View Full Version : Communist Heroes of the Past: Thomas Sankara

Been reading about this hero on Wikipedia, and I was amazed that he isn’t hailed more often as an example of a successful and benevolent Communist leader.

The first President of Burkina Faso (which he named. It means “Land of Incorruptible People”). Sankara was strongly anti-imperialist, and refused any foreign aid at all. He fought famine with agrarian self-sufficiency and land reform (within four years, he was able to lead Burkina Faso to having a good surplus), installed a national literacy program and vaccinated 2.5 million children against diseases. He was also an environmentalist, as part of his agenda was planting over 10 million trees. He was a staunch believer in redistributing the wealth, taking land from feudal landlords and giving it to peasants. He also suspended rural poll taxes and domestic rents. He advocated for all villages to build medical dispensaries and had over 350 communities build schools. He was a firm supporter of women’s rights, outlawing female genital mutilation, forced marriages and polygamy and he placed women in high positions in his government. Unlike many Communist leaders, he practiced what he preached, biking to work everyday and using the cheapest possible cars for the government. He even refused to use air conditioning in his own office (because it wasn’t available to most of the country) and lowered his own salary to $450 a month, limiting his possessions to a car, four bikes, three guitars, a fridge and a freezer that was broken. Also unlike many Communist leaders, he encouraged freedom of the press. Sadly he was assassinated in 1987, but he is still a hero to many in Burkina Faso and worldwide for his big heart and the fact that he helped prove that Communism works.

A truly enlightened individual realizes that communism works when the right people are in charge, like Thomas Sankara. You just have to find them and avoid putting people like Joseph Stalin in positions of power.

Cuba may welcome him with open arms cause they've all been brainwashed down there. But he'll quickly want to go back home due to Cuba not having really much for him. Hardly a working internet and very poor cell service if any.

Venezuela? Venezuelans will bash him over the head and eat him within 24 hours.

Well I think you deserve to get away from this terrible country where people have the audacity to expect you to get off your lazy ass and actually earn a living. When you are ready to get out from your parents basement and venture into the real world with actual responsibilities, you should find one of the socialist utopias to move to. I here Venezuela is great this time of year. If you move there make sure you bring several pets with you. They have already eaten all the zoo animals so you will have to bring your own meat.

You are throwing a tantrum and resorting to personal attacks because the fact that you can't find negative things about Thomas Sankara enrages you. A heroic communist black man is your ultimate trigger and it has you positively foaming at the mouth right now.

Also, you do realize Venezuela is having trouble because your friend Trump and the CIA are actively destabilizing it, right? They just couldn't stand the fact that Venezuela had a leftist President, so they had to install a corporate puppet. Typical US, destabilizing a South American nation because "leftist politics bad".

It worked for an empire for awhile because their 70 % of their GDP is relying on natural resources export . As soon as we lower the broom (price), fast they went. The system does not promote productivity. Then you mixed money and politics, corruption will be prevalent.

I have never heard of the guy and have zero desire to look him up. That country is just another "shithole" when you get down to it. I will make one point though about your thoughts on communism working with the right person in power. In a communist power structure the leaders are basically dictators with faux democracy. Entertaining the thought that it works under the right people, what happens when the "wrong" comes in after the so called good leader dies? We all know that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Even a truly good leader will become more corrupt over time with unlimited power.

You have zero desire to look him up because he challenges your preconceived notions about Communism and you are unwilling to be openminded and accept different viewpoints. And again, when you have a true Communist leader like Sankara, the people are the ones who are in power. Not any one individual. And Burkina Faso would be certainly be doing absolutely fantastic right now if he hadn't been murdered (and let's be honest the CIA probably did it).

How are we defining success? If you're basing it on being a superpower, which is how you seem to measure it since you think the U.S. is "successful", then the Soviet Union and China are two excellent examples of "successful" Communist nations.

Precisely! :oldlol:

Because there is a rise in anti-American and pro-Communist sentiment as of the last 15-20 years. We need to squash that before we become imprisoned for what we say or what we think. Why anyone would want to live like that is beyond me.

If there are more millionaires and billionaires today than there were 50 years ago, or even 10 years ago, why would we not want that? That is a mark of success, not the other way around. Usually the people against that and that say ridiculous things like it's injustice and inequality are jobless losers who get frustrated at the fact that they have no money or prospects. What "system"?? The goal of the people at the bottom is not to stay at the bottom and point fingers and whine and moan about the people at the top. The goal of the people at the bottom should be to work their way out of the bottom and to the top.

