Kobe's defense was good in that clip, and he was 19 years old. KG is a PF guarding Jordan on the perimeter. That says more about Garnett's defensive versatility than anything, despite Jordan making the shot.

Allen Iverson on crossing Jordan:

"But the craziest thing about it, was that I hit him with my best move.... and he STILL almost blocked it... (laughs embarassingly)... That was so crazy about it.. That's just lets you know how great of a defensive player he was."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLhI9cgsO4c&t=0m40s

Jordan kept Iverson in front of him - Iverson couldn't blow by Jordan the way Jordan blew by all the 1st team defenders shown previously itt (Garnett, Kobe, Bruce Bowen, etc.)

The gif shows that Iverson couldn't get past MJ and had to settle for low-quality jumper that almost got blocked.

Otoh, MJ frequently blew by first team, all-nba defenders and got all the way to the rim, even if there were 3 guys jumping with him:

Um, no. Iverson blew right by him. The only reason he shot the pull up is because Pippen was right there to help. Jordan bit HARD on the crossover and couldn't stay in front of him. Iverson had him swiping at air.

The Iverson gif shows that MJ doesn't let guys get by him, no matter how quick.. Otoh, look at Pippen - he can't stay in front of Grant Hill:

http://cdn.makeagif.com/media/10-09-2015/5FXjSn.gif

Yet Iverson blew right by Jordan and it was Pippen that had to cut him off. In fact, Pippen's great help defense in that clip clearly demonstrates that he was a much better help defender than Jordan. I used to hold them in about an equal defensive regard, but now I have to rank Pippen ahead of Jordan.

.
Pippen couldn't handle quick wings with good handle like Hill or Kobe:

http://cdn.makeagif.com/media/10-10-2015/NZrhCv.gif

Here's Kobe shaking his head after breaking Pippen BADLY in 99' - Pippen is joke to him:

http://cdn.makeagif.com/media/10-10-2015/DtKoPr.gif..

But just months earlier, Jordan had no problem stuffing Kobe's crossover in 98' ASG:

http://cdn.makeagif.com/media/10-10-2015/EStPHq.gif

The reason MJ was so much better defending quick ballhandlers like Hill, Kobe or Westbrook is because he was a 2-guard, and was frequently the primary, all-game defender on quick point guards.

For example, MJ was matched up against Gary Payton from the TIP-OFF in Game 3 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meL62CUehuw&t=0m48s) and Game 5 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFiqeJcgXfg) of the NBA Finals and was the main defender throughout the game.. MJ was also the main defender and matched up from the tip-off against Isiah Thomas (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9MfhFFE7fc&t=0m28s) and Rod Strickland (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3JqY3CECW8), while also shuttting down John Stockton (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOuMwmXtgd0) and Kevin Johnson (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6K2rBgOqGCw)..

And we all know he was matched up from tip-off against Magic, when he guarded Magic for 14 of 20 quarters (http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showpost.php?p=11713075&postcount=45) (70%) in the 1991 Finals.

MJ's far greater experience playing quick ballhandling guards and his superior athleticism made him a better perimeter defender than Pippen..

Lebron choked in the clutch against Duncan/Popovich and missed the walk-off attempt - he needed Ray Allen to save him:

http://cdn.makeagif.com/media/10-05-2015/XxRuyC.gif

Otoh, Jordan MADE his walk-off attempt in his first meeting against Duncan/Popovich to send the game into overtime:

http://cdn.makeagif.com/media/10-05-2015/rP-QUs.gif

After hitting the walk-off, MJ dominated overtime, including 2 dunks over Duncan:

In his 2nd meeting against Duncan, MJ dominated Duncan even more thoroughly:

Garnett was All-NBA in 2002 and MJ destroyed him OVER AND OVER in their first meeting when MJ was a Wizard - they were both matched up at SF the whole game.

The youtube channel "Nobody Touches Jordan" chronicled every possession of the matchup in this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAYpxH-YU8M[/url)..

MJ scored 14 points on 6-11 (55%) with Garnett guarding him, including 2 assists and 2 TO's (35/6/4 overall).. Compare that to Lebron averaging 9 ppg on 4-12 (35%) against Iggy in Finals.. Each play with Garnett defending is listed below and linked to the video:

MJ makes jumpshot on Garnett at 0:28 second mark (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAYpxH-YU8M&t=0m28s)... 1-1 FG

MJ misses jumpshot on Garnett at 1:05 mark (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAYpxH-YU8M&t=1m05s)... 1-2

MJ drives by Garnett for assist at 2:29 mark (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAYpxH-YU8M&t=2m29s)

MJ makes crazy hangtime shot on Garnett at 2:59 mark (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAYpxH-YU8M&t=2m59s)... 2-3

MJ blows by Garnett but misses layup at 3:08 mark (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAYpxH-YU8M&t=3m08s)... 2-4

MJ misses pull-up jumper at 3:29 mark (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAYpxH-YU8M&t=3m29s)... 2-5

MJ makes jumper on Garnett at 3:37 mark (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAYpxH-YU8M&t=3m37s)... 3-6

MJ blows by Garnett for acrobatic left hand layup at 3:44 mark (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAYpxH-YU8M&t=3m44s).. 4-7

MJ blows by Garnett for dunk at 4:00 mark (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAYpxH-YU8M&t=4m00s).... 5-8

MJ makes crazy pull-up fadeaway on Garnett at 4:15 mark (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAYpxH-YU8M&t=4m15s)... 6-9

MJ draws foul on Garnett at 4:30 mark (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAYpxH-YU8M&t=4m30s).... 2 made FT's

MJ blows by Garnett but misses easy layup at 5:06 mark (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAYpxH-YU8M&t=5m06s).... 6-10

At times it got embarrassing for KG, as MJ would score on him literally 5 possessions in a row (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=embqhggoep4&t=4m00s) - even the hometown announcers had to capitulate.

True guard speed (which MJ possessed in spades, arguably the GOAT first step for a guy his size or larger; also GOAT level lateral quickness, but this thread isn't about MJ's defense) obviously is a tremendous asset. Huge boon to have the ability to create separation without the need of a screen for assistance..

The gif shows that Iverson couldn't get past MJ and had to settle for low-quality jumper that almost got blocked.

Otoh, MJ frequently blew by first team, all-nba defenders and got all the way to the rim, even if there were 3 guys jumping with him:

MJ was such a beast.

BTW: Another pointless thread by 3ball.

Kevin Garnett was First Team All-Defense at small forward in 2002, alongside Tim Duncan and Ben Wallace, Gary Payton and Kidd.

And the 39-year old MJ destroyed him SF vs. SF - he scored 14 points on Garnett, on 6-11 (55%)... (35/6/4 overall).

Compare that to Lebron's 9 points on 4-12 (35%) against Iggy in the 2015 Finals... Btw, notice how MUCH Jordan beats Garnett by... Whereas Lebron almost never got by Iggy at all.
.

In what parallel NBA universe was Kevin Garnett still a sf in 2002?

Look how many times and how THOROUGHLY Jordan blows by Garnett in their first meeting of MJ as a Wizard - they were matched up SF vs. SF from tip-off:

Jordan destroyed him - he had 35 points, including 6-11 (55%) for 14 points on KG - compare that to Lebron's 9 ppg average vs. Iggy in the Finals, on 35% shooting..

At times it got embarrassing for KG, as MJ would score on him literally 5 possessions in a row (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=embqhggoep4&t=4m00s) - even the hometown announcers had to capitulate.
