View Full Version : Who would be the best 1 on 1 player in NBA history?

Shogon

If there were an entire NBA history 1 on 1 tournament where people were all magically in their primes, who would win a best of 5 for each matchup bracket?

I’m pretty torn on this but I was curious as to how ISH would lean...

Honestly, the logical choice is MJ or Kobe, or prime Tmac.....

But in a pure one on one halfcourt game.... Kevin Durant beats every single guy more than they beat him.

Depends, who gets the ball first?
I was thinking to this too. But look at it this way...
Durant would not be able to stop peak Shaq from backing him down under the goal and bodying him every time.
On the other hand I think Shaq can stop KD at least once out 10 tries, since he would be telling on jumpshots mostly.

Honestly, whenever we talk 1 on 1 it's almost exclusively talked about for perimeter players...it is interesting to think about big men.

Minnesota KG was a different animal. Truly a great PF, MVP player...but I still would give the nod to the dream. I can't think of a more mobile big man while still being 7ft tall, offensively dominant, and among the GOAT defenders in history. Think about it, everyone's favorite player at one point in time went to Hakeem to learn some moves, perimeter players going to a center :lol

The height that allows him to shoot over anyone and defend the tall guys.

The length and quickness to defend anyone.

The ball handling to get by anyone.

The shooting and finishing ability comparable to anyone.

It's an absolute freaking tragic shame that he injured himself this past season as he, at the time, was the best player in the world. Everyone knew it.

I know that but i have a hard time believing theres an NBA player out there that isn't known but has the best combo of 1v1 defense and 1v1 offense skills to take on a guy like KD. Surely there would be some buzz in the league if he was that good. He would get some playing time just simply based on his man to man defense

I am disappointed to see KGs name in this thread so much

The whole reason he's not a top ten player ever is because he wasn't a great one on one player. The biggest difference between Duncan and Garnett on an individual player basis was you could give the ball to Duncan in a one on one situation and you like you're chances of him scoring if left alone.

KG could do it, just not consistently. He doesn't deserve to be in this thread AT ALL.

the nba actually had a 1 on 1 money tournament in '72. the final was jo jo white (6'3" 190) vs bob lanier (6'11" 250).

lanier won (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zk9WhHFhLus).

big men, especially those with good defense and mobility, have the big advantage in a 1 on 1.

too bad we're in the era of team-hopping, teaming-up divas. probably couldn't do something like that today.

feel like only players from this era (2000s on) who would sign up for it would be kobe, kg, and westbrook.

we couldn't get this man bron to compete in a dunk contest but you think he'd risk getting humiliated by kobe or kd in a 1 on 1?

Well there's limited video out there and tons of anecdotal evidence from interviews and books i guess. Wilt was pretty much what happens if Shaq would have reached his full potential. Had a soft touch around the basket despite being one of the most powerful guys to ever play. Averaged 50 for a season in 5 on 5 so its hard to believe any small guy is giving that version of Wilt any problems. I hate the ghost stories they tell about him but the legit sounding takes say he was pretty unstoppable if he decided to be. There were still stories of him putting current nba stars in their place in pickup games when he was in his 40s retired.

I considered Shaq as back-up, but Shaq really used brawn, size and strength more than his skillset. Wilt had a fadeaway at least, not a super consistent and wet one, but one he got to drop every so often. You might notice most of my picks have a fade.

Of course Shaq could back anybody down into the paint, but not Wilt probably, and besides that sh*t is jive.

Most of his points come off of screens or full court breaks situations. Hes one of the best ever when it comes to 5 on 5 but he wouldn't even be a top 20 when it comes to one on one all time.
