From the Open court special on dunks
http://youtu.be/Ia2_zO4irsc?t=36m27s
Not an answer Ernie was prepared for as the episode revolved around showcasing dunk contest dunkers and flashy open court players but the Doc's reasoning was sound. Wilt was perhaps the most prolific dunker in the game's history. The Doc is one of my favorite students of the game, he always has a well thought out answer when it comes to talking about who were the best to ever do this or that and it isn't always what you expect it to be. Also calls out T-mac at the end of the episode that he needs to get in the back to study some film of who played before him because he seemed like a fish out of water, didn't know about any players prior to his own era.

in terms of what? the ability to dunk ( the act of dunking ) i.e. just specifically putting the ball in the basket
i dunno maybe.
in terms of creativity? style? not on his best day.. he wouldnt even beat shaq in a dunk contest
ive seen shaq do a 180 before

i think they all pretty much threw mj under the bus to stroke drj and neke cause they were there... pretty stupid.. tmac was the only guy there who had an actual opinion

That's from a dunk contest when dude was talking about in game. It's also from arguably the worst contest of all time and Kobe was pedestrian, at best.
I have Kobe top 5 dunker but the best? haha

Heh. Dr. J was giving a shout out the centers basically with that comment. He gave a shoutout to Shaq and Kareem, saying they don't get enough credit. But you'll never hear anyone say Shaq is a better dunker than Michael Jordan.
Did you notice when Dr. J did say Wilt, Ernie had to change to "stylist" dunkers. Because that's what people really mean when they say about the best dunks or dunkers and not efficient dunkers. As Dr. J said, Wilkins shot a lot of jumpers, but Wilt had "dunk shots".
Most of them of their answers a pretty well thought out. Kenny explanation was my favorite. Most of them said that Dr. J was the best dunker of all timer.
Their answers aren't right or wrong. IMO, it's Vince Carter. He had the best combination of power, creativity, style and vert. And him dunking on much bigger games than him also adds to legacy. And also, he jumped over a 7 footer in game at the Olympics, right? Along with his other dunks? Imo, he's the GOAT dunker in the NBA.

seriously.. its not even debatable..
just cause a guy was first to do something doesnt make him automatically the best. and dr j wasnt even the first..
baylor was slingin high flyin dunks in his time. and dr j molded himself after him
so everyone there can lick balls except tmac
no one touches vince... the thing about it is... nique/erving/mj could all do dunks comparable to each other
but none of them can do the dunks vince did. he just brought it on a whole different level..
the full arm extension. the hand time. the big hand palm
vince was all 3 of those guys in one. and he jumped half a foot higher while doing way harder dunks
jumping clean over a 7 footer? those other 3 guys wouldnt dream of it

i said kobe was the best in game nba dunker ( i.e. posters, facials, in traffic )
vinces top 5 dunks ever are
#1 olympics over 7 footer
#2 off backboard windmill in celebrity game
#3 360 windmill dunk contest
#4 bounce beteen legs dunk contest
#5 elbow dunk dunk contest
hes the goat dunker. but in games he was sort of a windmill repetitive guy that over did it like jason richardson
you never knew what kobe was gonna do... and you never knew when he was gonna do it. made his more exciting.

vince just never really had that opportunity very often.

I personally find Kobe's dunks don't have the fluidity of Jordan and Carter.
I personally put Pippen ahead of Kobe, and maybe 5-10 others.
I'd say Kobe's shooting is > his dunking.
As for OP, depends on the definition. Shaq or Wilt are the greatest dunkers ever by some definitions of it.

This is your criteria, and you have Kobe > Jordan as a dunker?
:facepalm
My god dude, it's just sad. The delusions of the Kobetard fanbase really know no bounds. It's such a struggle for me to ignore how far-fetched you guys are in your opinions and manage to still appreciate Kobe Bryant as a basketball player. It's like you guys are trying to ruin that for the rest of us.
:facepalm
Kobe had a wider variety of styles to his dunks, but Jordan got more air, dunked from farther out, threw it down with more authority and force, emphasized his dominance more, and looked better doing it. Kobe had a way of gliding through the air with finesse, but Jordan was like a weapon of mass destruction above the rim. The dunk was simply more dangerous for Jordan than it was for Kobe, due to his superior athleticism and courage.
The most important aspect to this comparison is how Jordan was better at dunking ON people. When it came to using the dunk as a legitimate weapon to beat a defender, Jordan > Kobe and...
... it's not close.

The idea that Kobe is a better in game(or anywhere) dunker than Vince Carter should be beyond even ISH.
Nobody is a better dunker than Vince carter and if anyone is it sure as **** isn't Kobe.
The best dunks of Kobes life approach Vinces best in New Jersey past his prime.
Kobe might have 3 dunks in his career on the level of Vince on Zo. Might. Big big might.

Reason to degrade a guy's opinion on Pippen.
You're either very inconsistent, bipolar or just forget what you post and then always have to spin the shit you write in order to fit your agenda.
And ofc Wilt, Shaq and the likes are goat dunkers in a way. You could give them the ball by the basket and they'd dunk it which is close to a 100% shot.
I guess that's Dr. J's perception here.

I'm a minute into the video, I don't think he was talking about style. I think he means that Wilt has scored the most points on dunks in the history of the NBA, or the higher percentage of his shots came from dunks more so than anyone else ever in the game.
Edit: Then he said in terms of style, it's between Dominique and Vince, and also threw in MJ in there.
He didn't say anything controversial.

Thanks for the link, I did not see this when it initially aired. I was not entirely impressed with the last portion about each player's opinion on "best dunker of all-time". I actually agree with kenneth a little bit in terms of picking up on a feel of each panelist sort of trying to pay homage to the others in the room with them.
That said, I view dunking as an artform, so it's tough to say who's right and who's wrong. If someone's definition of best dunker of all-time was simply "man who dunked most frequently", perhaps it'd make sense for Wilt to be in the discussion.
Sidenote, I completely understand and respect David Thompson's place as dunking pioneer, but I admit I've never seen a ton of footage that'd lead me to believe he was anywhere in the discussion for best dunker of all-time. I'd say that tip jam of his was likely the best I've seen, and it's great - particularly when accounting for that era - but I haven't seen a ton of other clips that caught my attention. Anyone have links, aside from the standard top ten David Thompson YouTube video? Rare stuff?
What about J-rich? He's among the top best IMO.He's a tough case to judge. I think he's clearly amongst the best of all-time (and one of my personal favorites) but perhaps his lack of versatility limited him a little bit. The dunks he did complete (in-games) were spectacular, with wonderful style. But they were all primarily either a windmill, 360, double clutch reverse, or occasional surprise tip-dunk on somebody's head.
And to be clear, all those dunks were usually insane, but I think his inability to leap off one foot alongside a lack of length and hand size that reduced his opportunities to posterize opposing players like Nique, probably plays a role in Richardson usually hunkering down in the "amongst the greatest" category and on the outside looking in of any "absolute greatest" talks.
