so this guy (kid) is 19 years old huh...

I never really gave it that much thought until tonight, but after looking at his picture, and after the draft reminded me that this kid isn't old enough to drink at a bar but he looks about 50 years old, I am now 95% sure he has gigantism...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigantism#Other_conditions_of_overgrowth_or_excess ive_tallness_in_childhood

he will have really bad health problems later on in his career and I don't think he will be in the NBA past the age of 28. In fact I think he will die before the age of 40.

So you're gonna make a "Who is Lebron James? Well I'll tell you guys" topic next? Da hell you making topics about players we already know? Stop being a f*cking assclown. Odom is gigantic? No shyt. He looks 50? How original. You're such the comedian. Then let me add some moronic babble to boot like how he will die soon and cant drink legally.

Dude, he's way too athletic and his stamina is way too good to have gigantism. Guys like Muresan, Podkolzin, and Sun Ming Ming have that. Besides, don't you think that'd be a major topic of discussion? That would've been a major red flag.

Tall people get tested for that kind of stuff dude. Trust me, it'd be widely known if he had it.

I seriously don't understand why it hasn't been brought up before?

has nobody even questioned if he has that or not?....does he not look like a black george muresan to you?

the fact that he is more athletic doesn't mean he doesn't have the desease

so Muresan was tested for it when he played and it was known?

and it isn't the fact that he is just a "tall person"....look at his face dude....a 19 year old can not look like that without some kind of hormone defect

It hasn't been brought up because he doesn't have it. Seriously, if he'd shown symptoms he would've been tested.

Yes, his athleticism is major evidence suggesting he doesn't have it. It's a freakin tumor on the pituitary gland that causes excess production of growth hormone. Brain tumors mess people up. That's the reason guys like Muresan, Pavel, and Sun don't have any athleticisim or stamina.

And he was like the athletic opposite of Oden.

no, I am asking you if the NBA was aware that Muresan had that desease or not...you said they get tested

Yes, of course they were aware, just like Utah was aware when they drafted Pavel. Neither was the number one pick, though. Why have you disregarded my point about athleticism and stamina? That's the definitive prove.

I haven't disregarded it....I am just not conviced that having a hormone defect causes you to be less athletic or have less stamina....but if you are right you are right....it isn't a brain tumor though

It's not just a hormonal defect. Gigantism is caused by a brain tumor on the pituitary gland, which causes excess production of growth hormone.

so, why would that make you less athletic or have less stamina?

all it is really doing is causeing his body to produce more hormone...it isn't taking his lungs away from him...

Honestly, all I can say is brain tumors mess people up. I'm not gonna BS some advanced scientific explanation because, truthfully, I'm no expert on the subject. However, everyone that I've ever heard of having gigantism (from Robert Wadlow to Sun Ming Ming) has awful stamina and athleticism, and it has always been blamed as the cause of that.

ok, I guess I will take your word here...

but it is still impossible for me to look at a picture of Oden and not think to myself that his hormones have to be malfunctioning in some way...

Typical adult heights of Americans and Europeans to whom the term might be applied are 225 - 240 cm (7'6" - 8 feet). The term is rarely applied to those whose heights appear to be the healthy result of normal genetics and nutrition.

Oden was really born in 1971.

Are you a doctor or something you can't be sure about those things just from looking at him. "He looks 50" past players with gigantism didn't look older than they were what the hell are you talking about. If this was true don't you think that someone other than you would have realized it and don't yoo think that Oden himself would have had a check up or something about stuff like this. Come your basing all this on looks thats not enough evidence.

as a 3rd yr med student, i can tell you with certainty that Oden does not have pituitary gigantism...it would be something well known by now in his career with all the physicals he's had to endure...even if he did have it, there are drugs that can be used (mainly one called Octreotide) to suppress the secretion of GH from the pituitary...same drug that can be used to treat acromegaly except acromegaly typically occurs later in adult life...hope that satisfies you...

So... any chance some team gives this guy $5M a year next season? He's tall and by default that should get you the MLE in this league
