As of today (http://espn.go.com/nba/standings), only 5 teams in the east are above the .500 mark, compared to 10 in the West.

You have two NY teams that are messes. One team in Philly that needs no explanation at this point. Pistons has had internal struggles and baggage from previous poor decisions. Magic lacked a good coach this season. Pacers lost PG and Lance with no one else to really step it up. Lance hasn't worked out with the Hornets and the Hornets are no longer a surprise defensive team. Celtics lack overall talent. Heat has had injuries. Bucks lost steam after the trade deadline.

That's what happens when players like Anthony Davis get drafted to the west.

If Davis was drafted in the East, he would probably be crowned the next face of the league because he would probably be making deep play off runs every year. The team built around him right now could probably make the ECF yet in the west he isnt even making the playoffs.

Nothing. The best players are just drafted by the Western teams. Steph Curry, Harden (traded by OKC), LMA, Chris Paul (traded by NO), Blake Griffin, Tim Duncan, etc
The all star disparity is evident.

Plus the bad eastern teams get playoff spots instead of draft picks.

Toronto and Washington both cooled off too.

The West drafted and signed a bunch of big guys over the years to compete with Shaq. Once Duncan and Dirk are gone things will shift dramatically, however.

Besides that, the West has a bunch of quality teams that are ultimately pretenders which confuses people into thinking that the conferences really matter. Nobody in the West would make it out of the East except San Antonio and also potentially Golden State depending on matchups.

The importance of the conferences is overstated with the lone exception being the quality of the first and second round series... which I don't think is really the main gripe that people bring up when they talk about the disparity. They want to make up this imaginary idea that the collective roster of the entire Western team heading into the Finals has a bunch of black eyes and broken ribs and they're barely able to walk because of how oh so difficult their first and second rounds are. The chances of a champion coming out of the 7th or 8th seed of either conference in any given year is slim to none.

Within 5 years Orlando and Philadelphia will be on the major upswing while San Antonio and Dallas will fade into oblivion and things will balance out.

On a fun side note, the title has been won by a team with it's best player being a big or combination of two players being bigs/making up the best front court in the league every year after 98 with the exception of the 12 and 13 Heat. LeBron is that guy... just like Jordan was.

Well, the West Coast of the United States is FAR superior to the East Coast. We shouldn't be surprised that this translates to Basketball, as well.

Blame New York. They're suppose to be the big money city in the East.

Fluke
yea that's why they defeated the cheat that season by 20 twice and the refs rigged the semis for the pacers to win:rolleyes: keep hating. By the way, hawks are a fluke most definitely:no:

Since 2000 (15 seasons) the Knicks have made the playoffs a total of 5 times.

4 of those times, they have lost in the first round.
1 time they lost in the second round.

Since 2000, the Knicks winning percentage is 0.377

Their playoff record in that span is 9-21.

They've had 8 different coaches in 15 years.

Cleveland is really the only team from the east that has played well since the all star break... And they haven't been totally great either.

they have the best record in the league since AS break and the best point differential on their home court, where I'm not sure if they even lost once.

Well... Where would you like to start? Just mentioning the drafts between East and West gives a clear indication on what's wrong here.

In 2008, the Chicago Bulls won the Lottery over Miami and selected Derrick Rose. The same Derrick Rose who was the youngest league MVP, the same man who now has problems playing full seasons, let alone a few games. Miami, also a part of the East, chose Michael Beasley, who was MEANT to be something special, he wasn't, obviously. That draft year, the West got Kevin Love(obviously East now) and Westbrook who is now a premier name. On top of this, the West got Ibaka, Batum, DeAndre Jordan, Asik and Dragic.

In 2009, the Western conference has 7 out of the 10 worst records in the league. The West got the first 7 picks of this draft. The notable players the West got in this draft: Blake Griffin, James Harden, Steph Curry. And the East? DeRozen and Jeff Teague.

In 2010, the West got: Cousins and Bledsoe, while the East got: John Wall, Greg Monroe and Paul George. Bearing in mind this is the year where the 76ers picked Evan Turner at #2...

2011, East got Irving, Kemba Walker, Valanciunas and Jimmy Butler, who has come out of nowhere this season. The West managed to get Klay Thompson, the second part of the league leading Warriors team at #11. The other honourable mentions to the West would be Faried, Parsons, possibly Motiejunas, depending on your view.

2012, The Hornets with the 4th worst record in the league, get the #1 pick and take unanimous #1 pick Anthony Davis, who really does appear to be the future of the league. Damian Lillard gets picked #6, Bobcats(Kemba Walker), Wizards(Wall), Cleveland(Irving) and Sacramento(Evans) do not take him for obvious reasons and another strong PG heads out West. The East manages to get Beal and Drummond, but still...

2013 - There's no point discussing this draft yet. Both sides got some soon-to-be good players. Oladipo, Antetokounmpo, Gobert, Schroeder etc.

2014, lots of potential, still a lot of work to be done. The East might have won this draft by a fraction, who knows?

Other things besides huge amount of talent that the West has drafted compared to the East?

Dwight went to the West. Harden went from 6th man to potential MVP. Paul George is currently coming back from injury, as I mentioned, Rose.

Eastern teams that should look better next year, in regards to win/loss/talent+-:

Detroit
Bucks
76ers
Miami
Indiana
Magic
Boston

The teams that will probably improve with their current roster with more games and stable members:

Hawks
Cavs
Bulls (adding Rose too)

If the East gets 3 of the top5 picks this year, say 1/2/4 or whatever. Then the conferences might slowly be going towards balancing out. But you seem to forget that the West could have two all-star teams.

Anyway, so yeah...

That's what I think is wrong with the East. Poor/unlucky picks, talent not evolving/coping at the NBA level..

All the teams in the East are shitty or has shitty weather

Dwight on the record said doesn't wanna play for a cold weather city.

The Magic should of traded him to the bucks lol
