Bird talked trash to other players and made them look foolish but that's not playing dirty that's just being a cocky shithead and having the skill to back it up. I'd say all of these guys stand out as dirtier players than he was:

Bill Laimbeer
Dennis Rodman
Ron Artest
Bruce Bowen
Karl Malone

I even think John Stockton, Kevin McHale and Patrick Ewing were playing dirtier ball than Larry Bird.

He is cus or how he did his dirt. So sneaky and deceitful. Laimbeer would give you a blatant elbow as you were driving down the lane... In plain sight. Bird would elbow you in the nuts as the ball was in the air , as you were looking up for the rebound..

great youtube comment
.
There will never be another badboy team.Since todays nba you get a foul called for even thinking about contesting a shot. The 80's and early 90's teams were the peak of the nba. And they were so much more fun to watch. Because you knew Laimbeer was going to get into it with somebody. At the time the Pistons were hated around the league. And thats why they were so loved by their fans.Everyone watched because they knew a fight would break out sooner or later.Todays NBA sucks!!

Laimbeer used to put his feet under players when they shoot a jump shot to make them injury their ankles when they land. He would also throw some cheap subtle elbows and then flop the next time the opposing team has the ball and whine to the refs.

And the whole Bad Boys Pistons team would sometimes hit you after the foul was already called. They pulled you down too.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMiVs2SInCY#t=1m28s

We will be hearing more of these kinds of comments until the Detroit Pistons either win the National Basketball Association title or are eliminated from the playoffs, because Bill Laimbeer has not cleaned up his act. He will elbow you, then whine that he didn't touch anybody. He will smack your hand after the whistle has blown, he will stick the ball under your chin. "He can be antagonistic," the Knicks' Trent Tucker said last week. "He makes you want to knock his head off."

If the NBA issued an MDP (Most Despised Player) Award, Laimbeer would be working on winning his third straight trophy. The tough thing to figure out is why Laimbeer plays this way.

...

It's not that Laimbeer is the dirtiest guy in the league; there are probably eight to 10 players around the NBA whom a large percentage of players would call dirty or enforcers. Laimbeer, however, is not an enforcer. Maurice Lucas would smack you, raise his hand to acknowledge the foul, then stare you in the eye. That's an enforcer. Laimbeer hacks you, then whines to the official that he didn't do anything. For years, Laimbeer would start something, then step back and let Rick Mahorn finish it. That, players say, is what they can't stand about Laimbeer.

http://articles.latimes.com/1990-05-26/sports/sp-50_1_bill-laimbeer

And people wanted to fight Laimbeer a lot. I wonder if he got into more fights than any other player in the 80s? I know Bird, Parish, Pippen, Jordan, and Barkley all tried to fight him.

Not to say that other players aren't dirty. But Laimbeer would make you want to fight him apparently. He would flop, flagrant foul you, then whine that it was a soft foul, then elbow you, then whine again if it's called. You rarely see fights today, but I wonder if Laimbeer was in the league still doing the stuff he did with the Piston days, would players start fighting him?

There are other dirty players like Stockton, K.Malone, Rodman. But there are some lesser known players who are dirty.

Exactly who thinks Larry Bird was a dirty player? This is the first I'm hearing of this.

Is this some story that has persisted in minds of LA fans?

Can anyone point me to opposing players or coaches accusing Bird of being dirty?

Yeah.....that's news to me too......Bird was never dirty.....tough yeah, dirty no.
McHale was dirty. Laimbeer has to be the winner here. Maurice Lucas was dirty and that was his job as an enforcer.
Stockton????WTF......he was too little to be dirty.

I wish someone could find the video of Karl Malone knocking out David Robinson cold with his elbow.........that was some real Mike Tyson Sh!t!!!!!!

Can't find it but here's friendly little Johnny Stockton doin work on D-Rob. I also mentioned that duo earlier in the thread - and some other people mentioned them too on this page. When you've got a 6 foot point guard leveling David - The Saint - Robinson, and then complaining to the ref's as if the Admiral was the guy who started it all then you know something's not quite right :oldlol:

The physicality of that era in basketball is so different than today.... I don't think the psyche of new age HS to PRO superstars could handle the kind of abuse dished out back then. It would basically be grown men targeting and abusing the fragile impressionable minds of some 18 and 19 year old teenagers that that were used to being treated like royalty by Nike and McDonald's sponsors in High School. :lol

And I don't see Bird's name. So Bless Mathews are you just trolling or have you heard that Bird was dirty player?

Players whose names I did see on more than one list were Laimbeer, Rodman, Bowen, Malone, Stockton, Reggie Evans and Kobe.

IMO The Miami Heat wouldn't win a 7 game series against the Bad Boys if they time traveled to 1989 - and it's not because of talent, because the Heat are far more talented...

Those Bad Boys are just a different breed. Extinct in the NBA today due to rules of course. If your a Piston in '89 it isn't enough to foul an opponent. Your expected to trip them, hit them and slam them too the hardwood. The only person I see on the Big 3 that wouldn't be Shell-Shocked by the Pistons abuse would be Wade who can actually grow a pair under intense pressure. But he's injury prone lately, Rodman, Mahorn or Laimbeer might send him home on a stretcher before a series would end. Lebron and Bosh would get pale in the face and disappear immediately. Their talents would never show up the rest of the series. Rodman would dismantle Lebron's psyche and Mahorn + Laimbeer could make Bosh cry by half-time. It would be ugly.

There were no pampered fresh outta high school teenagers in the NBA in 1989, even the greenest NBA rookies used to be in their early 20's. And there were few rules that protected the stars. Some of the stars today -acclimated to a ticy-tac foul game- definitely do not show the mental fortitude required to stand up to a terror team like the Bad Boys.

**EDIT**

I take it back about Dwayne Wade... the Pistons would murder him too.

Jungle Jim Luscutoff was dirty. I know Stockton was very crafty on how he throws em bows when refs are not looking. Kevin Johnson used to get bothered by this a lot. Bad Boys with Laimbeer, Rodman and Mahorn with Mahorn setting the tone with no lay up stuff without someone going down.
