View Full Version : What moves are players doing today that weren't being done 30 years ago?

The step side or whatever the hell it's being called is one i don't think i've seen back then. Players were doing step backs but i don't think i've ever seen any one step to the side and do it like harden. Maybe because it would of been a travel.

Anything else? Sure there's a bunch i just can't think of any.

That was expected although it was being done just not nearly enough. Anything that players weren't doing that they're doing now?

2:45 min is a massive carry by tatum (and clarkson after him) and this kind of thing is being done in the NBA on a regular basis now

Nah they did plenty of that...and traveling too back then. Difference was only a small group of guys were allowed to do it back then, vs everyone being allowed now.

6'9" Lebron was comically doing post moves on shrimp Caruso, instead of just DROP-STEPPING ON THE SMALLER PLAYER, LIKE THIS:

that's pathetic, but it's accepted now due to how highly "skilled" they are ( can't dribble the ball without carrying )

since this is the most skilled era ever tho I mean ya know I mean ya know

I watched the 88 bulls lakers game yesterday....

Magic often would change his pivot.

MJ front rimmed a dunk

Kareem got scored on 3 straight times by Bill cartwright

No one was super human

Flexing after uncontested dunks and touch fouls in the key. Yelling "and one" everytime they finish in traffic.
Excessive and stupid handshaking rituals and bench-jerks celebrating every made basket.

Yeah i've noticed that also. His pivot foot moves off the spot alot. It's often barely noticeable at first glance but he does do it.

Othet players have done it but you don't see alot of guys banging on guys off of the hop step. I'm sure vince must of done it.

Not really a move but your right. It's annoying as yell. All the kids mini leagues and school leagues do it now also.

The zero step, or gather step wasn't allowed and was considered traveling. This is why you don't see side steps, backs steps, and 3 step layups they do today back then.
The closest thing was the pro hop, which for a long time was considered traveling too. The sky hook and finger roll are two things you rarely see in todays game.

I've seen guys do step backs in mj's era but i don't recall anyone doing the sidestep one with the zero step. That definitely would of been traveling.

Surprised nobody does the sky hook. It's so effective. I think i remember kareem talking about nobody doing it because it wasn't sexy looking

Step-back before, even up to kobe/tmac era, was a hard plant of the foot after the last dribble, then one-step back. Stepback today seem to allow many steps back.

Yeah they definitely allow for an extra dribble or 2 on the step back now.

clear travel.

U think a hop step is a travel? It's interesting because even refs have different takes on the hop step. Some call it some don't. With the gather step allowed now it wouldn't be a travel. I'm not so sure about back then.

think Parker + Navarro(Spanish guy) has started this
you can say same about chase down blocks aswell
one more is Rondo behind the back fake

the rules for travel get more and more lenient every generation.

when i was playing, old farts were already calling out our travels and we were defiant with those accusations.

now i am doing the same to the young kids and they are just as defiant. :oldlol:

The problem with this is that it creates the illusion that previous generations had far worse balhandlers than there are now. Sure in general, today's are better, but it is more of the rules than just plain "evolution".
