Looks like they have at least a couple roster spots to fill and could easily get rid of 3 other expiring deals if they want. I wouldn't expect much winning without Conley

So I would think Simone, Jones, and Tosacno-Anderson(if he's not cut) are fighting for the 9th/10th spots. Horton Tucker behind Sexton at the 1. Already have 4 bigs so they don't necessarily need Jones though he'll play over Udoka just because he has a player option for next year and they will want to see what they have at least going into the off season. I could see cutting Udoka and Bolmaro now too. They could probably actually use Toscano-Anderson. They've had all bigs and guards and not much as far as wings. He's listed as a 3/4/5. Rebounds ok for a guy his size. Good passer which should fit in nicely. Like many shooting is his issue. Might help their D? Sign a vet pg and some wings I'd say

It looks like the trade was all about cap space for the summer. If they get a first rounder out of it that is a bonus. With the ca[ space and picks Ainge will be in the middle of whatever happens come the off season for sure. I sure hope he's having fun again?

LA Lakers: With all the moves made, the Lakers will surely move in opposite standing directions from the Jazz.

unless Davis and Lebron are sidelined which is likely. That is their real problem not the rest of the roster

Whatever happens, the Jazz are in a good position to maximize their draft capital this season. While even a 20% chance at getting Victor Wembanyama or Scoot Henderson is a long shot, that’s still a very real path for the Jazz to get their missing superstar of the future. If that happens, they potentially have two stars locked up for around $30 million for a few years, with oodles of cap space and a war chest of assets to trade for another star. It would open a very unique window of opportunity to compete right away.

a rookie isn't making you competitive riight away

I’m well aware of the risk of sounding like a fool when criticizing any trade Danny Ainge makes, but I’m taking it anyway. Is the first really the best he could do? Maybe Ainge just felt sorry for the league after receiving essentially seven first-round picks in exchange for Rudy Gobert. But let’s be honest, if he had sympathy, he’d probably have stopped fleecing teams a while ago.

I think he got exactly what he wanted. He will be in the middle of everything that happens this summer with cap space and picks

A mix between Joe Ingles and Georges Niang, but maybe even a little more athletic.

if he's anywhere near as good as Niang he'll be something. He's not young though so right now it looks like he'll be headed back to Europe within the year

Where Clarkson employs guile and a deep bag of tricks once he gets inside the lane, Sexton instead pounds his way in, using his muscular build to simply power from point A to point B. That’s especially true in halfcourt, which helps explain his elite-for-a-guard free throw ratio (.438 FTAs per every FGA). Among ball handling guards, only superstard James Harden, Damian Lillard, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander have higher rates.

a lot I like about him more than Mitchell. This is another area. Donovon avoided contact. He's gotten better

You can start to see why the Jazz are excited. Someone who can get into the paint at will, finish well, draw contact AND punish sagging defenses with the shot is a pretty lethal weapon. If the Jazz can combine that — and herein lies the big “if” with Collin Sexton — with better court awareness and passing, then suddenly you have something pretty exciting.

already looked like a much better pg than Mitchell ever has been when Conley was out earlier in the year

There are some encouraging signs early on. For example, looking at where Walker Kessler is in this still, it’s actually somewhat surprising that this action directly leads to an alley-oop for the big man. It hasn’t been uncommon for Sexton in a situation like this to put his head down and focus on beating the switch. Instead, he actually pauses here for a beat to let the play develop. That patience gives Kessler time to finish the cut down to where a smaller Raptor has no chance of affecting his shot.

thank you for your service Mike Conley! Mitchell never did figure it out

Similar to Jones, JTA was one of the few wing-sized players on the roster and still couldn’t find time on the Lakers despite their desperate need for wings. Injuries played a small role in him not being available but he failed to make an impact even when he was.

https://saltcityhoops.com/hardys-charge-includes-maximizing-player-superpowers/

Kryptonite: His kryptonite is his lack of control, which can make it challenging for him to keep in position, avoid jumping at pump fakes, and staying out of foul trouble. In fact, you may likely see him concurrently improve as a defender while seeing a reduction in total blocks and blocks per game. And it wouldn’t be a bad thing! Because it will mean he is playing more under control and focused on containment, rather than swatting a guy out of the gym.

