Sorry, but I'm not sure anyone's freethrows ever looked worse than Wilt's. Wilt threw those things up without a care in the world - other than to be done with it.

Yes, he shot them that way perhaps until '67 or sometime thereafter, so he shot them underhand both his best pro FT% season ('62 @ .613) and also up to for sure his 2nd worst season ('67) at .414%, and perhaps he even shot that way in '68 too I just can't recall seeing him shoot free throws this way that season - and that was his worst season at below 40%. And maybe that's what prompted him to switch to the carefree looking overhand style that he used with the Lakers.

got any pre-broken-kneecap Elgin Baylor?

what about Tommy Heinsohn?

Early days Earl Monroe dude was incredible in Baltimore. They had like 5 point guards lol Don Ohl, Johnny Egan, and then they had Kevin Loughery and Jack Marin at forwards and old Ray Scott, which those guys are totally forgot. yeah. Got any early days Baltimore Bullets?

a little bit later on, any game between Wilt Chamberlain's Lakers & Chicago Bulls or the Bucks. Those were some incredible games. {edit: if you had some of those esp. from 1971 or 1972 you could see how Wilt would glide for 3 1/2 quarters and then Bill Sharman would talk to him for a timeout. They would walk along the sidelines and when you saw that, the game was over. At that point Wilt would wipe his face off with a towel and you would see sparks fly at that point.} San Diego Clippers. Or what about early Suns when they had Connie Hawkins? Fly Hawk!! That man was immensely skilled offense.
If you have now this is 70s but if you have some games where Bill Russell was doing color commentary I would like to watch some of them. Russell is the prototype of all great color commentary and better than almost everything out there today. He would watch teams for a few minutes and then he would just have this kind of pronouncement about what each team was trying to do........... and then he would just fall silent and you could just watch it unfolding exactly as he said it would. At times he was just literally astounding accuracy in what he saw happening.

I'd like to see Bob Lanier & Cowens - some of the actual games between those two guys were such a pure intensity you felt like the stands were going to catch on fire.
Friend of mine used to have a big old Zenith console tv with the built in hi-fi. We would drag that monster out onto his patio and sit under an umbrella with a bucket of something real cold to drink and watch games. During the commercial breaks he would crank out the Led Zeppelin or Jimi or Beatles and we'd be listening to Whole Lotta Love and watching some stupid commercial about a 1973 Buick. Anyhow by mid-70s it was like watching Ali & Frazier sometimes. Lot of fights. There were a couple of games that just got into all out brawls and the tv station would just change the program to something totally random, like, skiing or something else. Women's swimming, or ice skating in Norway.

But Lanier and Cowens is one in particular that we still talk about. There were 3 or 4 times they just threw down. They would go at it so bad that refs, coaches, and both entire teams would be standing between them trying to cool things off. Lanier was physically monstrous and would beat guys down on the court. Actually would hit them with his fists which, NO basketball player will ever hurt his hands. That man got thrown out of a lot of basketball games. But Dave Cowens would never let that happen to any Celtic. He was always ready to throw down on Lanier and did. Lanier was a big ol' boy but he ended up being Dave's b!tch for like 10 years.

I have an certain Elgin Baylor dunk on my mind, but I don't know which game. It was on a purple gold jersey already and on the break, I don't think he posterized someone from my memory(saw it on tv like 15 years ago). He ran from right to left on the screen iirc.

Edit: My mind tricked me. I think those are the white jerseys, but I found it on your mix.

Haha, yeah I was totally stunned that it looked so different from what was planted into my memory. I just had his motion remembered. I even added colours that weren't there and until this post I never noticed it was Bill Russell.

That dunk made me dig into bios of older players when I first saw it.

Cheers

Russell's TEAMs have the RINGS. Wilt out-voted Russell in First Team All-NBA Selections by a 7-2 margin in their ten years in the league together. He was already considered the better player in his ROOKIE season, when he won BOTH the ROY AND the MVP. And by the mid-60's he was ROUTING Russell in MVP balloting. Very few at the time (and probably even including Russell and Auerbach) believed Russell was the better player.

Of course, we know that Wilt SINGLE-HANDEDLY carried FAR inferior rosters to near monumental upsets of the greatest TEAM DYNASTY in NBA history...AND, when he FINALLY had an equal supporting cast (and that was healthy), he WIPED the floor with Russell and his eight-time defending champions.

Wilt = GOAT.

BOTH as the MAN. He won the FMVP in '72,. and would have won it in '67 had the award existed.

Clearly, the most dominant player of all-time.

And Russell NEVER outplayed Wilt in ANY of their EIGHT post-season series...and in fact, probably didn't outplay him in more than a handful of their 49 post-season games. BUT, I could post games in which Chamberlain just ANNIHILATED Russell in their post-season H2H's.

These are great. I'm enjoying this thread quite a bit. Digging the Bob Pettit and Connie Hawkins clips, in particular. What era is that Hawkins dunk from? And if I may ask, what are you using to create your gifs?
I just use my video editing program, adobe premiere pro

Go ahead post these games and series in which Wilt was "dominated." And I want his opposing centers numbers, as well.

Wilt lost so many times in the playoffs being the biggest most athletic and skilled center in his time and you tell me he is the GOAT? What's your excuse? He didn't have help?

