At 2023 NBA Summer League, the NBA is going to test a new rule where referees call technical fouls on players that the refs think have flopped.

Apparently, if the refs think the player flopped, the other team will get a free throw and the ball.

They are testing this. Sounds interesting.

The only reason the act of flopping works for players is because refs have a hard time judging how much contact or force was applied in real-time.

If they get fooled by it so often, whether it's one snapping one's neck back on contact, or falling to the ground, what makes us think the refs will be able to detect when it's a blatant flop?

If anything that decision should be made by a remote observer in headquarters watching on video and with the luxury of replays. These are not simple things to observe especially when they are looking for a hundred other things like traveling, off-ball activity, etc.

The league can get more mileage in teaching refs how to stop calling fouls for floppers than giving techs to floppers.

My only other observation on this is that it is common for older, out of-shape fans to cry "flop" as a way of toughness-posturing- to try to make themselves seem tough by desperately pleading that some 6'8 240 lb guy who fell is "soft". A LOT of the knockdowns the common goof of a fan considers a flop is not a flop; and if said fan had that happen to them, they would be on the ground wincing in pain not to mention pulling a Male Karen and pleading for security to get involved.

Want to promote skill? Take away 3s in the key and add a 4pt line

Add a scoring bonus. Ex - single player scores 5 pts in a row, they get an extra point. 10 points in a row is 3 extra points and so on.

That would promote ball hoggery and detract from team play.

I don't care, NBA was more exciting with 'ball hoggery'
