Former No. 1 overall pick Anthony Bennett is looking for a third team in as many seasons after he reached a buyout with the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday, according to Sham Charania of Yahoo Sports.
Yahoo reports that the Portland Trail Blazers are expected suitors for the 6-foot-8 forward who was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers with the first pick in the 2013 draft.
Blazers assistant coach Jay Triano is the head coach of the Canadian men's national team and coached Bennett in two FIBA tournaments this summer. Fellow Blazers assistant David Vanterpool was on Triano's staff and got to work with Bennett throughout the offseason at the PanAm Games and FIBA Americas Championship.
"I think Anthony Bennett's summer has been absolutely fantastic for us," Triano told reporters in early September.
"He's engaged in everything that we do on the floor, off the floor, rebounding. We've asked him to rebound, and he's done it on a continuous basis. He runs the floor on a continuous basis. He provides help on the defensive end. He understands our defensive system."
Bennett has averaged 4.7 points, 3.4 rebounds and 14.3 minutes in 109 career games with the Cavaliers and Timberwolves. He was part of the three team trade that sent Kevin Love to Cleveland and Andrew Wiggins to Minnesota last summer, but never found his stride with the Timberwolves. He was due $5.8 million this season with a $7.3 million team option for 2016-17 prior to reaching a buyout.
He will be placed on waivers beginning Wednesday. Only the Blazers, 76ers, Cavaliers and Utah Jazz have the cap space to claim Bennett off waivers at his full $5.8 million salary. The Philadelphia 76ers are also likely to pursue Bennett and have the first chance to claim him off waivers by virtue of having the worst record in the league last season. If he clears waivers, Bennett would become a free agent and would be free to sign with any team at a new, likely significantly lower, salary.
If the Blazers were to sign Bennett, 22, he would join a crowded frontcourt rotation in Portland that already includes Meyers Leonard, Ed Davis, Noah Vonleh, Mason Plumlee and Chris Kaman.
