For some reason, idk why but i used to smile whenever i learn any team in the east still made the playoffs as the last seed despite their losing records. Maybe because it's kinda cute to see they'll still be able to compete in the postseason whereas in the west, some teams with winning records fall short in garnering the last seed because of tighter competition. 😂
Call it trash but we all know it's given that it's common for them since the said conference is "mediocre" compared to their west counterparts, based on overall win/loss records of each teams in their respective conference. 😙
From the 00s and 10s, these are some notable teams from the eastern conference to do this feat:
2004 playoffs - boston celtics (36-46), new york knicks (39-43)
2006 playoffs - milwaukee bucks (40-42)
2007 playoffs - orlando magic (40-42)
2008 playoffs - atlanta hawks (37-45), philadelphia 76ers (40-42)
2009 playoffs - detroit pistons (39-43)
2011 playoffs - indiana pacers (37-45)
2013 playoffs - milwaukee bucks (38-44)
2014 playoffs - atlanta hawks (38-44)
2015 playoffs - brooklyn nets (38-44), boston celtics (40-42)
If it weren't for current events, who knows if this year will be another case that a last seed in the east will have a losing record. Would be nice to see again, compared to western teams that have more wins than their losses yet, still fall short of clinching the 8th seed in their respective conference to qualify for the postseason. 🤣