I'd say it's almost a certainty that he blocks less shots as he becomes better. There's a reason Gobert only led in blocks once. You can be Whiteside and rack up blocks or you can be great and keep the other team from scoring

Superpower: JC is one of the most unique players in the NBA, though he isn’t often discussed that way. Jordan leads the league in 4 point plays and fouls on three point attempts. He can hit shots in big ways and at big times. He’s an incredibly skilled isolation player. And yet none of these things identifies his true superpower, in this writer’s opinion.

why anyone would foul him in stead of letting him throw up a prayer is beyond me

Kryptonite: JC still falls to his age-old weakness of getting too focused on his own shot. When he forgets himself and uses his ability for others, we see something amazing from Clarkson.

where to even start. Prayers, bricks, pounding the rock, throwing the ball away. **** him really!

Not many foresaw Walker Kessler being this good this fast. For much of the public, he was almost an afterthought in the Gobert trade. But, he’s emerged as a big piece to Utah’s future, someone the Jazz are counting on as they forge ahead in their rebuild. And the development is there. It’s clear Kessler is a significantly better player now than he was at the beginning of the season. “As far as a ceiling goes, I don’t really see one for Walker,” Jazz head coach Will Hardy told The Athletic. (https://theathletic.com/4218669/2023/02/17/walker-kessler-jazz-all-star/?source=nbatw) “There’s nothing right now that hits me in the face as a big limitation. We’re very proud of Walker and the way he’s conducted himself. He’s started small. He’s maximized his opportunities as they have come. He’s incredibly coachable and competitive. He comes to the gym every day with a real care factor. And he loves being a part of this team.”
– via Tony Jones @ The Athletic (https://theathletic.com/4218669/2023/02/17/walker-kessler-jazz-all-star/?source=nbatw)

For Kessler, All-Star Weekend is about fun, about embracing what he’s been able to accomplish to this point. And at this point, he’s far away from that NCAA Tournament game. “For me, I didn’t have the expectation of being in the Rising Stars,” Kessler said. “So to be recognized in that way is really cool. There are a lot of young and talented guys. So, I’m really looking forward to playing as well as I can and trying to do what I can to impact the game. And I want to learn as much as I can in the process.” (https://theathletic.com/4218669/2023/02/17/walker-kessler-jazz-all-star/?source=nbatw)
– via Tony Jones @ The Athletic (https://theathletic.com/4218669/2023/02/17/walker-kessler-jazz-all-star/?source=nbatw)

“That was one of the most difficult moments of my career,” Kessler told The Athletic in a one-on-one interview. “Playing against Miami, I got into foul trouble. Nothing went right. I don’t think I’ve ever played that poorly. And it was a loss that stuck with me, because it wasn’t until the NBA preseason that I basically played another game. “But, that was a big moment of growth for me. I had to learn how to cope with defeat and failure. I never ended a season like that. But, as a perfectionist, I had to understand that one game doesn’t define who you are. I had to mature from it.” (https://theathletic.com/4218669/2023/02/17/walker-kessler-jazz-all-star/?source=nbatw)

“We’ll see where it goes from here. I miss the Jazz. I don’t need a job — I [just] miss the Jazz,” Malone said. “Where I grew up, where I’m from, respect is huge to me. He loathes hearing criticisms of the state — whether it be that it’s not sufficiently cosmopolitan to attract modern NBA players, or that it has a problem with racism, given criticisms from both outsiders such as Vernon Maxwell (ironically, now close friends with Malone) or from those like Donovan Mitchell, who spent five years playing here. “The people of Utah have been amazing to me. It does hurt when negative things are said about Utah, because I know what kind of place it is. It’s special to me,” Malone said. “We all can do better, but this is a special place to me. The people here have supported us and everything we’ve done here in this community.” (https://www.sltrib.com/sports/jazz/2023/02/20/karl-malone-his-relationship-with/)

This could be an opportunity to promote Micah Potter and Johnny Juzang from their two-way contracts, but that would be more feasible if either guy had made himself indispensable to this point in the season. Potter has spent just 14 total minutes on an NBA court this season, and Juzang has yet to appear for the Jazz. Obviously the Jazz have had a close eye on their development and minutes with the Stars, but the fact that they haven’t turned to them for practically any minutes through 60 games hints that they might not be prime candidates for regular roster roles.

