or

b) you had their telephone number and you picked up a landline

The league has contributed also by instructing refs not to allow trash talking on the court. Players don't go at one another like they used to because they know the refs won't allow it. Also everything you do on the court is talked about in the media. They don't miss anything, so if you say something bad to a player your image is affected ---> your money is affected from contracts,deals,etc because you are not seen as a good model for young people and kids.
Everyone wants to see superstars go at one another. But how many of them actually guard each other in games. How many want that challenge? Besides Lebron (maybe not so much this year) who was guarding the best player on the other side every time there aren't that many superstars that want and have the ability to guard the best player of the other team. Maybe Kobe and Wade a few years ago. It's nice to see OKC vs Cavs because you know LBJ and Durant will be playing one another.

OP has a point but the soft rules are the biggest factor on why it's so soft. Players will be as physical as the rules will allow them to be. At its core, basketball is a physical game where men regularly get into contact with each other, especially in the post. The league has taken such an extreme stance of not allowing almost any physicality. It's part of the game. They should pick a happy medium. I miss the hard fouls to send a message and the trash talking and the rivalries built on those factors.
