View Full Version : Why Is Pau Not Getting MVP Consideration?

But a lot of people are on Westbrook's ****? :confusedshrug:
Doesnt have the record or the stats. When Lebron James is 4th on everyone's mvp list (or at least before chuckbrooks latest stretch) you know it's a tough year to get consideration.
CP3 should probably be in third now that I think about it.

Stats aren't really great. Record is solid but not amazing. Not flashy enough. No signature games.

MVP consideration is absolutely irrelevant. No one is winning other than Curry or Harden.

Because outside of the box score numbers he's really not that great, let alone MVP-level.

19/12/3/2 on the third East squad. Numbers are not mind blowing, but sneaky great. Thunder meanwhile are struggling to maintain the 8th seed. Durant went down for OKC of course, that's a big part of Russ' case but Rose went down for CHI and they've dealt with injuries to key guys all season (Butler, Gibson, Dunleavy have all missed numerous games). He's been consistent all year, has 50 double-doubles as of tonight.
Not saying he should be top 3 or anything, but you just never hear him even mentioned when people talk candidates.

2nd after Harden you mean.

Lets see:
- 3rd seed in a trash conference (record not nearly good enough)
- Very good player, but not a superstar; poor defender
- Not statistically dominant
Westbrook isn't a candidate either. Curry plays the same position and is playing objectively better ball and has a much better record. Hell, I'd put Chris Paul and Anthony Davis ahead of Westbrook too. Westbrook is fun, but he's the same exact player he's been for years now. He's still in that 5-10 range.
I mean, lets be real: Curry and Harden are the only two legit candidates, with Curry having a pretty healthy lead.

Third in the East. Red flag. 19/12? Meh. Westbrook got consideration for doing some crazy stuff with his triple doubles, but let's be real he aint winning shit. It's all relative.
Although I will say Pau Gasol is MUCH better than I thought he was. Dude was looking finished for about 4 years now after Dirk took him to town in 2011.
Still not a great defender, but good enough. Solid scorer. Great rebounding. I still think he would be better suited on the bench to control his minutes at his age and allow him to feast on second units, but cant say that he's been bad as a starter. Not mvp, but probably the best center in the East. Top 5 center in the nba.

Most years that would definitely be a red flag. But the teams ahead of the Bulls are a Hawks team that's been playing Spurs lite basketball and another LeBron super team in Cleveland. Chicago was ahead of the Cavs for a big chunk of the season before everyone went down with injury. They lost their franchise player and former MVP.
But again, not saying he would ever win... just pointing out it's weird that there hasn't been a peep about his work this season while Westbrook is actually being mentioned as an MVP candidate (even if he has no real shot at it) while his team is struggling to just secure a playoff spot and he's chucking like it's the end of the world.

He might not win an MVP, but Pau prove that he can carry a team into the playoffs without Kobe.

As always, Pau don't get the credit He deserves. Nothing new. Some posters have even denied dozens of times the fact that He is a lock is in the Hall of Fame. Honestly it makes me sad.

18.5/12/2 + less than 50 wins should not be getting MVP consideration.

Really? Who the hell would argue that? :confusedshrug:
ROY, 2X NBA champion, 5X all star, 3X all NBA, 18/9/3/2 career averages, and has a really great chance of finishing his career with 20K points/10K rebounds.
There's a few guys in the HOF with less accomplishments and talent than Pau. Don't know if he'll be first ballot, but he's getting in pretty comfortably, especially if he keeps playing at this level and goes on deep playoff runs. He looks like he has a good 2-3 elite/all star level seasons left in him barring injury. Kind of player who relies on polished skill instead of athleticism. Players like that age gracefully (see: Duncan, Tim).
EDIT- This is not even taking into account his International work. That alone would be enough to get him in.

So you believe Pau is a MVP candidate?

It is one out of two of Harden or Curry and Lebron as the longshot.

So Pau is now officially robbed of 1 MVP and 2 FMVPs so far? :biggums:

Averaging 19/12/2 on a 4th seed team in the current won't get you the MVP. If the Bulls were the 1st seed, then we could talk.

Kobe easily deserved that FMVP in 09. The 2010 one can be debated.

Thats known as the "playing with kobe" effect.
Its only so long you can carry a player and his team while the stans all give the other guy credit and blame you when stuff goes wrong. Anybody would get sick of that.

Obviously good enough to get to the playoffs. No one is denying Gasol's talent . He could carry a team to a lower seed quite easily in his prime but when it came time to roll with the big boys he needed someone to carry him. In this case, Kobe.

he was damn close to a 50/20 game this season...
But yeah, there is no argument for him above some candidates. He's Bull's MVP though.

Just like Kobe could carry a team to the lottery without a top big man. In this case, Shaq and Pau?

Was watching the Pistons-Bulls game last night.
TV announcer makes comment about Pau Gasol having MVP-type numbers.
My first thought: "Who on ISH is going to make a post slinging this as their own idea?"
TADA. The post comes 3 hrs after the game is done.

Nothing about his season is MVP worthy. His numbers are bigger than his impact really, although overall it can be considered a good season for him.
He has shrunk vs the toughest froncourts, his energy level and terrible help defense has been a constant concern. Bulls have been getting raped all season on the high PnR when Pau is involved, turning one of Chicago's main strengths into a glaring weakness.
At the beginning of the season Bulls tried to go to him early in games and the results were disappointing: his efficiency was subpar even though he was getting single coverage so he couldn't take advantage of his excellent passing skills. As the season advanced, he's been used in the high post more and the offense has looked better as a result. At his age, he has some trouble to get back to defense and working from the high post helps him out with that too.
