Bird and Pippen took charges and had bad backs. Are taking charges and bad backs related at all?

But we really shouldn't look at them. We should look at the league's top charge takers and whether they have back problems more often than non charge takers.

omg Nash has a bad back! it's true! taking charges will mess up your back!

never mind that there are 34 other players that are not bothered by it.

btw, i look down on taking charges for the simple fact that if the player falls down and the refs don't call it, the opponent gets an open shot with the defender on the floor. forces your team mates to close out the open man and leave somebody open and just generally fk up your defense.

not to mention it can go the other way and you are called for blocking. seems like a bad strategy if your players really aren't good at taking charges.

I agree. A lot of floppers are the ones who are good at taking charges(ahem, Derek Fisher). Why risk getting hurt plus if you don't get the call you have taken yourself out of the play. Stay on your feet and just contest the damn shot.

That's a rather simplistic and misguided point of view. Taking charges is not necessarily the right play, in fact it can easily be viewed as a risky play. Instead of trying to take a charge and perhaps letting the defender go by you when the official doesn't call a foul, you can stay with your man and contest the shot. Bill Walton, for one, was never enamored with taking charges, he especially disliked big men taking charges when they should be playing defense and challenging shots. Taking charges is hit and miss, people need to understand this.

Lets see how many players have bad backs in this list.

i swear all of them have been injured here and there, i just can't remember if they were back problems tho.

and theres still that margin for error with playing basketball in general leading to back problems, taking charges or not.

Yep I'm with you here. In terms of strategy, I don't find charges to be particularly riskier than contesting shots. If Rodney Stuckey is barreling down the lane, is it in Shane Battier's best interest to spring from the weak side, get in perfect position between Stuckey and the basket, jump, and try to block the shot? Or is he better off getting to a spot, establishing his position, and taking a charge? I feel as though one of those options would put him at a distinct disadvantage while the other would at least give him a fighting chance on a regular basis.

Without charges, there's virtually no reason whatsoever for a guard, wing, or whoever not to attack the rim with absolute reckless abandon. The only chance the defense would have would be to successfully and cleanly block the opponent's shot, which I find to be quite difficult to pull off on a regular basis. Elsewise, it's going to be a whole lot of free throws. Plus, contrary to popular belief, fouling to send a message isn't as effective as everyone likes to believe it is.

Further, it's not as if someone attempting to take a charge has to set their feet three seconds in advance. Again in terms of strategy, it's not entirely risky to attempt a charge. I've seen folks get side-stepped, but it's not a regular occurrence. Further, I'd venture to say those who are whistled for blocking fouls still likely pale in comparison to those who challenge and are whistled for hacking fouls.

Oh wait, here's the number from 2010-2011 season. Apparently Kobe drew 13 charges.

Do you have a link for that list? I'm sort of assuming that list is just an all-encompassing "offensive foul" list, as opposed to strictly being a charges thing.

With that said, I do believe there can be a correlation between charges taken and back injuries. I took a lot of charges in high school and even in a 25 game season, the contusions to my lower back added up very quickly. It's not as if every charge leads to a back injury, it's just that it opens up the possibility for one.

it also shows true sacrifice for your team. teammates have to respect players who take charges because they're putting their bodies on the line more than anything else that occurs in basketball. its why they'll always run over and pick him up off the floor patting him on the back for doing it.

I very much disagree with these statements. There is an extremely stark contrast between flopping and taking a charge. Taking a charge is a legitimate defensive maneuver. If someone is standing somewhere on the basketball court, they have the right to that position. As such, if a defender is set outside the charge circle and an offensive player decides to plow them over, I see no way how this could be interpreted as being a tactic for a player for bush league players who can't defend.

I will have to assume the quoted post was made in jest.

"There's a difference [between taking a charge and flopping]. We all know what flopping is when we see it," Bryant said. "The stuff that you see is where guys aren't really getting hit at all and are just flailing around like a fish out of water. That's kind of like, where are your balls at?"

Out of curiosity, what is it you don't respect about taking charges? Are you operating under the impression that a charge is the same as a flop? I cannot imagine that'd be your stance.

Jordan definitely took charges (probably one of the best of that era at drawing them, though he certainly tried to make defensive plays on the ball more often that taking the charge). So I'm not sure what you mean there.

i swear all of them have been injured here and there, i just can't remember if they were back problems tho.

and theres still that margin for error with playing basketball in general leading to back problems, taking charges or not.
There should be a pattern if it's true.

lol coming from the kobe homer that put me on ignore and was so paranoid of me entering a laker thread, he worried about it days before the game threads :oldlol:

nobody on ISH are as bad posters as you kobe homers. nobody is even close. besides i just found out Millwad = your buddy Lakersreign which puts ya'll definitely at worst posters ever levels, even if theres a dozen of you between your alts.

and why are you getting so butthurt about me starting a thread quoting a kobe article? insecure much? my bad you seem to be insecure 24/7 when it comes to Kobe and the Lakers   i swear a lot of you kobe homers are really insecure lil kids...

He just doesnt want to share his true feelings and risk getting fined.

He knows in his heart what every player knows: taking charges is bush league and for bi*tch a$$ floppers who cant defend.

Taking charges is basically getting rewarded for flopping

I see, so...Scottie Pippen couldn't play defense? Gotcha.

That's all the idiot ever really has. The same boring sh*t over and over and over and over. He's been calling me milwad and nick young for over 6 months now cuz they whooped his a** on the OTC so bad, it STILL hurts. He so traumatized by that he thinks ANYBODY that calls him out for the clown he so clearly is is supposedly milwad. Then he tries to call other people insecure?:lol

The sad part is the only people he can fool with his "act" is other idiots like pauk and lebron23, which is quite embarrassing really. But since he's OBVIOUSLY ret**ded, he lacks the common sense to understand that he has no credibility. Therefore normal people will never believe a word he says:facepalm

say i'm lying....hell just post one time you ever 'raped' me in anything. if ISH had polling between you, lakersreign, heavincent, etc. ya'll would easily be voted worst posters. you insulate yourselves with other kobe fans, like a cult, so you can pretend to validate yourselves in your lil reality bubble.

the only sad thing is how you only talk to other kobe fans where you're insulated to reality, and how much of a joke poster you are. you could be the most hated poster on ISH since you get a lot of mentions on OTC too for being the worst poster on NBA forum, and thats outa all of the kobe fan retards :applause:

Plenty of Kobe hate going around that I don't bother responding to, nor am I interested in being a part off......hate and trolling comes and goes. Who gives a sh1t what people say about Kobe, that's not my problem. Someone calling himself a Laker fan however and spouting sh1t 24/7 as a legit "Laker fan" did attract my attention after derailing Laker threads......then I got into the world of the biggest whore on ISh, unknown to me at that time. Which to my surprise was revealed very but very fast.

You can try again, one more chance.........calling me a kobetard enters in my right ear and quickly goes out the left. Have you really not got anything better? Disappointed....I guess the Bynum thing died pretty fast didn't it.....:lol :lol :lol :lol How old are you seriously, 16 tops?

I ended up here because the biggest whore on ISh appeared again....I though it was the appropriate time for some rape, had some free time. Kobetard sure....worse poster on ISH sure....homer sure...., anything new from the real "Laker fan"? Let's see, Bynum thing died, Laker fan cred died, alternate accounts whore exposed, trolling exposed, teenager exposed. What is left for you to grasp on after all the rape? No shame, no shame....

I guess the real question is, after being soo exposed, how can you still post here? Really puzzling, someone with their head right would at least have some self respect. I guess that's why there is such thing called hoe..
