View Full Version : Didn't the new rules make passing easier?

It is common knowledge that the new rules in 2005 made passing and cutting easier.

Not only that, but the 3-point shooting spaces the floor and forces the defense to cover more ground and essentially defend a bigger court, which also makes passing easier.

So if passing and cutting is easier than previous eras, why overrate Lebron's passing in comparison to Jordan's?

I'm not even talking about the fact that lebron is the most ball-dominant non-point guard of all time, which also reduces the integrity of his assist numbers compared to Jordan - I'm only talking about how the rules and floor-spacing enhanced passing and cutting for everybody, so this is a built-in advantage that Lebron gets that Jordan didn't.

Jordan didn't get any childs-play assists in a neatly spaced-out court that you can see coming from a mile away:

Jordan's assists required more ability because defenders were in closer proximity:

According to the NBA, they did:

Stu Jackson: "....our desired result is to get a game that once again is based on passing, cutting, player movement, and ball movement. A game that hopefully produces fastbreak opportunities because that is the way our game should be played."

"All changes were passed with the idea of trying to encourage more free flowing five-man offenses, open up the lanes for cutting and passing and speed up the game by encouraging teams to get into their offenses quicker."

right, that was the thread where it was first revealed that lebron dominated the ball as much as point guards and was the most ball-dominant non-point guard in the league, and of all time.

thanks to that thread, we can all look at lebron's 6.3 assist average in the proper light - average for a point guard and ball-dominator, barely more than off-ball players bird and jordan, and half that of the real best-passing ball-dominators like magic, nash, stockton, cp3, kidd, etc.

and thanks to that thread, we now understand how while lebron's perception as a passer has been aided by a career of dominating the ball like a point guard, the only time jordan got to dominate the ball like a point guard was when coach Doug Collins moved him over to point guard for the last 24 games of the 1989 season (http://www.complex.com/sports/2014/01/michael-jordan-point-guard-in-1989-posted-triple-double-10-of-11-games), at stint in which MJ averaged 30 points, 9 rebounds and 11 assists (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jordami01/gamelog/1989/#322-345-sum:pgl_basic).

So based on this stint, we can see that Jordan was a better passer as a ball-dominator, in addition to already being a better passer as an off-ball player, which makes MJ a better passer overall, in addition to playing in a no-spacing environment where it was more difficult to pass and cut (as stated in OP).
