View Full Version : triangle offense needed THE goat post presence (Wilt & MJ), so why Phil get credit?

the historical record shows that players liked him because he didn't yell like PJ Carlisimo, Bob Knight or Geroge Karl, but he was taught the triangle from Tex Winters and wasn't much of an X's and O's genius.

And yes we know that 35-year old MJ didn't have time start over and build another rookie team or otherwise unsuccessful offense into a champion, so it's irrelevant that he retired in 98' rather than start from scratch somewhere else.

So Phil is just lucky to come along at the right time and coach the goat post presences that made his otherwise wildly unsuccessful offense a champion... What if he had a Westbrooker like Luka or Lebron instead of a post god like MJ?... The triangle wouidn't be run and Phil would be fired pretty quickly.

The triangle only had a max capacity of 3-peat while a team oriented Bill Russell ball had a max capacity of an 8-peat

We're on the same page here - the triangle sucked and was nothing without literally the goat post presences in history - it needed the most dominant centers ever (Wilt/Shaq), or it needed the GOAT MJ to invent big man footwork for guards and his clone to copy it (kobe).

The reality is that the triangle doesn't win with just Shaq and Penny or something.. It needs MJ or his clone to have the quick-bailout capability without dominating the ball, which is the big man footwork and elite jumpshooting skill for guards that MJ pioneered and Kobe coped.

Who got mj to buy in

Dean Smith

So Phil already had a coachable player with great fundamentals (off-balll, jumpshooting form, post foundation) that could execute his triangle.. If MJ came straight from high school and was just an spotty-shooting, AAU ball-dominator, then the triangle couldn't be run.