When Russell retired Wilt still only won one more ring even when he had enough help to get over the hump. What's your excuse? Injuries? I thought he was so strong a lion couldn't even scratch him?

Being the great scorer he was, why did his coaches ask him to score less? I thought he was unstoppable? What's your excuse? Bad coaching? Or maybe he just wasn't really that dominant and his empty stats translate to alienating his team making them useless in the long run?

Hawkins had an enormous wingspan and huge hands. The ball looked like a grapefruit in his hands. And he was the KING of the "Windmill Dunk", too.

Again...where are your EXAMPLES? And not just ONE, either, but SEVERAL. I can point out single games, series, and playoffs in which EVERY GOAT has crumbled...LEAST of all, Chamberlain.

If Wilt was this "choker" carrying LAST-PLACE rosters to game seven two and one point losses against the greatest dynasty in the history of the sport, and just murdering Russell in the process...

then MJ really CHOKED against the 85-86 Celtics, when despite his 44 ppg average, and playoff record 63 point game, his TEAM was SWEPT. Obviously it was Jordan's fault, right?

GTFO with your pathetic NONSENSE!

Why do you keep bringing up MJ? I don't excuse him for losing against the Celtics. Yet when he finally had enough help he won 6 out of 6. When Wilt had help, he won only 2. You say Wilt had last place rosters? Really it's always anyone else's fault but Wilt when it comes to your stanning ass. He had help in the 2nd half of his career yet didn't dominate enough. That's your GOAT? He also claimed to have slept with 20000 women... :facepalm

Get a life lauber, the playoffs is on maybe it would do you good to watch today's players instead of day dreaming about your choking idol.

CHOKING? Again, where are your EXAMPLES? And again, please post his opposing center's numbers (virtually ALL of them were HOFers BTW.)

CHOKING...KAJ, Bird, Kobe, and certainly Hakeem (by YOUR standards.) And yes, MJ could never beat the Celtics and could only beat a fading Piston team one time in four tries (and his numbers declined significantly in those four series BTW.)

Tell me about Wilt's "help" in his '68 EDF's.
Tell me about how his cast of goofballs performed in '69, and if you include West, give me Baylor's stats, as well. And keep in mind it was Wilt's COACH who had West taking 30 FGAs, Baylor 20 FGAs, and Wilt TEN FGAs in that series (and BTW, Wilt wasn't even on the floor in the last five minutes of the game seven two point loss, in a game in which he wiped Russell all over the floor.)
Give me his teammates shooting percentages in both game seven of the '69 Finals and game seven of the '70 Finals (BTW, Chamberlain shot .875 and .625 from the field in both of those two games.)
Tell me again how well West and Baylor played in the '71 playoffs.
And even when Wilt carried his '72 Lakers to a dominating title, his teammates collectively shot .414 from the floor in the playoffs. Oh, and give me their "first option's" (West's) FG% in that Finals while you are at it.
And give me his teammates numbers in the '73 Finals, particularly West's.

Stats? It doesn't mean much even if I researched the numbers without actually watching the games. I'm sure you didn't. I can break down a game footage for you if you provide it. Who knows maybe I'll change my mind about your choking idol.

There IS footage of Chamberlain on YouTube. How about his game five of the '72 Finals? With one badly sprained wrist, and the other FRACTURED, he DOMINATED the game, en route to leading his team to a title. 24 points, on 10-14 shooting, with 29 rebounds (the entire NY team had 39 BTW), and 8 blocks.

And the REALITY was, that was FAR from Wilt's best post-season game, or series. A prime Chamberlain was routinely hanging 40 and even 50+ point playoff games. All while crushing his opposing centers on the glass, and dramatically reducing them to worthless shot-jackers from the field.

Game Five of the '72 Finals is on YouTube in multiple parts. Go ahead and break it down. And, I will tell you this. After you watch it, you will ask yourself, why didn't Wilt score 40 in that game...because he clearly could have. He was unstoppable.

He not only blocked eight shots, he was called for a very questionable goal-tend in which he jumped out of the gym (at age 35, over 300 lbs, and on a surgically repaired knee.)

And he OWNED the glass in that game, as well. Again, 29 rebounds (out of a total of 106 available, and the Knicks only had 39 as a team.)

72 is the year he won, there is nothing to break down because he won it. How bout a series he lost where he had help? 69 had a 4thQ in YT and I saw him sit down while West was busting his ass trying to win the game, in Wilt's free throw attempt he didn't even look like he was trying. To be fair we don't have complete footage so find one and let's see if your boy brought it.

Yeah no way a 7-2 (7-3 in today's NBA), 300 lb, 7-8 wing-span, sprinter and high jump champion, and unquestionably the strongest basketball player of all-time, and with skills that blow away a peak Dwight Howard...would make an NBA team today.

:facepalm

The REAL question would be...would Wilt average a 40-20 in TODAY's NBA, and against arguably the weakest center crop in NBA history?

Post some plays from Wilts era and plays from Lebron, Westbrook, Rose, Kobe, etc. back to back.

It will look like you are watching two different sports.

Great players for their time though.

Here is just one player that played college ball in the late 60's, and was in the NBA in the early 70's...
