Well being able to palm the ball is helpful, but if you can get your whole hand above the rim, then you should be able to dunk.

About 6-7 inches above the rim is average, however, remember that if you can palm the ball, you have to jump less. I never could palm the ball, so back in the day when I could dunk (I feel old) I had to jump above 4 inches higher to dunk 2 handed. Make sense?

I can get 6/7 inches from the tip of my finger down and I can easily dunk if I hold the ball in one hand and approach the rim without dribbling, but once I get in games and dribbling comes into play then I can barely get the air or the grip on the ball to throw it down.

I wish I could 2 hand dunk, but I cant:cry:

I was messing around with a volleyball on a rim today, trying to do the Dr.J thing and the skyhook, and I realized how nice it would be if the basketball fit in your hand like a volleyball.

If you can palm the ball, you don't need as much hangtime. If you can palm it, you could probably get away with four inches over the rim. If you cannot palm the ball or you want to throw down a hard slam, you have to be bare minimum six inches over the rim.

Depends if you can palm it or if we're talking 2 hand dunk etc?

Ideally half of your forearm should be above the ring.

you have to be able to reach at least 4 inches above the rim the rim to dunk to dunk a regulation size basketball (9.5' or 24.2 cm in diameter). Or 10,4". Of course that's assuming you have HUGE ass HANDS allowing you to very easily palm the ball in one hand. Otherwise you would need to get much higher if you want to have any chance of dunking.
