Because at his absolute best, he still was never going to be as good as Kobe.

A PG who supposedly has great handles and a great jumpshot should be succeeding in this league, no?

Probably didn't put enough effort in because of believing his own hype.

He got paid and stopped caring. I think people underestimate the effect of earning 8 figure type money.

He rode the pine in Milwaukee prior to Kidd , and when Kidd got him , he was in the league when Kidd played , so Kidd used him as a second stringer.
OJ Mayo in Milwaukee has had his share of health problems.

When he is going , he surprisingly has a very nice jumper, as well as dimes out surprisingly well in Kidd's system.

from the get if he was in the right system .... he would probably have been a better player career wise./

Mayo's first two years in the league he averaged; 18/4/3 on 45/85/38%. He definitely had to ability to be an All-Star caliber player had he continued to improve. Maybe he got injured or something, but I don't remember any significant injuries.

Wasn't he good for half a season in Dallas? I think he had recently signed with them and was tearing it up for a little bit.

I don't know, but I guess he never had "it".

To be a star in the league u HAVE to be great at something (scoring, passing, boards, defense). And a lot of the superstars in the league are great at two, three, or even four things. Mayo was NEVER great at anything. From there he didn't have great size OR athletic ability.

Even a guy like Rodman was a great rebounder AND a great defender. And from there parlayed that into an HOF career. Plain and simple, Mayo was WAY OVERHYPED!!

In your opinion.

It all goes back to his HS years. He want to MJ's camp and talked massive shit to old MJ. After the camp was over, MJ and Mayo played 1on1 and MJ made him feel like a poor mans Kwame Brown. Destroyed his confidence for the rest of his life and humbled him like a lil bitch. This actually happened.

Edit: Just read earlier replies. There's your answer. The MJ effect.

Hell even Martell lWebster was overhyped as a player at one point of his career coming out of highschool. They were hyping Martell as the next Kobe type of player just because he had some range on his jumper, and he could dunk on high school players three times smaller than him...:oldlol:
