 25. Then followed with the likes of Louisville, MSU, Zona, UConn, etc. Seasons when the best are traditionally the best are always fun. 2005 and 2008 off the top of my head as recent examples.
Great pre-season storylines as well. UK's super team, the freshman, Wiggins (as he deserves his own point), the newly aligned conferences/ending of old conferences, and quality returning players (Smart, Smith, McDermott, etc). By the way, Wiggins was named CBS's pre-season NPOY. Don't think I saw that posted.

Re: 2013-2014 Observation Deck
Quick UNC perspective because I have to.
1) We're rated too high. And when UNC likely struggles against a couple of the top teams without their best player, somehow the media will run with it like the university kicked their dog. There's a good chance before the coneference season starts, UNC plays pre-season #1, #2, and #3. UK as scheduled, Louisville in a tournament if both teams win their first cupcake game, and MSU in the Big Ten/ACC challenge.
2) No clue how long PJ Hairston will be out. Ever since his last traffic debacle, from all accounts (players, Roy, boosters) he's been doing everything right and working his ass off. From yesterday's media day, Roy said PJ has done more preseason conditioning than any player he has ever coached. To this point, he's done 3x as much as any player on the team.
An example he used was that PJ ran 100 33's (end of the court and back 3 times in 33 seconds) in less than an hour. Pretty impressive since that's almost 11 miles.
As far as how many games he will be out? Can't even begin to estimate. All I'm going to say is that at the end of the day, all he has to his name are 2 traffic tickets. And in light of Johnny Manziel's half game suspension... But then there's the wildcard that is the NCAA.
That's about it. Frosh look good, soph jumps, McAdoo admittedly slacked off in the offseason last year and is determined now, yada, yada, yada. I do expect PJ to play earlier rather than later and I am expecting an all-american type of season. Because he's just that good an the opportunity is right there. imo, there's a possibility he could be back for Michigan State. Ideally, I just want him for Kentucky. Not just because it's UK, but that will give him a solid handful of games under his belt before the conference slate starts.

i was really pessimistic about PJ at the start. Such a mess he got himself into. But Roy has done an amazing job smoothing this over with the AD and with the NCAA. I see him back by the start of the conference schedule.

Roy and the new AD, Bubba Cunningham. It would have drove me up the wall if Roy screwed up handling this PJ situation after the football fiasco.
Lesson learned: Don't bend over for the NCAA-they just **** you over.
Hopefully the suspension decision comes soon. We're right in the middle of both football seasons, so it will just get buried behind those headlines.
Burgz: What happened between you guys and Tyus Jones? MSU and Kansas were my last hope and you throw in the towel signing this sub-top 100 PG. Now it's two evils and we all know which evil he will end up choosing.

Shabazz Napier may go off and lead us to great things in March...that's basically our only hope. Recruiting outside of Hamilton looks bleak. We really dropped the ball on Pascwal Chukwu :facepalm
I trust our players and staff though. We've gotten 2 titles as underdogs (and one via pillaging the college BBall landscape :D)

i was worried ever since him and Okafor started advertising themselves as a package deal. Okafor's handlers seem to be steering him towards Duke, now Justise Winslow apparently is also in the mix. I really thought we had Jones in the bag though, I won't lie. Then we wiffed on Ulis, even though we had been focusing on him well before he had his matchup with Tyus Jones at Peach Jam. Kentucky showed up late to the party, those bastards :banghead:

Jim Boeheim's take on paying student-athletes:
"That's really the most idiotic suggestion of all time," Boeheim said. "I don't believe players should be paid. I believe they are getting a tremendous opportunity."
Not sure I agree with this. Yes, a full scholarship to (mostly) world-class institutions IS a tremendous opportunity, but he is glossing over so much more of the story. Never really liked Boeheim, always seems to be so hyperbolic. Also, are we forgetting that these "student"-athletes have him making millions? Not saying they should too, but you'd think he'd be more sensitive to the subtleties of this issue. In general, just rubbed me the wrong way...

LSU gets a commit from 2014 PG Jaylen Patterson.. only a 3 star but he is good friends with Ben Simmons. Simmons' godfather is our asst coach David Patrick (aussie connection which got us Darcy Malone). Really starting to like our chances with Ben.

Re: 2013-2014 Observation Deck
My goodness did McAdoo look terrible in the Blue-White game. I don't understand his game at all. It physically hurts me to watch him play. I have a stomachache right now because of him.
I understand that he wants to face up as that's what he will likely need to do to carve a role in the NBA, but he just can't play that way. The guy has the worst touch on a shot I have ever seen and he always seems off balanced. I swear he was going to break the backboard a few times. His handle looks slightly improved and he seems more assertive with his decisions... Unfortunately his decisions are awful ones. I think he's the most infuriating basketball player I have watched in in the Roy Williams era. Either him or Larry Drew, and that should say all I need to say. At least I knew, at most, Drew would be an average college player. McAdoo could be a great one if his game wasn't going in the wrong direction.
The freshman looked better than advertised. Isaiah Hicks seems to be everything McAdoo wants to be. He can actually handle, he has actual touch on his shots, he just looks really good... Not sure where his playing time comes from, all I know is that he needs a lot of run. Britt bringing speed back to the Carolina PG position and Meeks is a load. He will be a double digit rebounder before it's all said an done.
PJ is far and away the best player on this team. UNC will probably lose to Richmond without him. He's that good and the rest of the team is that average.
Thank God 2014 is a great class, 2015 has potential, and 2016 is lining up to be an alltimer. Last and this year is Roy paying for his California recruiting mistakes.
-

