View Full Version : Diaw reaches agreement with Spurs

Free-agent forward Boris Diaw has reached agreement on a three-year, $22.5 million contract to return to the defending NBA champion San Antonio Spurs, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Diaw, 32, transformed himself into an indispensable part of the Spurs' championship fiber and his return was considered a vital part of management's plan to compete for a sixth franchise title next season.

The third year of Diaw's deal is partially guaranteed, sources said. Diaw is guaranteed $18.5 million over the first two years of the deal, sources said.

Spurs general manager R.C. Buford and Diaw's agent Doug Neustadt completed the deal Sunday, sources said.

The deal includes protections for the Spurs' salary-cap space should the organization change direction in the next few years and move toward a rebuild after the Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili era.

Splitter AND Diaw getting almost 10 mil/yr deals? wtf spurs. I mean, they are good players but...damn. At least Diaw's is more like 7 mil which is probably somewhat fair. Then again, I guess this is the whole Chandler argument all over again right? Do you overpay to keep the chip team together or spend money elsewhere? I guess we're about to find out how it turns out.

They are both worth it though...and especially on the Spurs.

22.5 by 3 years with almost all of it paid out in the first two isn't bad for him what so ever. Guy played his off last year and was pivotal playoff player.

Damn, wasn't expecting that big of a contract...but needless to say I'm pleased. There isn't another Boris in the league.

It also helps that they were able to steal Mills back for just 4 mil/yr. That is possibly top value in the league (not including rookie contracts).

So they've essentially secured their entire championship roster. Great news for any fan who enjoyed watching their incredible run last year. That ball movement was exquisite...

Love it. Retained a big man with great handles, court vision, defense, and range. Hopefully his body keeps up.

Greed is good in sports... I hope they spend some or all of their MLE with another impact signing. Not sure who it should be, but they proved this year that quality depth is incredibly valuable if you have a brilliant coach...

Not sure why people are calling this big money. It really isn't for a player this valuable. It's only slightly higher than the MLE and only slightly higher than what Jodie Meeks just got. It's a good deal for both parties.

Big contract, but he deserved it for his playoff performances.

A repeat is on the cards.

They saved so much on Patty that they can afford this. We'll see what the rookie can do in his likely limited minutes.

Not really, if they could dump Splitter they probably would. He and Duncan don't play together well.

Against the heat they dont, against everyone else who run a traditional pg/big man pnr, tiago's a defensive beast.

Yes they are fine defensively but the offense isn't good.

Splitter is needed for defense. Zach, Gasol x2, Howard, Jordan/Blake - all in the West.

Didn't expect such a big payout for Diaw - guess that's this market for you. Riley gonna find it hard to fill out MIA's roster. At least with Diaw and Mills, Spurs KNOW what they're getting. Wonder why the interest in P. Gasol. Shouldn't the Spurs be saving their money to pay Kwahi?

Glad to see the whole team back - hoping for that elusive repeat.

Considering how immense of an impact he made within that system on the biggest stage in the league...

How the hell is a 3 year contract, for $7M a year, overpaying :wtf:

Now Splitter, that mother****er is overpaid

Does it matter if they overpay? They will have to rebuild after Duncan and Pop are gone anyway.
