View Full Version : If you placed Ben Wallace in the 1960's he would be top ten or 15 all-time nowadays

What are your personal thoughts on this.

As many people have said that Ben Wallace is similar to Russell besides the fact that he played in a stronger era and was on a less stacked team then the 1960 Celtics.

Not necessarily.

Russell was a really fluid athlete. A standout track star if I recall correctly. Better at running the break as well as hunting chasedown blocks. Not super nifty on offense but probably better than Wallace, just wasnt asked to do much bc of the composition of the team. Wallace is a hideous offensive player.

The other thing too is, bigs were not exactly a strength of the league at the time Wallace ‘reigned.’ He got ragdolled by Shaq in a finals which was spoiled by Chuckbe, and then Timmy averaged 14 boards to win FMVP the next year. Who exactly was Wallace known for shutting down? Jermaine Oneal??

Tbh he kinda reminds me of Boston Perkins. Seems like a key piece when the team is winning and dominating defensively, soon as they go elsewhere it’s clear they pretty much suck.

Wallace is pretty overrated IMO. Pistons did more for him than he did for them. In my opinion.

he'd be bill russell with 20 lbs of extra muscle in the horrific 60s.

He'd be a brick layer or working in construction.

Wilt must have had some horrendous competition if you think Ben fkn Wallace would be a top 10 player alltime if he played in the 60s.

It's hard to evaluate Ben Wallace on how important he was to Pistons success. I would say in 2004 he was the best defensive player as he held teams to 90 ORTG when he was on but he also had great defensive players in Billups\Rasheed next to him. While Rasheed was the one who was mostly responsible for shutting down Duncan in 2005 finals but they lost anyway. Take away 2004\2005 seasons and nobody remembers anything those pistons ever did in the playoffs, they were a treadmill playoff team after Larry Brown left. I take Draymond Green over Ben Wallace quite easily, he's a much better passer\shooter and can switch on guards better in this era.

In the 1960s, i can see Ben Wallace as a worse scoring Nate Thurmond.

Nah basketball and sports in general are 70% mental and russell is know to be one of if not the most cerebral players ever. I've never heard of ben being described this way.

Top 10? Ridiculous...If you placed Ben Wallace in the 1960's, he would be on the $100 bill. There'd be a 5000ft marble statue of him replacing Central Park where he's reaching for the Heavens as he ushers humanity into the Space Age purely from the hope and optimism generated by his preternatural athletic feats.

I've argued with the lebron steroid thing before but ben wallace does have a bit of the roid look. I'm on the fence with him. Either way he would have access to the supplements and training knowledge so he definitely wouldn't be as big and strong