I'd say if they'd been great with the Stars you could promote them. They haven't been. Jackson has

But the other clear advantage the Jazz have if they want to use these roster spots to give in-demand prospects a reason to sign with them is that they still have some of their midlevel exception left. They can’t use all $7 million remaining without crossing the tax line, but they could divvy up $3 to 4 million (depending on the exact amount of Westbrook’s buyout) between two or three players who might give the Jazz some option years in exchange for more guaranteed money up front.

losing games should come first

The Jazz could call that same player and offer a half million, or a couple million, or even more for just 22 games worth of work. But in exchange they’d likely want some options on the back end. The Spurs did something similar with Charles Bassey’s rest-of-season (ROS) contract last week. The Celtics did so with Sam Hauser last season and now have a borderline rotation player because of the low-cost gamble.

RJ Hampton

https://www.slcdunk.com/2023/2/21/23609731/utah-jazz-sign-frank-jackson-and-kris-dunn

Jackson has been having a fantastic season for the Salt Lake City Stars and is an easy move to make sure the Jazz hit their roster minimum of players. Jackson has bounced around the league but has put up good numbers and if he plays well, there’s no reason he can’t possibly make the roster next year.

No reason except Sexton, Horton-Tucker, 3 1sts and 60 million in cap space. Doubtful he's on the team next year

Dunn has also bounced around the league not able to find a home. The 5th overall pick looked like a defensive monster coming out of college but just never found a situation that he could develop properly. He’s also regularly struggled with injury. It’s a zero-risk move for a Jazz team that likely isn’t worried about racking up losses to finish the season. Is there a chance that one of these two players can be a reclamation project? Dunn is 28 while Jackson is 24, so it’s not out of the question that one of them could find a new home, albeit unlikely. Whatever happens, it should be interesting to see how these players get incorporated into the team.

like most guys that can't find their spot in the league he can't shoot

Fighting for a spot on the team to end the year, Kris Dunn — the No. 5 pick in the 2016 draft — is making the most of his opportunity. Dunn signed a 10-day contract with the Jazz this week and had to adapt to coach Will Hardy’s system and playbook — and the playstyle and tendencies of his new teammates — in a period of days. He looked like he’d been with the Jazz the whole season on Saturday night, posting a statline of 15 points, eight assists and seven rebounds while helping captain Utah’s second unit. “Kris played with a ton of confidence tonight. 13 field goal attempts and I thought they were all good ones. He did a great job bringing the ball up the floor did a good job attacking off the dribble,” Jazz coach WIll Hardy said (https://www.deseret.com/2023/2/26/23614065/analysis-utah-jazz-win-vs-san-antonio-spurs-kris-dunn).

Barcelona has already reached an agreement with Leandro Bolmaro for him to return to Barça, where he played from 2018 to 2021, (https://encestando.es/el-barcelona-ata-el-regreso-de-bolmaro/) according to sources. The Argentine guard went to the NBA after being drafted by the Knicks in 2020, although his team was finally the Minnesota Timberwolves. He hardly had any minutes there, nor did he later in his next franchise, Utah Jazz, who decided a few days ago to cut his contract.

Markkanen can be an upper-level No. 2 player on this team but the Jazz need to find a superstar and that might come by landing a top pick.

he's looking more and more like he could be the guy. Need to find guys that fit around him. Sexton has put up star type numbers in the league already himself as well. Kessler, Ochai...