Are you saying there is more economic prosperity in a Communist system of government? If so, then show us. Show us where this has worked and people are economically stable and able to afford things. And if one day this person wants to buy a huge mansion and three sport cars, show me where this has also worked under Communism.

From who? From members of our government who have espoused such thoughts and beliefs.

And Jeff Bezos's job isn't to end world hunger. His job is to run a successful company that can employ millions. When has throwing money at the problem ever worked? And why is it the job of the super rich to fix these problems when it should be the job of the governments that have caused these problems in the first place.

People aren't starving in Africa because of Jeff Bezos.

And apparently you think it’s morally ok for people like Bezos to hoard money they mace by exploiting workers when there is widespread suffering they could easily help alleviate. You think it’s fair that the top 1% make almost as much the rest of the country? How can you claim America to be the land of equality knowing this?

What do you think all this "Redistribution of Wealth" talk stems from? Where do you think it leads to? Sure, no one in Congress has stated their support for Communism outright, but they sure have stated some of its practices.

How can you talk about morality when you support a system of government that oppresses its people? Have you seen the tiny homes that the Chinese live in? They're called coffin homes. That's what Communism gets you.

Look I really do not give a crap TBH. There are plenty of communist countries around the world. Instead of bitching about this country, why not just move to utopia? You mention one communist leader who according to you was not a douchebag. If you are correct about him being good and that is a HUGE if then that makes a grand total of one good communist leader in history. That is not a very good track record but either way I highly encourage you to go live your dream just do it somewhere else and leave the USA alone. So he actually does live with his parents??? Heck I was just messing with him because he is so naive. I guess I struck a nerve. Yea before he completely craps all over capitalism he really ought to try participating in it. No matter what he thinks he is not entitled to take his parents stuff until they pass away and that is only if they leave it to him in their will. He is also not entitled to take my stuff, your stuff, Jeff Bezos' stuff, or anyone else's stuff. As long as he lives in the good old USA he is entitled to go out and earn money to get his own stuff. I think his parents need to practice a little bit of tough love with him so he can learn some of life's hard lessons the way we all have.

Communism and runaway capitalism (what America currently has) are both extreme ends of the scale. You should not support or want any extremes. America in the 60s and 70s was the perfect balance from economic perspective but the times were problematic because we were going through a sh!tty unnecessary war in Vietnam that brought us down to our knees. Since then, economy has gotten out of hand. We have gotten richer as a nation certainly but we have chosen crony capitalism and pushed the bounds of capitalism towards the extreme ends into the territory of corporatism.

The answer is of course not communism but to get capitalism bit under control again. We are pushing capitalism to the point that it is not sustainable and it is an experiment that will fall apart if we don't get it back together again. It is a problem when monopolies run amok. Today, something like 8 media corporations own every single media entity with independent media entities practically gone. Income inequality was also better spread out in the 70s. We could have brought down the taxes a bit from the 50s/60s levels like Reagan did and just keep it steady. But we allowed corporations to run amok, buy up politicians and just take over control through monopolies. We went away from Glass Steagall Act that had kept banks and businesses from doing risky investments and getting out of control. We began to carry on debt as a government and borrowing money from the future for dangerous purposes. We began spending obscene amounts on the military. Our government began to grow out of control. We gave blank checks to agencies like CIA to do whatever they wanted. Capitalism has gotten out of hand in past 50yrs to the point that we are losing control.

US debt is like 20 plus Trllion and counting . You can actually check the balance sheet by Federal Reserved and we are in a 20 Trillion plus hole counting all our assets and liabilities. If you made to believe that , then just look at the giant clock at Manhattan because it will not stop ticking .

The last 50 years made this nation greater . Nixon Shock is one of the least underappreciated that politicians was so clever to maneuver. Tangible long term assets such as the military sector for example is not any balance sheet and so our fossil fuel reserve and all the long term non current fixed asset of our different sector of our government. It’s an intellectual dishonesty to not include them in our net worth discussion . Why would we even liquify our hard assets when our own debt is on our own currency. Let me put it this way, let the money people take care of money and let our politicians protect that interest and deal with other issues.

He did not lived enough to see to see it through. Kim Il Sung made North Korea thriving back in the 60s and they have better economy than South Korea back then but they began to default in the 70s. His Juche had his moments and that nostalgia brainwashed them North Koreans up to this day.

