Guys,

I need some tips on dribbling the ball when the guy is body to body with you and you have no where to go. How can you effectively advance the ball up court without getting stripped and relieving the defensive pressure?

Any tips would be great.

What I do is get low to the ground. Dribble the ball as close to the ground as possible and lower your opposite shoulder into the defender a bit. As you lower your shoulder push the ball ahead and explode by your man. The key is to keep the ball low and move as fast as you can. Works for me just about every time.

Keep this in the back of your mind:

unless you are doubled to the point that you are stymied:

Never EVER give up your dribble.

Keep that thought process in the back of your head at all times.

as for tips and tricks, practice spinning and crossovers (doing the between the legs is technically called a "Between the Legs Crossover." When I say crossover I simply mean using your right hand, and dribbling the ball to your left side and vice versa. something else you could try is changing the speed at which your bring the ball up.

always remember, when dribbling, if you can get your opposite shoulder in front of the guy guarding you, he is beat.

if someone is guarding you that close you should be able to blow past him easily

not if they play hard by handchecking you, wrapping their arms in a cup around you, bodying up entirely... etc....

what are you going to do? call a foul?

never dribble up the sideline just traps u

when you get the inbound survey the defense for a quick second and then jab one way and take off using your strong hand

i think it depends on size and strength and speed. if ur faster, cross him over, if ur stronger b a gary payton and back him down halfcourt and size just intimidate him:banana:

no matter what, always keep in the back of your mind to NEVER give up your dribble unless not doing so would result in a DEFINITE turnover

protect the ball with your body, atleast you get a foul with you if he tries to strip to ball from you if you protect it right.

stay in the middle part of the court. stay away from the sides as much as possible. if he's guarding you too close, keep on changing directions by dribling low and using simple spin moves, fakes and hesitation moves. wait for the oportunity to beat your oponent. be patient and dont panic.

if your not the point guard, give the damn ball to the pg hehe

against casual street opposition, I actually like to dribble down teh sideline, even if they throw two guys and try to trap me because that opens the top of the floor open for my slashers.

I'm talking about English national league.

Dribble low and turn your back to them. If they know you're getting nervous and pressured, they're going to try to take the ball or poke it away. Just protect the ball with your back and wait for an opening. Dribbling low is key, and not panicking.

if he's body to body, push off with your body and bump him away.

minute you catch the ball turn, make one solid fake and sprint like hell, if he doesn't bite you just set your man up and cross his ass up, and remember, breaking presses by yourself is heroic!:D

whisper: didn't that skyscraper dude just join like yesterday? he's already practically doubling me for posts

you can always just pass the ball too.

If you are single team, dosent metter if you are small, post the guy and dribble low, then try to go away from the basket so you bring the guy away from the paint and you got more room to pass the ball or atack if he try to take the ball from you. Never Never stop the dribbling or you will get stock with no room to pass or shoot because your small.

call time-out!

if not dribble to ball low and bring it up... if he goes for the steal there'll probably be a foul... if he doesn't you succeeded!

dont dribble into pressure

Admiral

definitely don't dribble into any pressure you're not confident in handling...as mentioned by others, if you can get your shoulder down, don't hesitate to act on that...if you hesitate and make the defender realize what you're gonna do he can take a step back and step into your lane cutting it off...

however...hesitation can be an art...something i've never mastered...just keep your defender guessing and never do the same thing exactly the same twice in a row...it will give your defender confidence he doesn't deserve...always own the situation, and don't be confined to what your defender is doing...make him react to you...that puts you in control

no 8 second call in pickup games. just slow it down and go lateral.

or work on splitting the trap

Never Stop Dribbling...

If Ur At Mid Court Try A Jab Step Or Fake On Ur Weak Side And Spin To Your Right. If You Perfect This Move And Keep Ur Eyes On The Rim Ull Be Un Stopable

But Of Courseif U Do Go To The Sidelinestoss The Ball On Him As Low And Soft As Possible. Haveing The Ball Out Of Bounds Is Better Than A Turnover

Here's something to go along with the other suggestions.

Start off bringing the ball up with your non-dominant hand. Vast majority of the time the man pressuring the ball will put more pressure ball-side.

This means he'll give you a chance to crossover to your dominant hand and accelerate into the front court. Don't make it an exaggerated crossover. Just bust a cross and explode out. Make sure you are putting that ball out in front of you so you can take longer strides as you run.

Next time the you brings the ball up the defender will be aware of the crossover. Many times he'll be so aware that he makes himself an easy target for a double crossover.

use your body as a shield, and back up.. always back up.. he comes at you u back up.. if you get him to follow you back.. hes beat, well if you put a good move on him. But when ever your backing up and your defender is following him hes easy to beat, because hed have to immediatly start going backwards which is hard if he has foward momentum. you get what im saying? And you can use an arm bar to keep him from the ball.

Well what the other guys said is what you should do but if the guys playing really hard defense just run over him... shoulder him hard and knock em over, i almost guarantee he will stop playing on you so hard, remember you got some fouls, use em.