The draft does seem to be the way that the Jazz are going to build but they are expected to have around $60 million in cap space. However, building a title through free agency is tough.

the 60 million and picks puts Ainge in position to be in the middle of anything that happens. If Beal or whoever becomes available they could make a move

Building through the draft, plus using these picks as leverage in trades, is going to be the best chance that the Jazz have to win its first NBA title in franchise history.

won't matter if Hardy chooses to play guys like Clarkson

they'd be in the thick of things right now if they had Gobert. They lack D and rebounding and no matter what anyone says Kessler isn't Gobert. He could be but he isn't

Raw number increases speak more loudly. But the usage jump — from 19.5% last year, to 23.6% over the first part of this season, to now 28.1% over his last 26 games — is significant. The Jazz are adjusting to life without Mike Conley’s pick-and-roll wizardry, and Jordan Clarkson has entered his annual winter shooting funk, so Markkanen has existed more as a pure #1 option in recent weeks. Usage in the 28-plus realm is superstar territory, and Markkanen has managed to climb his way into that stratosphere without sacrificing per-shot efficiency at all.

the winter funk that goes 24-7 365 you mean?

Nobody foresaw this sharp a turn in the Finn’s career trendline, but they clearly believed he was capable of more than he was tasked with in Chicago and Cleveland. In fact, at least part of the logic behind last fall’s Bojan Bogdanovic-for-Kelly Olynyk trade was that it would create opportunities for Markkanen to push the envelope on his personal development. However you feel about that trade in a vacuum, it’s hard to deny that it also gave Markkanen some head room he might not have had with Bogey still on the roster.

I thought with Kessler and Udoka they needed a vet center, Bojan wasn't a great fit for this team. He can score and shoot. Little else.

Now that Walker Kessler has played 25 games as a starter, I was interested to see how some of his metrics are holding up against top-flight opposition. His defensive rating went from 107.0 as a reserve to 116.1 in the starting five — 9.1 points worse per 100 possessions. On the bright side, his DRtg since All-Star is a stingy 94.9, but he can’t play all his games against the Spurs and the Thunder.

a long ways from Gobert still

On the other hand, Frank Jackson has yet to log a Jazz minute, and Utah still does have one other roster spot it can fill if it chooses to. In the short term they have chosen to prioritize some ball handling, with Sexton ailing, but I still wouldn’t be surprised to see them take a longer-term shot, using their remaining MLE to sign a prospect to a longer deal with some team options and guarantee triggers. Several overseas leagues are still ongoing, so it’s possible that they’re stalling to see if someone they like wants to jump on a plane before the NBA season is done.

They're under the tax so I imagine they'll end up with at least 15. Might be waiting for more buyouts as they continue today. Dunn will get at least 1 more 10 day. Frank might too with Sexton out. I'd be looking wing though. They have bigs and guards

https://www.deseret.com/2023/2/28/23616790/utah-jazz-analysis-johnny-juzang-simone-fontecchio-kris-dunn

Right now, with the lack of time he’s spent with the Jazz this season, the bad wrist sprain that kept him sidelined for more than a month, and the way that this roster is constructed, I could see the Jazz keeping him on a two-way contract for another season if he’s amenable to that situation.

we'll see. They need wings. Had his moments with the Stars but they will look to upgrade there I'm sure

The Jazz are probably going to have some injuries and some more guys that are taking some days off through the final 20 games of the season, so it would be nice if Juzang could get a little more run with the Jazz just to get a little more data on him. But, if this is all we know, I think it’s definitely worth keeping him in the development program.

we know quite a bit. Only Frank Jackson looked great with the Stars. You'd be better off keeping him on a two way if possible

I feel like Fontecchio just needs some regular minutes and needs just one good night to kind of break out of the rut he’s in. I’m glad that the Jazz have him under contract through next season because I still think he has a good chance of being a useful role player.

unlikely it will be with the Jazz past next year. They have two many picks and cap space not to be moving most of this roster eventually

I think that the Jazz are going to have to decide whether Dunn is actually too good to be on the team this season. If they are looking to lose games and improve their lottery odds, Dunn actually might lose out on being signed for the rest of the season.