I'm guessing it's more than a little bit likely UNC lands both Harry Giles and Seventh Woods, then? Who are the other main targets in that class?
-
Re: 2013-2014 Observation Deck
Harry Giles, Jayson Tatum, and Seventh Woods right now.
There's also two elite guards in North Carolina, Junior Smith and Kwe Parker. They're likely a package deal, though, and I'm not sure how many Roy is looking at for 2016. Think they grew up together, same aau, same high school, best friends, etc. I don't know if you seen Kwe before, but he's not far behind Seventh as an athlete. Probably about the same type of bounce, just not as powerful. There's also Braxton Blackwell to keep an eye on. He's Coach Rob's nephew.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQTpbfGFwFg
Parker and JR. have crazy chemistry. I know they like UNC little, just not sure how much Roy likes them.
Recruiting Dozier should help with Seventh and Giles as all three of those are tight. Obviously Theo and Giles played together at Wesleyan as well. Not sure where we stand Seventh overall, although I heard we have a good start with Tatum. Giles is the interesting one.
Giles was looking like a generational talent before his injury. Telep said as much, you had Roy, K, and Cal using valuable recruiting time watching a freshman workout (which was unheard of), and for speculation, someone said they overheard Roy say Giles is the best freshman he has ever seen. True or not, there's a reason why he's the youngest player Roy has offered.
Naturally you have to think he's a one and done type of player. The type of player UNC has had an unbelievably difficult time recruiting ever since Harrison Barnes. Had a chance at Shabazz, Vonleh, Wiggins, Randle, and now likely Vaughn... All will probably choose another school. It's not completely on Roy or UNC (Bazz's father, Vonleh reclassified, Vaughn's connection to Kaffey), but it's still some incredible dry spell at a program like North Carolina. Especially with Shabazz, Randle, and Vaughn being Roy's #1 targets respectively in each class. Although Roy stopped recruiting Shabazz mid way. The Randle one still annoys me how we didn't even make his final cut. I know he did it out of respect for Roy not to keep him hanging. It still bothers me.
Then there's UNC's history with recruiting North Carolina kids. When was the last time UNC (not just Roy) went all in on an elite North Carolina recruit and lost? Shavlik Randolph to dook. That was like 2000, or around there. When was the last time an elite North Carolina recruit left the state of North Carolina when they were a top target for an instate school? Not Quincy Miller, not John Wall, and not Brandon Rush. Those guys either weren't recruited or were afterthought recruits for one reason or another. And Coach Smith owned the state and that was in the middle of K's peak, since we are going into the 90s. It's probably been decades.
If history follows suit, then that makes this a dook-UNC battle. Getting Theo might prove to be very beneficial in more ways than one. Also Giles is from a pro-UNC family, if that matters at all. I wouldn't get my hopes up too high, though. Plenty of time left in this recruitment and, personally, I'm just so skeptical with one and done recruits lately. That said, you probably couldn't ask for a better start for a recruit of this level.

Re: 2013-2014 Observation Deck
AJ Hammons got suspended 3 games, "conduct detrimental." Well, 2 exhibition games and our first regular season game, which is against something called Northern Kentucky. How many directional schools does KY have? It's not that big a state.
It's not academic or legal, so that's good I guess. But it probably means he's being ****ing lazy and missing classes/meetings again. Get your shit together dude, the way so much of the fanbase is convinced he's a 2 and gone 1st rounder after this year is stupid. He's got a long way to go to make an NBA roster I'm GMing, let alone get a 1st round guaranteed deal.

Why do I have a feeling CSUN going to lose the exhibition match vs Cal State LA?
Also kind of crazy that everyone seemingly has UoA wrapping up the Pac12 with UCLA and Colorado being given distant second and third respectively. Won beshoced if Colorado wins the regular season and UoA finishes third. Shit is closer than most are saying

Perhaps it's because AZ added Aaron Gordon, TJ McConnell, and Hollis Jefferson? They lost Lyons, Hill, and Jerrett, but all will be replaced by arguably better players. Combine that with improved play from Ashley, Johnson and Tarc, you see why they are highly regarded.

I like them. I haven't watched a game yet (I presume you are watching the KU scrimmage), but college basketball was getting way too physical. The last couple years I have seen plays that would get an NFL player fined and a foul would go uncalled.
How does Wiggins look?

I agree it was too physical but now it's too touchy. Maybe it was just the refs trying to set the tone for the season, but there was like 30 ft's in the first half or some shit. Wiggins looks godly, he was nervous at first but he settled and had a nasty oop and got to show off a bit of his scoring repertoire. really good hands on D as well, he's gonna get a lot of blocks and steals this year.