It’s sad you’re this brainwashed. America is a country that was built through genocide and the most brutal form of slavery in the history of the world. African Americans didn’t even start getting their basic rights as citizens until the 1960s. If you call that great, you can have it. Soviet Russia, outside of the Stalin era, was a far superior country. It’s not even remotely close. You’ve been taught to hate Communism. Programmed, if you will. So you go online sounding like Joe McCarthy when you are challenged by the fact that people like Thomas Sankara existed. You can’t handle the idea that maybe, just maybe, your beloved “greatest country ever” has killed countless innocent people all because they lived in Communist nations. Capitalism is pure evil. Hopefully you will see this eventually.

Soviet Union spent so much money and resources on keeping up with America in the military department that the conditions their people lived in was dumpster fire poverty. Even food people could purchase had to be rationed because they didn't have much. America had poverty but USSR was like a 3rd world country once you got past the propaganda, military and glamor. They spent so much on propaganda that their citizens were kept in the dark from the conditions people lived in across the West. The Soviet government was heavily involved in censoring all forms of media. That government also hid/censored information coming out of the West because their communist government was scared of their people rising up against them (much like China today).

They had a single-party system as well. They would throw into prison camps anyone who disagreed or said/wrote something the party deemed dangerous. Those folks would just disappear never to be seen again (Sent to Siberia to work in the labor mines into death). They also had KGB and secret police imposing orders from the party, controlling the people. There was no such thing as freedom, and it was very difficult to emigrate out of USSR, if not downright impossible, until much later.

You have much to learn about the conditions people lived in during the days of the USSR. And I described not just the Stalin era but beyond. Stalin died in early 50s so USSR was still around for 40yrs more. Khrushchev came into power and did make some improvements, but the party still had him by the balls. Gorbachev was the guy who tore it all down in the early 90s. USA did a lot of sh!tty things, no doubt, installing dictators/assassinating leaders of other countries/even being an imperial country for some of its history (Teddy Roosevelt comes to mind for some reason)/took advantage of the poor and colored/segregation until the mid-60s/McCarthyism/slavery past/KKK/. Those are all dark spots in American history, but trust me, you want nothing like USSR even beyond Stalin. USSR did most of those things themselves and more to their people. Much more.

You are part of LGBT community right? They would kill you in USSR. In America, you would be ignored and discriminated against. In USSR, you would be arrested, tortured, thrown into labor camps to work and then killed. You don't want USSR.

The Soviet Union was a far superior country? :oldlol:

So many people defected or tried to detect from the Eastern Bloc that laws and a wall were put in place to prevent people from fleeing the abject failure of Communism.

The part time grocery bagger and bookstore clerk dreaming that Communism will make him equal to ambitious and successful people.

Have you lost your mind, on what planet is communism a good thing

We would end up looking like China where the government controls and dictates absolutely everything and a lot of are individual human rights would be stripped away in the process

Imagine a society where a lawyer would be making a similar amount of money to a burger flipper :facepalm

He is obviously a product of the "everyone gets a trophy" age. People like him do not understand why they are still not getting trophies handed to them all the time now that they are grown. When life lessons are not taught to children they then grow up expecting everything to be handed to them just the way it always was. They also by default do not understand that people like them are the reason why true Marxism does not work in the long run.

Lots of people attacking me for pointing out inconvenient truths about America and not focusing on the OP. We’ve yet to have a single person challenge my assertion that Thomas Sankara was a hero and a successful communist leader, so I guess we’re all in agreement there :applause:

Burkina Faso wasn't exactly thriving under Sankara's rule, it was still a shithole like the rest of Africa :lol

Have you ever been on foodstamps? Section 8 housing? Unemployment? Waited in line at a food bank? That's not a utopian lifestyle. It sucks.

I've long outlived any romanticizing of Che Guevara. The man lost his way early and is no beacon for communism.

A truly enlightened individual realizes that communism works when the right people are in charge, like Thomas Sankara. You just have to find them and avoid putting people like Joseph Stalin in positions of power.

Most communists just take power.

And even if you vote a communist into power, he never has to relinquish it. He can just never leave power if he so chooses unless somebody takes him out.

Even fake power corrupts most people almost immediately.

I watched the film on the Stanford Prison Experiment, it's worth seeing. Very disturbing movie considering it really happened. It makes one think Thomas Hobbes was right about humanity. I don't personally agree with Hobbes, but sometimes I see his point...
