The All-Star game used to be both competitive and entertaining. Used to be the best all-star game in sports. It has declined over the years to more of an exhibition that becomes somewhat competitive in the 4th quarter. Last night hit rock-bottom. Neither competitive nor entertaining at any point. It was a 48 minute pre-game lay-up line.

This game wasn't always the pathetic 3-point contest/lay up BRO FEST it has become.

I always go back to the 1987 all-star game, look at the stacked lineups that game had, it had everything even hard fouls!!!! It was a decorated event with players actually giving a damn.

The present league has too many teams, players are making too much damn money, the draft picks get younger and rawer by the minute, coaches aside from Pop have no power over so called "superstar" players etc... The inmates are running the asylum basically.

Shaq deserves A LOT OF THE BLAME for turning the all-star game into the embarrassment it is now with his stupid dancing and clowing around. Go watch him back in the 90's all-star games when elder players like Ewing, Robinson, Jordan and Olajuwon were running things, he behaved A LOT differently than the way he did in the 2000's when he was supposed to be older and "more mature". Even Magic can't stand he's immature as!

Just watched some of that 1987 ASG, OMG they were actually competing. These were real men with pride. Look at the way they played, they are actually defending...trying to stop the other guy from scoring. :eek:

To think of how great the game could have been if they took it seriously like in '87.... It's sad.

why do you care so much about this game? you already know what you get. no defense, lot of chuck up threes, some spectacular dunks. like every year.
either you like and watch it or you hate it and you dont watch it.

it is significant that dirks dunk was the highlight of last years lame AS-game

Considering the fact that in 87' they were running actual offenses and feeding the post on multiple occasions down the floor and players actually CHALLENGING SHOTS I'd say the pace was just perfect!

At least those players didn't complain about length of schedule like today's soft pus!ies! They also played in a faster league than today's snail paced run to shoot corner 3's NBA.

1987 pace 101 to 2016 pace of 95!!! with no hand checking, clear painted area, no dominant big people or physicality and they are STILL COMPLAINGING!!!

The game used to be on at prime time on NETWORT TELEVISION!

The game since the mid 2000's had been on TBS/TNT! Nuff said!

Like someone said to me once, the league is basically as good as your top players, take a look at some of the names from 1987;

Jordan, Bird, McHale, Moses, Isaiah, Barkley, Dr J, Magic, Laimbeer, Parish, Wilkins, Worthy, Olajuwon, Chambers, Kareem, Aguirre, Cheeks, English!!!!

No wonder they call it the Golden Generation!!! Today's game just can't compete with that talent!
