If my opponent stops his dribble and has his back to me, am I allowed to reach around with one hand to cause a held ball, or is it a foul? Assume Im basically not touching him.

What about 2 hands? Wrapping but without touching the guy to cause a held ball.

If it's all ball and you're not touching him, it's not a foul.

that was my interpretation too. most of the people at the place I play at dont know that hand is considered part of the ball either.

while technically possible not to make contact, you will never find a case in competitive ball where a defender successfully gets the jump ball when the offensive dude has his back to him the whole time. it's almost always called a foul. think about it, you gotta give the guy a bearhug just to get both hands on the ball...

one hand is more likely but if dude is just holding it, as opposed to going up, again its pretty hard to get a jump ball from that position.

end of the day, i think you're just reaching here

well in my case, i was up against a skinny guy and I first got one hand on it cleanly which basically stopped/slowed the ball, and then i wrapped my second so as to tie it up. everyone said I fouled him, but I said that I didnt touch him and they told me its still a foul because you just cant wrap your arms around someone.

Wrapping your arms around an offensive player with his back towards you to hold the ball is a foul regardless if there is minimal contact. It will always get called.

if you get one firm palm on the ball and lock it into place, i've found you get the benefit of the doubt even if there's a bit of contact when the second hand reaches in... but i thought you meant you wrapped either arm around him from behind, like you were giving him a hug? that play would never be legal

if u got one hand in, turned him toward u or pivoted yourself around and got the other hand on the ball, assuming not much contact, easy jump ball imo

Just think about this, hand checking an offensive player with the ball is a foul. How much more with wrapping your arms around him?

I can't even think of an instance where I've seen a jump ball form in that situation. Normally it's a foul or you poke the ball loose. Not sure how you tie it up unless you got some mr fantastic arms and the person is a pole.

yeah so basically I had one hand pulling the ball into his chest and then I used my second hand to secure it, it wasnt like i straight up hugged him. hes like 5'10 135 and im around 6' so it wasnt hard to restrict him using one hand on the ball and then get both around him without contact

Wrapping your arms around an offensive player with his back towards you to hold the ball is a foul regardless if there is minimal contact. It will always get called.

I don't think this is true.

If you make any contact with his arms/shoulders/body, it's a foul. If you wrap around a guy, with no physical contact to his body EXCEPT the ball, it's not a foul.

edit: on second thought I see what you're saying. Any minimal contact will be called here. However if there is NO contact except on the ball itself, you are't fouling.
