I remember Kobe got a few jokes when he wore his receding fro. Internet memes weren't as big back then, so any joke trend would be able to gain as much momentum as it can today.

And, I think it's because Kobe's head is shaped better for a receding hairline that he didn't get as much heat. Plus, the way his face looks is more well-suited for it too (no homo).

LeBron would have probably gotten jokes without the headband.

Bron seemed to lose his hairline quick. As recent as 2009-10 he still seemed to have a decent one, don't know what happened the last 2 years. The headband definitely is what makes people harp on about it.
