Has there ever been a player in history playing as a top 3 player in his 17 season
-
Re: Has there ever been a player in history playing as a top 3 player in his 17 season
There's been several but it's not that common with someone who's played this much basketball while as a perimeter player.
Who knows maybe the less physical nature/rules of the game now will enable a lot of players to do this till well into their 30s. KG and Duncan are still playing well but not to the degree that Kobe has shown.
-
Re: Has there ever been a player in history playing as a top 3 player in his 17 season
Knee "spinning" and other medical advances will help great players continue to be great, while getting older, in the future.
Oh and obvious Kobe Stan thread.

If that's the case, then there would be a bunch of other 34 year old guards still going this strong.
Care to point me toward them to compare?

Re: Has there ever been a player in history playing as a top 3 player in his 17 season
Not really. The guy is just a hard worker. Not saying other players don't work hard, but Kobe's unique work ethic is the reason he's still playing at such a high level.
-
Re: Has there ever been a player in history playing as a top 3 player in his 17 season
Fundamentals + unique talent + work ethic = longevity
Players just don't do what he is doing in his 17th year. Not even Kareem.
-
Re: Has there ever been a player in history playing as a top 3 player in his 17 season
Lackluster record compared to the stacked team he is playing with. Not that impressed. Not to mention he always starts off hot and than cools off. Its going to happen again.

When Nash comes back he won't look as good.

37 Y.O Kareem in his 20th season (4 in college)

Kobe was not top 3 his first couple of seasons.....so throw out that 17 year top 3 nonsense.

No, but Kobe is the best to ever play the game, so it makes sense.

Kobe wasn't a top 3 player in;
1996-97
1997-98
1998-99
1999-00
2001-02
2004-05
2010-11
seasons without a doubt.
His case for being a top 3 player is arguable;
2002-03
2003-04
2011-12

Actually I think the writing skills are worse than the reading comprehension in this case. Title is missing either an "th" after 17, or an "s" after season, which makes a big difference in what that sentence is supposed to signify.

True, but I figured it was obvious what he meant given Kobe's slow start to his career

As an example of how modern medicine is extending peak and overall longevity, according to dime magazine in 1985 there were only 5 players age 35 or older. Last season, there were 29. That's six times as many.

Re: Has there ever been a player in history playing as a top 3 player in his 17 season
Another interesting note:
The reason Kobe, A-Rod, and other athletes travel to Germany for their biologic treatments involves a vague FDA regulation that mandates that all human tissues (such as blood and bone marrow) can only be "minimally manipulated," or else they are classified as a drug and subject to much stricter governmental regulations. The problem, of course, is figuring out what "minimal" means in the context of biologics.

That said, it's too early to tell how effective these procedures are:
Or maybe the injection of spun blood is just an elaborate placebo, a high-tech gimmick that tricks the brain into disbelieving the laments of the body.

Re: Has there ever been a player in history playing as a top 3 player in his 17 season
17th season doesnt matter, age does matter... Kobe turned 18 coming in to the NBA, he is now at 34... Dont give me that "wear n tear" nonsense, he would played & exercised (which is only healthy for you) basketball equally much or maybe even more even if he didnt come in to the NBA at 18...
As far as top 3 player goes, we shall see about that by the end of the season and especially the playoffs...
-
Re: Has there ever been a player in history playing as a top 3 player in his 17 season
this has been a rough year for Kobe haters. His domination this season has driven lots of them over the edge
they thought he just fade away in his old age like their fave players did, the iversons, carters, macgradys, duncans, WADE, etc, but again and again Kobe proving the doubters wrong
It's funny that Kobe haters refuse to admit his greatness. Every year they prop up some player having a career season as better than Kobe, every year that player changes and Kobe remains the measuring stick. RulerBe

Re: Has there ever been a player in history playing as a top 3 player in his 17 season
Jordan would be if he played 17 years.
The only reason Kobe has caught up with Jordan in terms of statistical records is because he has played longer than Jordan (because he came out of HS and Jordan retired for 2 years).

tmac had the best numbers by a fraction over kobe.. but its easier the shoot when there isnt as much pressure. and the magic didn't get allot of pressure due to their record

kennethgriffin, what off-season/summer do you feel Kobe was the most motivated and put the most work in towards the upcoming season?
I am thinking either the off-season after the 2001-2002 season was over or the off-season after the 2004-2005 season was over.

kobes playing better than all of these guys so far
and only guys who were better last year was durant and lebron
rondo's entire game is based on the ability of others. since he can't hit a shot on his own hes only effective if others are on
kobe on the other hand can do both score and create if others arnt knocking them down

he came in camp with 30 extra pounds of muscle
and that year was the first time you could see his range increase to 5 feet behind the three point arc
