Did the calculation after tonight's game. Currently at 58.6 FG% while averaging 26 PPG.
LeBron has always been pretty efficient, but still crazy to see considering his age.

Yea he's shooting career highs at a few distances including at the rim.
And 3pt shooting is not a career high but still 40%...

Lakers fans are saying he’s looking his most athletic since 2020. Also epm says he’s completely carrying the team, Ad has been good but not that impactful

Pretty lame to be using FG% in 2023, but yes his TS of 67% is very good.
His problem will be playing a NBA schedule. If he only had to play twice a week he'd be fine. In that case he'd have enough time to recover somewhat. But playing so many games is going to be a struggle.

FG% tells you how frequently a player puts the ball in the basket during live plays. That's all I take from it. All you can take from it really. Gives you a quick overview of how often said player puts the ball in the hoop. But not the value of those scored baskets.
Although 60% FG has the same eFG% and TS% as 40% 3PT, the frequency of baskets made is different.
4/10 3PT = 12 points
6/10 2PT = 12 points
This is important because it influences the flow of the game. Great mid-range shooters and paint scorers make more shots compared to three-point shooters. This forces the opponent to inbound the ball more often, limiting transition and semi-transition opportunities.
The average offensive rating in the NBA after a steal or defensive rebound is 115. But the average offensive rating on all other possessions is 106. - Thinking Basketball (Dec 13, 2021)
FG%, 3PT%, 2PT%, eFG%, FT%, and TS% all have value to me and should be considered.

LeBron is actually a good example of why FG% doesn't work any more. It penalizes players for shooting 3s even if they shoot them well.
LeBron is shooting 68% on 2s but taking 3s knocks his FG% down to 59% even though he is shooting them well.
The possession battle is a different subject. 3s are more likely to be long rebounds which the team on offense has a better chance to get. Then there is the spacing issue but again that is a different subject.

Right. And by taking threes he's missing shots more frequently even if they're valuable shots to take. What we're talking about here is value vs. frequency of baskets made on live plays.

The most efficient shots are still at the rim. That never changed however 3s are obviously much better than midrange jumpers.
I think sometimes players get carried away looking for 3s, passing out of a possible layup to take a 3. The possession argument is more relevant in that case.

This is a nice post particularly the difference in ORtg. However I would love to see it just for made shot vs. missed shot. Live ball turnovers can skew these numbers quite heavily because they often lead to transition opportunities.

Yeah, I couldn't find any information on that. I'd assume the ORtg is higher on missed shots. But to what extent I wouldn't be sure.
