View Full Version : Why Doesn't Defense Get As Much Respect These Days?

So in the 90's and 2000's it seemed like even the causal fan would mention defense when comparing one player to another. These days it's not considered as often. We hear terms like "2 way player" all the time now like it's as rare as a Panda. You would assume that if Player A and Player B are equal offensively that the one who plays solid defense consistently would be the better player. Yet there are so many reckless arguments (sometimes just excuses) made for the guy who is a bad defender.

From a fan and media stand point All NBA Team voters are some of the few who still put heavy importance into guys who play on that end of the ball. Like in other sports do you guys think that fans will pay more attention to defense with the rise of Advanced Defensive Metrics??

Too many stars on winning teams can't play defense.

This.

Curry/Westbrook/KD are all top 5 players that are underwhelming defenders in context. They are hidden by solid defensive teams (in Curry's case an ATG defensive team) and Hugh powered offenses.

Lebron/Kawhi/AD/PG13/CP3 are all still superstar level players that are elite defensively though.

The league has reduced the impact defenders can have on the game. As a result they are less valuable than they used to be. Its more about being in sync as a team and knowing what your team's defensive principles are on defense.

KD actually played great defense last playoffs. He's getting there. He just needs to be consistent and we may see it this season with how shitty the Dubs interior defense looks in paper.

I'd say it is the exact opposite actually.

I think almost everyone, with the exception of few is required to be a good two way player now. If you aren't, you're called out for it. Look how much shit Kevin Love got in the finals.

You struggle to play in today's league if you aren't a semi-competent defender at the very least. Too much switching and mismatches in the game today for it not to be the case. I mean, you have guys like Love who is a 20/10 guy taking a seat because he can't play some D.

An average college player would burn an all-defensive nba player if they where allowed some of the travels/carries/fends that all-stars can get away with. really. its impossible to play defense against a guy that takes 4 steps or carries it around their body.

Yea that's why I added "in context".
Overall KD was good defensively and quite superb vs the Warriors defensively.
But for a 6'10 forward with the skills and quickness of a guard his defense isn't where it should be yet.

I'd say you and Fkari are both right.

The defensive skills are reduced in some ways as the NBA rules make is hard to defend perimeter and even block shots with the 3 second rule.

But you need to be very competent within the defensive schemes with timing and positioning still, or the defense falls apart more than ever. That's something that has greatly improved in the modern NBA.