probably won't be playing once Sexton is back. Need a vet. He's it

As noted above, Atlanta was one of the teams trying to acquire Jae Crowder. (https://*********.com/2023/03/02/nba-rumors-jae-crowder-trade-suns-nets-bucks-free-agency/) The Hawks, Rockets, and Suns had exploratory discussions on a three-team trade. In that scenario, John Collins would’ve landed with the Rockets, Eric Gordon and KJ Martin with the Suns, and Crowder and Landry Shamet with the Hawks, but nothing of substance materialized, league sources told *********. Atlanta also tried to acquire Crowder in three-team trade talks with Utah and Phoenix centered around Collins going to Utah, Jarred Vanderbilt and Malik Beasley going to Phoenix, and Crowder and Shamet going to Atlanta. Among the reasons this scenario didn’t materialize was a disagreement in draft pick compensation that would’ve gone to Utah in the talks.

Jazz 2023 Free Agency: 4 Targets (msn.com) (https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nba/jazz-2023-free-agency-4-targets/ar-AA188RWB?rc=1&ocid=winp1taskbar&cvid=ee72c27dde57408baee31b1eb5e10e15&ei=13)

The Raptors starting point guard will hit the market as one of the most coveted free agents while playing a position that is arguably Utah’s biggest position of need. The seven-year veteran is averaging 19.4 ppg on 39% shooting from long distance this year.

Their biggest need is the wing easily. They mostly have guards and bigs. They aren't going anywhere with Lauri at the 3. Sexton is really good. Clarkson needs to go. Not convinced Agbaji is anything more than a role player at best but they need someone alongside him regardless. Simone won't be around past next years buy outs. Zuzang and Toscano won't be back next year

Reid will be another player in high demand in a weak free-agent class. Not only would Utah need to pony up starter money, but also provide a situation that requires a bigger role than what he’s been accustomed to in Minnesota.

he'd be behind Lauri and Kessler. Next

According to Spotrac.com, Grant could get up to a four-year, $172M extension if he leaves Portland. That’s a chunk of Utah’s cap space, but a frontcourt of Grant, Kessler, and Markkanen would be one of the best in the business.

He's got some flexibilty. Not sure he's the best fit either though

The future contract is going to be in the neighborhood of $18-20M per year, which feels pretty steep considering Collin Sexton and Ochai Agbaji are already on the roster. It’s rumored that Jazz owner Ryan Smith wants Clarkson back, but from this point of view, it feels like a coin flip.

let's hope Ainge is really running things. Can't believe he loves the bum

Another skill on the defensive end to develop is extending his defense out of the paint. If Kessler could switch to different matchups, it would create a different dynamic for Utah’s defense. In recent years, opposing teams drew Rudy Gobert to the perimeter due to his inability to guard outside the paint.

they drew him out so they could get to the rim. Gobert guarding the perimeter wasn't the problem. Problem was He can't guard the rim at the same time and no one else could or would help

The question is, who will be the point guard for the Jazz in the future? The Jazz are going to eventually have to answer that question either in free agency, through a trade or through the draft.

they have a 23 year old who has put up all star numbers already in his career :facepalm

Clarkson has excelled in his leadership and his playmaking this season, but he’s at his best when he is running and gunning and we all know that. Sexton, while uniquely gifted in his ability to put pressure on the rim, is not a natural facilitator.

put up 6 assists a game when starting. Not sure what you expect but he's already shown better pg skills than Mitchell ever did. The game will slow down for him and he'll just get better

It’s probably going to be a little rough watching the Jazz from that perspective for the rest of this season (the Mike Conley void is vast and empty), but at least the Jazz have an obvious need. There’s no guesswork to be done here. They need a point guard.

Maybe my view is clouded because I’ve spent the last three years watching backup centers like Hassan Whiteside, Udoka Azubuike, aged Derrick Favors and Tony Bradley and have forgotten what it’s like to see a legitimate replacement-level center on a regular basis. Maybe Jones just looks good compared to what I’m used to at this point.

