View Full Version : Players who had underrated primes?

Which players do people tend to forget about how good their primes really were?
For me guys like P. Gasol and Horry come to mind. Gasol was the best big in the game at the time he was winning titles. Horry was a clutch god. He simply didnt miss in big spots, and it erased the mistakes and crunch time bricks of his teammates on many, many occasions.
So who makes your list, ISH? Also, plz no trolling or agendas. .
Lookin forward to good discussion

Ron Artest was a great player during his prime, his crazy antics sometimes take away from how valuable he was.

Wade
This. Wade between 2006-11 better than any 5 year stretch of a shooting guard since MJ. Shame his game fell off so much after that with injuries etc.

Bob McAdoo
Led league in scoring three straight seasons, averaging:
32/13.9/2.8 with 1.2 steals and 2.5 blocks on 51.3%
And:
96 defensive rating over that time, which equal's Duncan's career average.

Pippen, Odom, Gasol
I actually agree with all of these despite the agenda.
Well... not Pippen really. Fans and analysts during the 90's were calling him the 2nd best player in the league behind Jordan at the time, and there was never close to a time of that being true.

True, that's the problem with people saying Lakers won with no top 100 player all time.
True Gasol and Odom career wise are not ranked that high, but the exact peak they displayed from 08-10 easily replicated many all time greats

couple power forwards from a dozen years ago have been forgotten entirely
antonio mcdyess
elton brand
jermaine o'neal
three that come to mind anyway
brand was my favourite of those guys
mcdyess was incredible returning from that injury, everybody thought he was dead in the water

I think prime Amare gets underrated because it's so easy to forget how good he was due to his injuries. He benefited heavily from the Suns system but he was an animal back in the day. I'll still remember him giving it to the Spurs in the playoffs.

Wade, Ginobili, Stoudemire, Marion on the top of my head. Players that now are old and they don't show not even 50% of what they were in their primes. The young guys make fun of Amare and Shawn for being role players but they were beasting in Pheonix.

Corey Maggette 03/04 to 04/05
Decent numbers with 21, 6, and 3, but 9 free throws a game.
Harden and Durant should be called Maggettesque (with a very French accent)

I know you don't particularly care for too much outside of your agenda, but Gasol for me falls into the same category as McHale in terms of the second guy that people forgot how good they were.
Gasol was a 20/10 guy the two championship years for the Lakers. In fact, you have guys like Aldridge, Bosh and others who put up prettier numbers, but aren't his equal in terms of being a basketball player. His defense was also top notch at the ring, and you combine that with Bynum in there, and it is crazy.

I keep saying it on here, but Wade.
People act like 30/5/8 is just some run of the mill numbers. Not to mention the guy has career averages of 24/5/6 while just about having the same amount of career points as Larry Bird, as well as the same amount of rings.
My point is, he is severely overlooked in terms of all time great status.

Elton Brand anybody? :confusedshrug:
The dude was a monster through the first 9 years of his career, consistently averaging 20 & 10, and even put up 24.7 ppg and 10 rpg one season and led the Clippers to the second round for the first time in all eternity.

A large majority of people have him as the 3rd best SG ever

he was also an MVP candidate on the knicks before Melo came over.

Yeah, he was a lot better than people are willing to credit for. I think the biggest one, on ISH, is AI for this thread. The growth of analytics and efficiency has really made him a target for a lot of stupid comments.

I'll make a homer pick and say Alonzo Mourning. Most people recognize he was a great player before the kidney issues, but I think a lot of people forget just how good he was in his prime. His back to back seasons in '99 and '00 were beastly.
20/11 on 56%TS, 4 bpg, 25 PER, DPOY, 2nd in MVP voting
22/10 on 60%TS, 4 bpg, 26 PER, DPOY, 3rd in MVP voting
At just 29 when diagnosed with the kidney disease, he probably had 2-3 more comparable seasons left. On a side note, It was awesome that he came back and was able to get a ring. He was a big-time contributor too. IMO, his impact in the finals was second only to Wade.

All those are great picks in different ways! For example, prime Ray Allen REDEFINED the SG spot right under many people noses. Before him, u didn't see a pure shooter SG with his blend of handles, athletic ability, and passing ability all in one. Ray could be in a three point shootout AND dunk contest and hold his own. GOAT wise, many people don't realize Ray is a top 10 GOAT SG.
When it comes to Bob McAdoo, peak wise he's EASILY a top 10 center of all time. But for all intents and purposes, he played most of his career as a PF. So peak wise for a PF, u could say McAdoo is more of a top 4-5 PF of all time. He was a more well rounded player than Dirk AND was just as prolific a scorer.
And it's also a crime that Andre Miller never made an All Star Game. Bobby Jones was one of the first guys who could literally defend every position. And he was a freakish athlete to boot. Dale Ellis at one point was a top 3 caliber SG in the world just behind MJ and Drexler.
