Obviously a 17 minute mix is a tad long for casual fans but some of you might really enjoy it - shows what a complete player West was

http://youtu.be/OEzwR1a8KuA

West's pure jumper and clutch - 0:08 and on
West's hook-shots, dunks, layups, inside game - 5:41 and on
West's defense/steals/blocks - 9:30 and on
West's assists and teamwork - 12:54 and on

And I like the 3 point line, but it's interesting to see how different the game is played without it.

Anytime I make an NBA history related video or thread I am not surprised that sometimes I'll get a random anonymous hate-neg, 1 star, or video dislike. It's almost like there is a poster or two out there who literally hates NBA history (particularly if Wilt's era is involved). Either that, or they don't like me (or both). My guess is they probably dislike me more than any of the videos/threads I've made - because maybe I was an asshole to them in a discussion at some point. Either that or they dislike my agenda of trying to legitimize and spark interest in the 60's and 70's - they'd much rather that continue to be written-off as the irrelevant dark-ages of the NBA I guess? :confusedshrug:

I invite the person who 1 starred this thread to come in here and speak their mind

This isn't the first time you've said this so I'll say again - I've been working to make (about half) the clips real-time speed from slow-motion stock. If I didn't do it the highlights would be 30+ minutes long. Again, my aim on all the clips is real-time speed - and I use the clips that are actually in real-time as my reference. It is mostly as easy as making a 100% speed, 200%. Simple rounded numbers, virtually impossible to mess up. I do not speed clips up so as to create the illusion of superiority, in fact I cringe when I think footage is too fast because it looks cheesy - if you've got a problem with a particular clip - point it out so I can fix the damn thing - don't make a broad sweeping generalization that my intent is to deceive people. Your this close to becoming the first person on my ignore list because you seem to always go out of your way to give me a hard time, you never seek a legitimate discussion or offer helpful input.

My video not only has clips straight from that game it even has the audio still intact - ever hear audio sped up even a little bit? It raises in pitch dramatically. I hate to put anyone on ignore list but your going on mine now - sorry.

that's not real time, that's a framing nightmare of 40 year old film or at the very least 30 years before they digitized it.

do you know what happens to the framing of a film when it sits in a can for decades?

I mean I hear you about 'sanitizing' old film but Cavs is far closer to true than that yellowed, faded crap. At least his doesn't have black spots from broken edges of film. What he is doing is legitimate and he's to be congratulated for making a record of history.

In these days of internet, cable tv and all the rest, it's hard for people today to understand the sheer excitement of a basketball game. Nowadays you can see like 5 or more games in a weekend. Back then it was the event you looked forward to all week.

It's very strange to remember those days and then think about typiing onto a freaking webpage!! but when Jerry West ran onto the court the entire arena lit up somehow. He had a huge charisma, like a movie star really, and no other player really had that kind of flair, not even my personal favorite of that time, which was Clyde Frazier.

Jerry West opened up the entire western half of the US to pro basketball, him and Baylor. You'd see those two flashing down the court and the ball would just be a blur, back and forth, like playing catch with a light beam. Arenas filled up all over the country to see Logo. He was the face of the league in those days, out west he was.

Pistol Pete was playing back then, late 60s, and he was skilled maybe more than anybody ever in terms of ball-handling and pure scoring, pure offense. But Jerry West ate him for dinner time after time.

JW was faster AND quicker than anybody in the NBA. Sam Jones was a race horse, and Earl Monroe was real quick all right but Logo was the man, the fastest. There's been guys with a quicker first step - not many - but to this day I've never seen anyone get from the perimeter to the basket quicker than Jerry West.
Yeah he was somethin all right.

How is that real time? Humans don't just move like that in general. Refs are suddenly lightning quick. Bench guys and fans jump unnaturally fast. Let alone the players who all seem perfectly capable of going Allen Iverson speed when they feel like it.

31.9 over nine finals, 27 season average, 29 in the playoffs, Mr Clutch, being the logo, number of all star and first team defensive awards, only player to get MVP in the finals in a losing cause. He also shot considerably better than the league average in the 60s as a guard. His 34 a game in the 1964 playoffs on 51.5% shooting over 14 games, including 7 against the Celtics, is pretty damn good.

West has a case.
He has the same case as Kobe has for best SG, none.

Cavs, great video. Very convincing. No more arguments about West's left hand dribble, I guess.:lol Do you think his game looks a bit like one of the other great but under rated scorers in NBA history, Andrew Toney?

You can't watch that video and not come away thinking that he was a truly exceptional player. He's the embodiment of excellence at the guard position in almost every way.

Clearly, Jerry West was the better overall player. In the reg season AND in the playoffs.

Jerry West is a nasty secret weapon in NBA 2K. I hope they never get rid of those classic teams. They actually serve as a great vehicle for introducing folks to how the old school players used to get down.

His release is lightning quick.

Little trick of his i recall reading somewhere, long ago. Before his shot he would pound the ball HARD on the wood. He'll catch it on its bounce up and release it. Much quicker than loading it the normal way.

Very interesting. Does anyone make use of this technique now?

It seems like there are a lot of oldschool techniques which have fallen out of use but could be very effective if employed correctly.

It seems like there are a lot of oldschool techniques which have fallen out of use but could be very effective if employed correctly.I think many tricky techniques remain but have just morphed over the years. For instance, the mentioned West technique where he'd bounce it hard and catch it on the way up would seem to give defenders a brief opportunity of swiping at a somewhat exposed high dribble. I'd like to learn more, but I'm guessing West's move was actually similar to the manner with which many players gather today and did not go exactly as initially described. playedOut almost made it sound like a little self-lob, which would be risky.

Generally speaking, today, a hard dribble prior to the shot is relatively standard fundamentals, surely thanks to players like Jerry West. That said, I'd be interested in seeing an example of what playedOut mentioned, to see if it looked much different that what I am imagining.