Whiteside sucks but not sure why we need to say shit about the others who have all done more in the NBA and the Jazz than Jones

But, maybe he’s actually good. He’s got a $2.5 million player option for next season and if he decides to stay with the Jazz rather than test the open market, I think that would be really good for the Jazz’s future.

doubt he's giving up the money. Might be out of the league if he does

I have two competing thoughts when it comes to Talen Horton-Tucker as a point guard. My first thought is that I understand the appeal with Horton-Tucker’s wingspan and his potential on defense as well as his ability to pressure the rim and beat his man off the dribble. But, it just doesn’t seem like he is a quick enough decision maker or that he reads the defense in the way that a point guard needs to. In short, I don’t think that he should be playing point, despite the appeal.

I'd guess he won't be playing it once Sexton returns. Dunn is one of their best players sadly

The competing thought though, is that Horton-Tucker is in a tough spot positionally in the NBA. Where does he play if not at point guard? He’s not a shooting guard or enough of a threat from deep to play out on the wing with regularity, and he’s not big enough (6-foot-4) to play deeper into the frontcourt. His chance of having staying power in the NBA is at the point.

with his size and length he could be a small ball center. That might be where he has the best chance of success

For Kris Dunn, the most important day of 2023 could be March 14. That’s the day Dunn’s second and final 10-day contract with the Utah Jazz will expire and the Jazz will have to make a decision — move forward with Dunn, or let him walk. “No matter what happens I’m very appreciative of the Jazz organization for giving me this opportunity to showcase my game,” Dunn said. “I feel like I’ve been doing a good job.” (https://www.deseret.com/2023/3/8/23624080/utah-jazz-kris-dunn-nba-journey-long-term-deal)

“It’s been a beautiful, ugly journey,” Dunn said. “I’ve learned a lot through my experience and that’s the beautiful thing. … And then there’s the ugly parts. I’ve been through the G League, I’ve been waived, I’ve been traded, I’ve had injuries, (https://www.deseret.com/2023/3/8/23624080/utah-jazz-kris-dunn-nba-journey-long-term-deal) so I’ve seen what the league as a business is about and throughout it I’ve come to understand that it is a business and how to be a pro, on and off the court.”

“He came in with a tremendous competitive fire,” Jazz coach Will Hardy said. “You see that on the defensive end of the floor. He really is engaged on that end. (https://www.deseret.com/2023/3/8/23624080/utah-jazz-kris-dunn-nba-journey-long-term-deal) That part, he came in with. He’s getting more and more comfortable on the offensive end, understanding our system, where his opportunities to score are, what the reads are that he has to make as a primary ballhandler to get his teammates involved, and I think he’s done a better job every game.”

What did you want to establish with Trae going forward? I haven’t had a specific agenda. That’s why I felt like being thrown into it with all the guys — with D.J. (Dejounte Murray), with Hunt (De’Andre Hunter), with Trae, you kind of go down the line — just being together and being around each other, those windows that you feel, those things that you think are important, present themselves, (https://theathletic.com/4300281/2023/03/13/quin-snyder-exclusive-interview-trae-young/) and then you can talk about them. Whatever that might be. Rather than kind of having a list of things. Let’s experience it first. Let me get to know them, them get to know me, and to the extent that everybody gives each other the benefit of the doubt on trust, until that gets violated in some way — and maybe it will, even unknowingly. But even that is an experience, if you’re transparent about everything, that can help you grow as a team, and grow as a coach.

He has the tools to be a versatile player, but on a team that was in win-now mode, Brantley didn’t get much playing time.

more to do with a coach that refused to make adjustments. If he'd played Brantley or Tucker just 5 minutes on Jamal Murray instead of Clarkson and Mitchell they win that series

Playing for the New Zealand Breakers of the Australia-based NBL this season, Brantley has averaged 15.7 points, 6 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.5 steals in 28.7 minutes per contest over 39 games (all starts).

