2010 and 2013 for me. 2013 was just incredibly impressive seeing Kobe go all out every night and score at will against anybody at an advanced age. Shame he got injured, that Spurs/Lakers series would've been incredibly fun to watch.
I honestly hated Kobe in 2010, but boy was he fun to watch, an absolute killer in the clutch. I remember watching the Heat/Lakers game where Kobe banked in that 3 over Wade, and I was both stunned and in awe at the same time. These certainly weren't the best Kobe's, but they are my favorites

2002-03 Kobe easily. That's his best-all-around year of his career (arguably), and he even started to grow into the alpha mantra of the team as he outdistanced his own teammate (Shaq) in MVP-voting—the proverbial takeover of the team.

2005-06 will likely be the majority's fan favorite—and understandably so; it was his most prolific scoring season, while he won over much new fanbase ground in the wake of the saga of the previous-two seasons—but 2002-03 was his most effective season, as Kobe established himself as a two-way force. By 2005-06, despite his All-NBA Defense First Team electeeship and his still-elite peak value as a defender, he started to coast on defense to conserve his energy for offense—when he felt the onus was on him to be an offensive orchestrator, as he became the primary option.

2002-03 is also when Kobe started to merit the BITW (best in the world) status, and some media figures even started to espouse him as such. Sadly, he was derailed by the rape case the following summer and ongoing strife with Shaq that he faltered the following-two seasons, and thus he wasn't etched as a media- and fanbase-consensus BITW until the 2005-2010 stretch.

2003 by far. That's the best version of him.

He could do everything...shooting, slashing, explosive dunks, crossovers, passing, defense. Go back and look at what he was doing after the first 30 or so games from that season I don't think he's ever been better on both ends. Look at some of the ridiculous highlights from that year (dunk on Yao, reverse dunks against the Knicks and Timberwolves, behind the back dunk against the Nuggets, etc). Love that season.

Definitely 2006.

35/5/5/2 on 45/35/85%

I remember he had multiple runs of 40+ point games... and of course the 81 point game.

If he could have pulled off the upset over the Suns, it would've been epic. That Lakers squad had no business being in that series.

02-03: Athletic peak and best shape of his career. 9 straight 40's. 55 on MJ. Best dunks.
05-06: 81. Birth of the Black Mamba.
12-13: Beasting and turn backed the clock.

My favorite Kobe years.

2003 Kobe > 2006 Kobe comfortably IMO

Better defender, more athletic, and managed 30/7/6 splitting the first option duties with Shaq. Only thing 2006 kobe was better at was shooting more to get more points...

2013 kobe was great. When he brought in the kobe system then ended the season with a broken acl doing all he could to get his team mates to the playoffs.

That game against the warriors was a true reflection of kobe. And just how much pressure and stakes he puts on himself. The toughness the guts the will. And it also reflected that kobe is willing to give his all untill he is physically unable to anymore.

A true role model for the next generation of sportsman.

2008 was my favorite Kobe season. He was as good a scorer as in the 2 previous years but managed to evolve the team better and grew up as a leader. His play in the first 3 rounds of the playoffs were nothing but genius. Unfortunately, Celtics ruined everything.

2003 was probably most fun to watch in terms of two-way prowess. 2006 had the epic scoring year, but coasted alot to save energy. I liked 2009 Kobe as well, less athletic but skills were perfected and was more cerebral.

I think he just meant superior athleticism and long range shooting. In this aspect I can see what he means, I don't think he actually means Kobe was as good as Bird and Jordan combined. But his game was a similar combination of the two.

03 Kobe was a combination of gritty defense, coupled with elite athleticism like Mike and long range shooting like Bird.

#8 Kobe >> #24 Kobe?

the funny thing is... its actually an argument

people dont realize just how much kobe held back while playing with shaq

if a guy can put up 30 next to another guy putting up 30. imagine what his average would be if he took all those shots instead of splitting them

35ppg was nice in 2006. but i believe if 2003 kobe didnt have shaq the entire year he probably averages around 40 for the year

granted the lakers would be worse. but what modern day team has a 40 ppg player at all.. let alone on a playoff team.

Yeah, he was at his peak during the 9 straight 40 pt games, but overall his body couldn't hold up at that weight and he slowed down somewhat during the Playoffs. Lakers would have won the title had Shaq been healthy that year.

He needed knee surgery right after the season though, he was busting his ass because IIRC, that was the year they played their worst defense (during the Shaq-Kobe era).

5 triple doubles though, 30/7/6/2.2 with 38% from 3, most complete version of Kobe besides his 2001 Playoffs.

Definitely the Frobe years for me. Kobe's #8 was the first non-Heat jersey I ever owned. His game wasn't as polished as it would later become, but he was more dynamic, explosive, and a better 2-way player. It was amazing to see a young player with that level of athleticism play so poised and controlled. Only Jordan, Lebron, and Wade are comparable in that regard.

His 17-47...... missing 30fga game against Boston in 2002-03 reg. season.

http://www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/200211070BOS.html

BOSTON (AP) -- Kobe Bryant heard the "Beat L.A.'' chants
bouncing around the FleetCenter and knew he was involved in
something special.

"I told Paul (Pierce) it was just like the old days,'' Bryant
said. "It felt like we were part of history. The old days of Larry
and Magic. But that leprechaun is still walking around the
rafters.'' ...(haha, Kobe is delusional)

Bryant had 41 points on an inconsistent night in which he shot
just 4-for-15 in the first half, scored 18 in the third quarter and
then missed 10 consecutive field-goal attempts down the stretch. He
was 17-for-47 from the field overall, and 0-for-8 from 3-point
range.

"I haven't seen anybody shoot 47 shots before, ever. There's a
limitation to what you can do,'' Lakers coach Phil Jackson said.
"I was telling the team, 'He carried us back into the game. Now
stop going to the well. It can dry up.'''

"You can't let him go out there and get an easy 41. He scored
41, but he had to take 47 shots,'' Pierce said. "He's their best
player. He has to carry most of the load because Shaq is not out
there.''

I liked those games when he would F around and get a triple double.

If he had grown up on Oscar Robinson, rather than Michael Jordan (especially second three-peat Jordan, who had to settle for more fadeaways), he would be a more obvious candidate for top-8 all-time for me. He's still top-12, but you have these reservations about Kobe that you don't have about Bird and Magic and Hakeem.

Kobe is one of the greatest passers of all-time when he decided that's what he was going to do. People forget this because we know him as the guy who was focused on getting his shots up. But plenty of guys have excelled him in shooting; few have excelled him in ballhandling and passing from the SG spot.

He didn't have Oscar's strength, but he had great footwork, and maybe the best jumper ever from 12-18 feet. He just got too greedy, spent too much time at the high stakes table, and lost more than he won (yes he scored 81, yes he led comebacks against the Blazers and Kings, but he also shot his team out of several series that they could have won). He should have been a high post distributor.

2008 for me; that was his best all-around year.
In terms of consistency and well-roundness.

He was a great leader; good teammate, clutch, great in the playoffs, great in the regular season, played great defense.

Not his most dominant season or his most athletic season, but his most complete season despite him not winning a title that year.
