View Full Version : The 64 Celtics, 67 Sixers, 71 Bucks, and 72 Lakers would destroy any of the 80s team

I seriously doubt they'd "destroy" teams like the '86 Celtics or '87 Lakers

No team from the 60s would even make the NBA today.

Individual players would, but as a whole thoes teams would be destroyed. Its like comparing a F-4 Phantom to an F-22 raptor

Destroy is a bit much but it'd be foolish to think they couldn't give any 80's team trouble. My personal top two are the 86 Celtics and the 67 76ers

players from the 60's can't be expected to do the same athletic plays done in the 80's, when they weren't allowed to do the same moves and footwork that enable those athletic plays.

the concept of how the carrying and travelling restrictions of previous eras limited the athletic plays that guys could do, is discussed in this thread about "navigation efficiency"..

In the 50 GOATs celebration, he stood next to Wilt and he looked almost as tall. He must have been a very legit 7-footer, regardless of the "KG height" treatment he wanted to receive.

On topic, I'd made a thread some time ago arguing the same thing. I'd always found it hypocritical of people to believe that while an 80's team would fare just fine in the 2010's, a 60's or 70's team (70's teams having many players in their rosters who were active in the 80's) would somehow struggle in the 80's.
Do people similarly believe that a 60's or 70's NBA team would also struggle in the ABA, which was the first league that payed much attention to flash and dunks?

Not sure about the 71 Bucks, but I think all the others would be able to take it to six or seven. I still think the 86 Celtics were the best of all time. Also like the 87 Lakers and 83 Sixers.

I don't think the 90's Bulls could beat any of these teams more than 4 out of 10 times.

The 71 Bucks is probably the best team out of the 4 i mentioned. Prime Kareem, Oscar still elite. Clearly better than the 87 Lakers IMO. Followed infinitesimally closely by the 72 Lakers.

I have the '71 Bucks at #4 all-time, and behind the '72 Lakers, the '67 Sixers, and the '96 Bulls.

Their only weakness was at the PF position. Which they addressed the very next season, and even then, they still only went a total of 3-8 against the '72 Lakers, including a 2-4 record in the WCF's.

But they were a truly dominant team. I would argue that by the post-season, KAJ was at his absolute peak in '71. His Bucks team went 66-16, and had a +12.2 ppg scoring differential, but they were 65-11 going into the last six regular season games, when they coasted home (and had a staggering +13.6 margin at the time.) They then went 12-2 in the post-season, and outscored their opposition by a record margin of +14.5 ppg.

Four teams you've never seen play when they were around...MAYBE seen about 20 mins clips encompassing them altogether...how is this an OPINION OF YOURS? You are recycling what you heard and passing it off as your opinion.

I doubt that you ever saw Kareem live in your lifetime. And likely not a prime Bird or Magic, either. What is your opinion of them?

That Philly 1967 team is probably the best ever. I really like the 1971 Bucks too. I think a young Kareem would be too dominate. A prime Wilt even more dominate. That Philly team had great individual players. They would not have struggled.