How’s life in Utah? Ochai Agbaji: It’s great. I think Utah has the best fans in the NBA. They show up, no matter if it’s a Monday night or Wednesday night. They’re there, and it seems like it’s sold out every night, loud, packed, and they’re supporting us, no matter what, whether we have new players in or players got traded away. (https://*********.com/lists/utah-jazz-ochai-agbaji-trades-tanking-lauri-markkanen-will-hardy-danny-ainge/) They’re still there to support us no matter what. It’s all love that you feel, for sure.

have you had one on Monday? Jazz don't usually play home games on Sunday or Monday. It's why they usually have a tougher schedule than everyone else

Will the Utah Jazz look for a point guard in the upcoming NBA draft?

I'm sure Ainge will go for BPA but with Sexton, Lauri, Kessler and Agbaji wings seem like where they need to look first

The reality is this offseason has a chance to be a very active one for the Jazz. With three draft picks and a large amount of cap space, the Jazz are bound to be an active team. Will they look to find a big player in free agency to pair with Markkanen? Will they find a way to trade for a player into their cap space? Will they use their cap space to help another team shed contracts for draft picks? There are a ton of options for the Jazz, but one thing you can count on is the Jazz will be looking for a point guard this offseason to pair with Ochai Agbaji, Lauri Markkanen, and Walker Kessler.

I'd think a vet pg is more of a need

Brantley is coming off an incredible season playing in Australia’s NBL where he shot 40% from deep and averaged 16.4 points and five rebounds per game. It’s clear that he has gotten better and it’s good to see him at least having the chance to once again audition for a chance in the NBA.

Conversely, Talen Horton-Tucker also struggled a bit, going 7-of-18 overall, 2-of-7 from 3-point range, and finished with just 16 points because he took four free throws and missed all of them.

that's good shooting from him. Dunn should be starting until Sexton comes back

Brantley believes that he is ready for an NBA team to give him a chance but he didn’t seem bitter about the Jazz not taking that chance on him. The Breakers are going to want Brantley back, so if an NBA team doesn’t come calling, he’ll still be playing basketball.

not much doubt from the get go. He was all Gleague which puts him on the fringe already

Few know that Moneke’s path could have been completely different over the last year. The previous summer, he signed a deal with the Kings but had an opportunity to choose between three NBA teams. “It was Utah Jazz and Minnesota Timberwolves,” Moneke revealed the other two options besides Sacramento (https://basketnews.com/news-187440-chima-moneke-reveals-nba-clubs-he-couldve-joined-eyes-vezenkov-in-kings.html).

His stint with the Kings included just two appearances and eight NBA minutes, but the Nigerian NT member does not regret his decision to land in California. “I think it worked out the way it was supposed to. Obviously, everything would be different, I probably wouldn’t be here,” Moneke told BasketNews. “Maybe it would have been worse, maybe it would have been better. I don’t know, I cannot control that. But I am happy with the connections I made and the experience I had. I am also happy to be here in Monaco. No regrets. “Situation is very important,” he continued about the biggest lesson he learned in the NBA environment. “Situation is very, very important. Some people struggle on certain teams not because they are not good players but because they are in the wrong situation. (https://basketnews.com/news-187440-chima-moneke-reveals-nba-clubs-he-couldve-joined-eyes-vezenkov-in-kings.html) It’s very important to play for a coach, play on a team that believes in you, and will give you opportunities to play the way you wanna play.”

https://saltcityhoops.com/how-the-nbas-new-pact-with-players-could-impact-the-jazz/

Who won/lost: It’s honestly shocking that the players agreed to this. The union is generally against any proposals that limit earning opportunities for players, and this will most certainly do that. For example, Jazz alumnus Joe Ingles joined Milwaukee last summer for $6.5 million, a deal he couldn’t sign under the new rule. Now, a player in Ingles’ shoes will have to choose between getting exception money from a team with lower team salary — meaning potentially not as strong a contender — or take a minimum-salary deal from the Bucks.

