View Full Version : Kobe bryant confronts Dwight on his passive aggressive whispering

STATUTORY
01-23-2013, 06:27 PM
They held a clear-the-air team meeting before Wednesday morning's shoot-around, with Kobe Bryant very directly asking Dwight Howard if he disliked playing with the long-time Lakers star.

Nash, in his first season with the Lakers, said he didn't care how they played, whether it was via pick-and-roll or fastbreak or whatever. He just wanted everybody to be comfortable in the system. It was seen as a sacrifice by Nash, who played four seasons under D'Antoni's run-and-gun offense in Phoenix and won two NBA MVP awards while doing it.

Bryant also spoke up, acknowledging he could be "hard to play with" and asking Howard if that bothered him.

Howard's answer was unclear, though he did not engage Bryant in nearly as vocal a manner as Bryant engaged him.

"He didn't go back at Kobe," said the person who witnessed the meeting.

They needed to air it out with each other weeks ago. That's what teams do, they communicate. The fact that they obviously have not been communicating until now, shows how deep the problems are. I hope they can work it out quickly enough to give them an actual shot at salvaging this season.

Being passive-aggressive is one thing...it's not an attractive or good quality, but it doesn't make you a piece of garbage....acting like a piece of garbage, through a method of passive-aggressive behavior...that makes you a big piece of garbage. For him to not answer Bryant and to not "engage" in dialogue the way Kobe did...sounds bad. He's saying it starts with him tho...so let's see what happens.

Meeting will probably be quite helpful in establishing an identity for the team. Dwight seemed to imply that he will focus more on the defensive end, getting the team to become at least a respectable defensive club. Kobe will probably ease up on shots for a bit and look to let Nash control the flow of the game. Even d'Antoni seemed to suggest tweaking his beloved system and slowing down the pace and that will help transition defense, getting Dwight more post touches and controlling Kobe's to volume shoot (to a degree). More methodical offense will lead to stability on defense. I'm expecting a nice 10-3ish record over their next dozen+ games and finally moving into real contention for the 7th-8th seed.

If you think about it, it's very much like the Kobe/Shaq but the shoe is on the other foot.

Kobe was young upcoming + contract ending, able to force Buss' hand by demanding to trade the older dominant player or he would leave.

Howard seen as the future franchise player to Mitch Kupchak/Buss + contract ending, if they want to keep their future young star...they need to cater to his demands or he walks.

In before mad laker fans say just let him walk and they would rather the empty cap space. Difference is, Kobe has a no trade clause so it is harder to get rid of him or force him into retirement. Shaq had 3-4 years prime (9-10 years total) left while Kobe has 2-3 years tops.

Maybe nothing they say or do can keep Dwight. But the future sure does look bleak for these Lakers.

I have a good memory. I remember stuff quite clearly up to about 90 and 91 ...

89 stuff is hazy, but thats when I first picked up a ball. Dad taking me to the gym with him ... I was learning the sport quick. Was playing YMCA youth league ball by 5 or 6 years old.

Kobe always said his favorite player was Magic and team the Lakers. Kobe's said he started learning, watching, and playing the game at 3 or 4 years old.

Dwight might be slightly younger than me, LeBron is my age, maybe half a year older.

When I was 11 I was a ball boy for the Dallas Mavericks. Even got to meet Magic when he made his brief comeback at the end of the season. Our family was friends with Jason Kidd.

DH doesn't have all the leverage. If he walks he'll be leaving a lot of money on the table. His best bet is to have the Lakers do a S&T for him unless he doesn't care about the money at all.

Seems like a few players are leaving money on the table to go where they can win/are happy and DH certainly isn't winning in LA nor is he happy (which seems very important to him). He's got enough leverage and seems immature enough to just forego the extra money and stick it to Kobe/LAL. Lakers will have lost Bynum and will be screwed for years (no way to replace that talent) if he decides to walk.

Regardless of what some of you Laker fans think, Pau hasn't suddenly lost his skill (after his Olympics performance) and DH is still not completely healthy. This experiment is not working (at least not with D'Antoni at the helm). Do you think other teams aren't willing to take a chance that DH will get completely healthy and go back to his Orlando form in a place where he's happy? Anywhere will be better than the circus in LA and as far as winning - there are 20 teams out there with better records than LAL.

This is exactly the reason why I was baffled when the Lakers hired Mike D'Antoni as coach, and as a Lakers fan, its hard to look at the team right now, but I am glad that this is happening because Jim Buss clearly cant run the team.

Phil would have been an excellent choice regardless of what he demanded because he is a coach that is respected by all players and therefore needed in this situation to deal with all the egos. Mike clearly couldnt do that in New York, so what made management think he was going to be able to do it in LA is still something that I dont understand. Even if they didnt hire Phil back, Mike wasnt the right choice.

However, the coach is the least of our problems, and I am not using it as an excuse, but situations such as these do really show how great of a coach Phil was when it came to managing all the egos and getting everyone on the same page.

Dwight Howard is done. He's never going to get there mentally until it's too late.

When the trade went down I thought Kobe Bryant of all people could straighten his ass out.

Turns out he's a lost cause with a high price tag.

In my opinion all of this Dwight drama just further illustrates how great of a coach Stan Van Gundy was. He kept Dwight in line as well as you can and created a system that fit to Dwight's strengths. D'Antoni is a terrible coach at handling strong personalities.

Seriously what could have happened if CP3 was traded to the Lakers. Is Kobe willing to have CP3 be the leader of the team? And if not, is CP3 going to stand up against him?

Cp3 is not a cry babe, he is a leader.
