though i agree with your reasoning, i believe the original author was referring to a career in the modern NBA.

Definitely not my quote, but very close to it.

My reasoning is simple. Cousy was long considered the best guard in his era. I consider that to be the best indicator of talent. I call it "relative greatness". Relative to his competition, Cousy was an all time great.

Using that "logic", I can only come to the conclusion that Cousy, if planted in to ANY era, and given sufficient time to grow his game to the differences of that era, would excel. He likely would not be the greatest guard in any era, but in every era I believe he would be a top 10 guard.

There is definitely some "noise", with all these assumptions. But I can't think of a more fair way to compare players across decades.