I thought Inlges was a minimum guy anyway

Had they been able to go up to $18.7M on a starting salary offer (that’s 40% over his current salary), would that have been enough to get his signature on a piece of paper? Maybe. The Jazz also have to analyze what Clarkson’s role is on a future contending team and pay him with that framework in mind. Is he the fifth best player on a hypothetical 2025-26 contender? Or the seventh best? Or, at 33 by then, will his production be replaceable in other ways? At any rate, it’s moot for now because he doesn’t seem inclined to accept the $16 million, and the bump in allowable extension amounts will kick in too late for him.

he needs to go. Agbagi is their starting two

Who won/lost: The players probably viewed this as a small win because it creates 30 more NBA jobs. In actuality, it might make teams less likely to call up a player on a prorated NBA salary or reward a late second-rounder with a full NBA deal. Because of that, I think this one will ultimately benefit owners more than players, especially since a young player who “pops” on a 2-way deal is still subject to restricted free agency.

gets them closer to a real minor league

Jazz impact: You could argue that this makes it a recruiting disadvantage for the Jazz to exist in a jurisdiction where recreational marijuana purchases are still not legal… but honestly, in year of our 2023, it’s probably slightly naive to think that players (or people) can’t find what they are looking for.

it is legal medically here

When Luka Samanic checked in on Wednesday, he became the 299th player in Utah Jazz history to take to the hardwood, the intrepid Ken Clayton reported (https://twitter.com/k_clayt/status/1641235757510832130?s=20). Ken and I have wondered all season if the Jazz would make it to 300 in the Utah era, but unless they sign someone with the season winding down, this might be one milestone that has to wait until 2023-24.

I can't imagine they wouldn't fill those spots going into the off season. They are valuable as trade filler, summer league/camp bodies etc.

interesting that he got guaranteed money and Dunn didn't. I guess their age difference. Still have a roster spot to fill. I was thinking Juzang might get a regular non guaranteed deal and they'd sign another guy to a two way

Jones currently holds a player option worth about $2.6 million. If he opts out, the Jazz should act quickly to bring him back. Utah should be able to sign him to a team-friendly deal since he could have a larger role with Utah in a rebuilding phase.

doubt he opts out of guaranteed money. They probably hope he does though. He wouldn't be resigned

With a player option this offseason, Clarkson could be looking for one more big contract before he calls it a career. The Jazz have his Bird Rights, so they could offer Clarkson a larger contract than other teams. Also, on a roster full of young players, Clarkson’s presence as a leader stands out, only adding to the logic behind re-signing him this offseason.

hard to imagine he'll beback with Agbaji's development. Be sad if he is. Ainge has to be smarter no?

The problem is that Horton-Tucker, who is making $10.3 million this season, might require a big raise to stay in Utah. If the front office believes he could be part of the team’s long-term plans, the Jazz could offer him more money than what his averages indicate he is worth.

they got to be hoping he opts out. Might be out of the league if he does

At point guard, Utah appears to be choosing between Collin Sexton, Talen Horton-Tucker, and Kris Dunn.

no it doesn't :facepalm

At shooting guard, the Jazz may be choosing between Clarkson and Ochai Agbaji.

let's hope so. See ya Bum! :lol

The solution — looking at the strengths and weaknesses of these players — seems to be to have Dunn starting at point guard, with Sexton starting at shooting guard.

they pay you for this analysis? Dunn is the vet unless they upgrade. Sexton is the starting 1 unless they find an upgrade. They may look to get another playmaker next to him with size

Due his streakiness beyond the arc and unreliable defense, Clarkson should come off the bench, attacking second unit defenses and making it difficult for opposing stars to get any rest.

going to pay him big bucks for this?

Not to be forgotten is THT, whose physique and play style may allow him to thrive in the second unit behind starting forward Lauri Markkanen.

let's not foget Talen wasn't in the rotation until trades and injuries put him there. He is still a project

To be fair though, with both Clarkson and Horton-Tucker potentially leaving as free agents this offseason, the question might just answer itself.

the picks and cap space will answer it. Could be mostly a different team in a couple months. Lauri, Kessler, Agbaji, Sexton...
