Every coach in every level of basketball will tell you to play defense with your feet. It is consider lazy to use your hands when you have to move your feet and get between the offensive player and the basket.

That era was horrible from a fundamental and defensive standpoint.

The rule back in the day was that any part of the defenders body that is on the offensive player, is part of the offensive players' body.

It benefited any offensive player who had an explosive first step especially in triple threat position. Hand checkers usually aren't disciplined enough with their footing to be able to keep up as they have a divided focus on using their hands first as a reaction. You better have extremely strong and quick hands/arms if you wanna keep up with Jordan.

Illegal defense restrictions were lifted in 2001 (zone, without the 3 sec lane rule, had been employed in the league for decades). Kobe had his 50% shooting series in 2002. In '00, he shot 37%, in '01- 41.5%.

Also, it's not Kobe alone who said that, players and coaches as well. I just used Kobe's quote against the OP since he is a Kobe fan. Look at the stats Don posted. Perimeter scoring has become easier due to no handchecking rule. Result = scoring averages of perimeter players bloomed. Put prime MJ in today's era. He would absolutely tear the league. If you can't touch him, good luck stopping him.

One thing people ignore about handchecking is that the offensive player could spin out of the post and use their off hand to force their defender behind them. If you watch MJ highlights out of the post you can see it in action.
