The NBA was integrated in 1950. Earl Lloyd, Nat Clifton, Chuck Cooper and Hank DeZonie were the first four to play in the league in 1950. Donald Barksdale, Walter Dukes, Ray Felix and a few others came around a few years later in the early 50s
Of course you still only had two African-American players per team, so they could room together. And players still had to deal with legalized discrimination/segregation off-the-court, so that it affected where players or teams could eat dinner (for those teams which stood together with their black teammates), what hotels they could stay in, etc.

Were the Celtics the first team with 3 blacks? Russell and the Jones boys?

Willie Naulls. He started in the place of Tommy Heinsohn who was injured.

I should have said that with the exception of Boston, other NBA teams had a small even number of black players during this era.

A couple of players from the Eastern League may have been stars, Like Hal Lear and John Chaney.
